QR to Zanzibar/Dar Es Salaam via Salalah, Oman?

Mon Sep 25, 2017 1:01 pm

Hi Team
Just wondering if anyone knew why QR was now routing via Salalah on some flights to Tanzania? I can't find much online. I can see it's a technical stop but just wonder what's changed for the tech stop to be added? As far as I can see they were using an A320 before anyway?
Thanks

Tanzania used to be more or less a colony of Oman. There still are business and leisure connections between the countries. There was a period in the 1800s when Zanzibar was actually the capital of Oman. I believe Oman Air recently started service to Zanzibar.

Range might be an issue, but if they are going to stop somewhere, Oman makes a lot of sense since sometimes historical connections do result in increased traffic.

Is QR using the relatively new Sohar airport as a hub, too?

It was more than just a colony. Zanzibar was their capital for a period, and formed the southern tip of the Indian Ocean trade triangle.

As for range, Istanbul - Tanzania is longer, and Turkish can do it with a 737-900ER.

Its a range issue as the A320 operated fine before but since Saudi airspace closure to Qatari aircraft the detour is enough that some days/loads/weather causes a range issue on the A320. They choose Salalah as their stopover.
