Powerful 7.1 earthquake strikes Mexico City, severely damaging buildings

A powerful earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, seriously damaging buildings and sending people fleeing into the streets on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.

Local television stations broadcast images of collapsed facades and streets filled with rubble.

The extent of damage and injuries was not immediately clear.

The U.S. Geological Survey calculated its preliminary magnitude at 7.1. The epicenter was about 93 miles southeast of Mexico City in the state of Puebla.

BBC: Mexico: Powerful earthquake strikes south says:

The tremor happened as an earthquake drill was being held in Mexico City, on the 32nd anniversary of a quake that killed up to 10,000 people.

Hopefully that will help speed the response.

It appears all US carriers have diverted or air returned their inbound MEX flights except for WN... not sure what they are waiting for.

MEX has been completely evacuated and the airport will remain closed indefinitely until structural engineers can deem the integrity of the terminals. It appears though that only minor damage to the airport occurred.

I wonder about the new airport being built and how its existing portions already in place handled the tremors from the earthquake. Hopefully they don't have to tear any existing portions down and start all over again.

The rest of the city has pockets of major damage throughout with Roma Norte appearing to have taken a major hit. There are total building collapses in that section of the city with scores of people trapped. Ironically the Residents had just taken part in large simulated earthquake drills just hours before to mark the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake. Reports are that some thought it was another drill when the real thing happened, although I think you would know it was the real deal by the fact your ceilings were moving back and forth.

I stand corrected, LH498 and KL685 are still enroute to MEX , still over the southern US.

If they don't divert to a US airport, what divert fields could handle 747's and their

passengers in Mexico proper.? Cancun perhaps?

Is it safe to open an airport when the road ways leading to the airport are all destroyed? The pictures show destroyed streets right in front of the main terminal.

Roads are not damaged everywhere. Police would have closed off any dangerous areas fairly quickly. Many people would still have made their commute home from work today. Nonetheless, the gov't has asked people to stay off the roads, as much as possible, in order to allow emergency vehicles the easiest possible access.

Service was partially restored around 4pm (the earthquake happened around 1pm).

Full operations were supposed to restart around 10pm.

First and for most, thoughts to everyone in Mexico City we pray for you, be strong and be safe. Down here in Australia we don't get earthquakes like other parts of the world do, we might get the slight Earth tremor and that's all, what I would like to know is what does an airport like eg: San Francisco or Los Angeles or any airport located in a Seismic active area do during an event or after an event like that ? How soon after do they or would they open an airport back up, what happens if a plane was taxing to a runway and an Earthquake suddenly happens, like buildings, is there a special way of constructing runways and taxiways to make them Earthquake proof?
Once again to out Mexican friends thoughts to you and stay safe.
