New BA route to be announced tomorrow?

Mon Sep 18, 2017 4:39 pm

A BA twitter pilot has posted on twitter a new 787-9 route will be announced tomorrow and only saying BA have operated their in the past but "not for quite a while"

Any thoughts anyone?

KIX, CGK, DTW or PDX are my guesses.

I don't particularly want to quote the name but if you search hard enough you'll find it. The person in question is a 787 captain.

It would seem that there is a lot of 787-9 capacity from April 2018 with Austin changing to 747 from 787-9, Muscat changing to 787-8 from 787-9 and some Shanghai flights changing to 777-200er.

What about some about to be / recently opened Norwegian route!

Hopefully somewhere in Asia or Africa as their recent new route offerings seem to be heavily (if not totally) weighted to North America

It probably isn't but DTW fits the criteria, hasn't been served for quite a while and the 789 would probably be the best aircraft size to remain in competition with DL's 76W. If BA studied it well, they know that DL won't end MUC for LON and there's already a deficit of international aircraft going into next summer, so they'd technically have a leg up, but I'm confident it's not DTW.

Not sure if this will be announced, but we here at MSY have been hoping for some combination of daily service and upgauge to 789. It would see that there will be enough capacity to do that plus a new city.

Dammam.

BA used to fly to DHA and later DMM for many years, using the 747 and 767. For many years the route was operated out of Gatwick, where passengers could connect nicely to oil cities like Houston. Currently no one flies DMM-LON, whereas both SV and BA fly JED and RUH to LHR (SV now has JED-MAN).

What about MEL, BNE, PER or AKL? I mean there must be some spare demand to Australia now that QF is cancelling MEL-DXB-LHR and changin it with a flight where Y is significantly worse and the flight is very long. BA used to serve both PER and MEL, and I think AKL as well.

The pilot says "and I'm very happy with what I'm hearing!" - so it's probably going to be somewhere "nice" to layover rather than somewhere uninspiring or dangerous (unless, of course, he has family or relations there)

Can't see that one, drove past DMM airport about 2 hours ago, now in my hotel in Bahrain waiting for my BA flight to LHR.

Too close to BAH; at one point BA were running a taxi service for F&J pax to Dammam, bus I think for the Y Pax, maybe they still do? The KSA Government has relaxed their Visa issuance restrictions (& price) to many western nationals.

I want to place my bets on ISB's new airport, but knowing the security situation I'm going to say...hmmm...not MKE, they haven't served that before - maybe DTW? Nah, DL dominates there already, foolish move.

I'd lock my bets on somewhere in the U.S. though.

But if BA did their homework, and tried to figure out how many slots DL has and what kind of aircraft are available than it actually could be DTW, just not tomorrow.

The pilots bio states he is Mancunian (for non-UK readers this means he is from Manchester). Not saying there is anything in this, just an observation.

A third European carrier at ANC probably wouldn't work. Last I heard, however, an Asian carrier is preparing to announce summer seasonal ANC.

BOAC did, might be a 'nice' destination but wouldn't BA need at least 2 frames to operate such a route due to its length?

I think they may have. But I can't see the pilot saying that to be a nice destination, no offence intended.

You're right about Star. I just had a feeling it wasn't going to be SkyTeam. My guess is that CLT will be most likely. Maybe some kind of JV with AA?

BA no longer flies to DTW. I don't see them going back to a terminated destination. Though they used to fly to CLT. I guess we'll see what happens. They have been kind of a surprise lately.

Damman or Detroit then :D

Ok my turn and I'm going for one of the following...

Where they may go:

Osaka: unserved from London, though high airport fees
Bogotá: if not Osaka, this would be my pick, though do they need first here...
Charlotte: my third choice and a logical fit.
Durban: no 4 for me. Still no direct London-Durban flight return. This makes so much sense.
Dammam: good call this, and could be the one.
Islamabad: maybe, given new airport, and thus less problematic security issues, yet unlikely.
Calcutta: definitely time for a return, however maybe not the right market for a with a 789 including first.
Jakarta: after GA's cuts its possible, yet rather adventurous for conservative BA.
Detroit: some good points made earlier in this thread, but I feel other cities are ahead in the pecking order.
Melbourne: a great layover and would help fill the gap left by QF

Where they won't go:
Baghdad: still not the right time; security situation is not within BA's parameters.
Dar es Salaam: the most likely African route to resume first, yet with first class?
Freetown, Monrovia, Lusaka, Entebbe: logical routes, but without first.
Manila: because first class and still too low yield
Taipei: too much competition right now.
Perth: QF already heading there.
Brisbane: they're BA. So no.
Auckland: they haven't got the guts.

Wild card:
Pittsburgh: airlines re-adding service. City on the up. Could be...

Not sure about BA ever serving STL though. And try not to be so US-centric you lot. You've been spoilt the last two years. This one will be elsewhere I feel ;)

I also feel this one won't be heading to the states. I think it could be osaka. You could say do they need first on the Santiago route in regards to Bogota, however Chile I would say is more developed . (If those two routes have been served before, because im not 100% sure they have.)

The pilot in question said he's very pleased with the route, so I'm drawn torwards Asia Pacific.

They served STL as BCAL so not sure if that qualifies.

People's perception of CGK's long-haul potential here on A.net is way to positive. BA would not launch such a long and low yield route to CGK, especially not with First Class!

I would say MNL is more likely than CGK (still, without First Class!), as atleast PR has proven LHR-MNL is worth increasing (5w A340 to daily 77W), while GA has only proven LHR-CGK is struggling...

Another example is that while LH recently left CGK, they are concidering a re-launch of MNL...

right BA has never been at STL but British Caledonian in the late 70s early 80s. They have a substantial AA frequent flyer base, the largest such base without an LHR flight I would think. If AA had just downsized STL instead of killing it probably would have had LHR service long ago.

I can't see it being ISB or BGW for security reasons - the reasons they stopped are the reasons that they won't return either. CMB is unlikely as it's only a fairly recent departure and SEZ is more likely to be an LGW destination instead of LHR. To throw one out there - a destination BA hasn't flown for a while - MAN-JFK?
