What do you think is ahead for NI airports (BFS, BHD, LDY)?
With Norwegian's new TATL flights, is there any chance for connecting flights to a few destinations across Mainland Europe?

Love the idea of this thread.

Interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on airline service to OXF. Would need to be a RJ due to runway length however... Perhaps LH to MUC?

For NI I reckon the biggest missing player is WOW. I reckon due to the lack of American flights they could work with a 3x weekly flight to BFS.

As for OXF they need a proper functioning terminal before anything like LH, KLM etc gives the airport a try. Its nicely situated in the middle of London and Birmingham so the theory is there for a KLM connecting flight to the world (plus the students love a trip to AMS)

CWL should see an interesting movement soon. The Air France GP7200 that went bang over Greenland will be coming to South Wales, to the GE maintenance facility, for a full investigation.

Would they not just transport the engine to Cardiff rather than flying the aircraft over?

It'll come in a freighter, so as it's coming from Canada it might mean something interesting for the local spotters.

Inital reports said the whole aircraft was going there, I almost fell over when I heard that.

Don't get carried away with yourself regarding TUI and Southampton Airport and being local I would have thought you would have been aware of the fact that Menorca by TUI was officially announced a few weeks ago and flights will be undertaken once weekly by Flybe using a Dash 8 so no actual flights by TUI so therefore no 'new' airline announcement for Southampton Airport.

It's the same with the TUI program from Southampton to Ibiza and Palma both of which are operated by Volotea.

Must be one of the few regional airports TUI aren't flying out of with there own metal.

The flights are operated by Flybe. Not sure if a 738 can operate from SOU. I think there is some sort limitation with the runway.

Argh, bugger I didn't see that. In my defence I'm not local anymore! Still, a new destination is better than no new destination, but something new would have been nice.

Really? 1700m seems like it would be enough to get a 738 at least to Menorca, the runway at GIB is shorter and that supports A320 flights to the UK (2 and 1/2 hours).

A quick google has shown an XL 738 at SOU in the past, I'd of though a 737 would have legs for Menorca from there.

Guess i was given the wrong information then!
I'm surprised then that TUI don't base an aircraft at SOU.

When we have previously discussed this (remember Varsity Express / Martin Halstead and Minoan Air's Fokkers??) I recall we concluded that the most realistic options for OXF were:

A - BE Q400 to EDI; and/or
B - KL Embraer to AMS

Difficult to see anything else working viably in the near-ish term.

You use the runway at GIB as an example in a lot of discussions but
GIB may have a shorter runway than SOU but then again it doesn't have an obstacle such as a hill at the end of it's runway as SOU does which has makes some aircraft such as the Boeing 738 from capable of using the airport with MTOW when fully loaded and therefore the aircraft would have to fly with penalties such as a not having a full payload.

Boeing 738 have been used in the past from SOU on the occasional charter and also on a scheduled basis by the likes of Air Berlin to Paderborn which after several months moved to BOH because of the runway limitations at SOU.

Airbus 319/320 are more capable at SOU and the airport has seen numerous 757's over the years but that's a totally different aircraft.

Ironically GIB doesn't have a massive hill at the end of the runway but has one to the side of it.

The 757 may get away with it at SOU better than a 738 as its pretty much the type of airport is was designed for. Short field performance.

I am aware of the Rock of Gibraltar having been there many times myself but the rock is at the southern side of the runway at GIB whereas the runway at SOU has the hill as an obstacle at the end of it's southern runway so quite a different scenario.

Other than the rock itself Gibraltar suffers from wind sheer which affects operations and Southampton has the hill which also affects on operations meaning 738's are not the ideal aircraft to use the airports 5,653 ft/ 1,723 m runway without having to take severe penalties.

Cardiff Airport has 2 new destinations.
Firstly TUI has added a weekly Hurghada flight on Mondays for Winter 2018/19.
Secondly Superbreak is operating a 4 night hotel and flight package to Seville on the 26th March 2018.

TUI has added a new series of cruise flights.

Bi-weekly flights will operate from Manchester, Birmingham and Gatwick to Bangkok and Langkawi, Malaysia between December 2018 and April 2019.

As well as this, there will be several flights between the 3 mentioned UK airports and Muscat, Dubai, Cochin and Aqaba from November 2018.

The last block of destinations are likley to be cruise flights? I'm sure Thomson did CWL-Al Maktoum a year or two back.

New route for CWL. Venice 2 weekly every Tuesday and Saturday.
First Minister Carwyn Jones also calls for Air Passenger Duty to be devolved to Wales and curiously Bristol airport released a press release yesterday about long haul and wanting a level playing field.

Cardiff Airport has received 2 2nd hand jet bridges from Gatwick airport. I'd imagine they would replace the one on stand 7 so it is fully adjustable for Qatar Airways and replace the condemned one on stand 9. The one on stand 10 works fine for Airbus aircraft and 757s.
