Thai Airways takes delivery of first 787-9

Sat Sep 16, 2017 3:42 pm

Thai Airways has taken delivery of its first 787-9, HS-TWA. Though there was about a day's delay to the delivery flight due to the aircraft departing PAE but having to return due to an engine issue, the aircraft is on its way to BKK. It is expected to touch down in BKK at 200am local time (about 3 and half hours from now).

Planned routes include Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Singapore and Auckland

Thai Airways will be showing the landing into BKK live on their facebook page for those interested.

Below are some pictures from their facebook page. As someone who sees their 788's on a regular basis I have to say their livery suits the 789

Thai Airways livery is my favorite but I don't think it looks too good on the B787.

Yes the engine issues were made quite clear in the opening post. It is currently about 2 hours out from BKK

Considering Thai is quite late getting its first 787 compared to other operators, how many airlines that have ordered it are yet to take delivery of one?

Thai currently has 6 787-8s; this is their first 787-9.

Stunning aircraft, but a bit of a strange decision to only order 2, I feel they could easily make do with more. They've already made the decision to have a batsh*t crazy fleet, so why not roll with it?

Thanks for sharing the pics, beautiful aircraft! Personally love TG's present colors. With family in chiang mai, I was lucky to fly on two of their A300s out of CNX and HKT before they got rid of them. Hoping to visit them again next year, would be wonderful to catch a ride on one of their 787s

I will be flying this beast in business in a few months BKK-AKL. Hope they sort out the engine issues. Agree - it would be good to see a more coherent fleet plan from Thai.

I may be incorrect, but wouldn`t these "engine issues" most likely stem from installation rather than anything
fundamental? I`m thinking perhaps a nut under torqued, a kinked pipe, or electrical connection not seated,
something along those lines, since it was sorted in no time really. I think your trip will be guaranteed.....have

Beautiful aircraft in a gorgeous livery. I've read people slate the Thai livery on here but it's hard to see why. It's the perfect modernisation of a classic livery and is unique in motif and colour boldness for a legacy carrier.

It's minor issue. Just a bit of oil leak (I'm not sure if it is "fuel" leak? but that is what I heard). They fix it in no time, but the crew need a full rest to operate such long ferry flight. So they depart again around 24 hours later.

I shall be flying her inaugural flight on BKK-CNX on business class next Saturday. As of now, the flight is confirmed as 789 operation.

Note that a new type of business class seat is installed in 789, a reverse herringbone one. We always have angle lie flat and stagger seat, this is the first time for us to experience a reverse herringbone. Shall write a trip report after the journey.

Nice, looking forward to the trip report. As for J Class, I lost track of how many TG has, anyone has a list of it? Are they planning to standardise the J class, at least on widebody. I understand TG no longer has any J class narrowbody except for the two B734 they operate now.

Yes, but those newer generation aircraft will be replacing current older ones progressively.

A340 are no longer in active fleet, and are repeatedly being sold but no buyer. One A340-541 is now under Royal Thai Air Force under registration 60204, previously HS-TLC. Others remain stored at DMK and UTP.

A350 replaces B777-200A, B777-300A and some B747-400.
B787-8 replaces the A300B4.
B787-9 replaces the B777-200A, some B747-400 and some A330-300.

In future, the fleet will be moving from six to four families:
A350
A380
B787
B77W

plus narrowbody A320.

A330 and B777-200A/300A will be replaced progressively over the next decade. TG has retired some B777-200A, scrapping in progress in the UK. A330 may stay a bit longer till they run them to ground with domestic flight as they are pretty recent built.

What about the future of business class config? Does anybody have a seat map? Still not on Thai's website. I hear reverse herringbone so now we have yet another business class config. Would be good to see some standardisation.

What happened to the A346s?

...yeah.. plus different variants/engines of both the A330 and 777...and it seems like yesterday they also had the MD-11, the A300-600... Heck, even the DC-10ER and A300B4 are just around the corner and saw service alongside A330 and 777s!

Afaik they have four J seats. The most common one is Stelia's Solstys (the staggered one on their 777, A380, A350, etc.). Their 787-8's have B/E Aerospace Diamond seats (6-abreast with no direct aisle access, same ones Aeromexico has on them). Their 787-9's will have either Zodiac Cirrus (like KLM's and Air France's 787's) or B/E Aerospace Super Diamond (like Xiamen's, Aeromexico's, Air Canada's etc. 787-9's), and they have their old angled product on their 747's and some other wb's that iirc they're replacing.

A320s are no longer listed in TG fleet. They were transferred back to Thai Smile, but it might confuse you guys, since the livery are so hybrid. Only narrow body in TG fleet is 737-400 (the last remaining? - I'm not sure if they keep one or two) that is retained to operated flight between Bangkok and Koh Samui, where larger aircraft cannot operate there.

By the way, am I allowed to post a link from facebook? Our fellow spotter has managed to photograph both J and Y class seat. Let me try

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... ater&ifg=1
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... ater&ifg=1

I think they are trying to standardize J class into 3 seat type. The Angle lie flat in A330 and 747 surely will remain for regional destination. Stagger seat in 77W and 350 should be the main type of their long haul J seat. I read from a Thai journal a while back that they are planning to re-configuration 788 (no detail of what work is to be done, some anticipate installation of crew rest), which I think is a weird idea at the time, considering the aircraft to be relatively new. But when I see new Business class seat in 789, i think i understand why... The odd ball B/E aerospace diamond seat might be best going away.

We have 3 "generations" of purple

The first one comes in the re-branding era. It is metallic look, using "Mica". It was proven too difficult to maintain. So they introduce the second generation, which is a faded, dull purple as an interim livery while the Engineering Department try to find the solution. We are right now on 3rd generation which look exactly the same as that Mica ones beginning from the delivery of new A330 batch (with RR engine). I have no idea how they solved the problem. But you can rest assure, the beautiful metallic purple will finally replace those dull - boring look eventually,

Actually the already announced plan is for daily BKK-AKL initially. This will require 2 aircraft. Where they go in the down time I'm not sure but likely to be regional for obvious reasons.

"Arkia's" 789 are leased to Norwegian via its sister company MG Aviation

Thanks for the info.
Will Arkia fly the A339 they have ordered or will they lease them?

I think the plan is to use them on NYC and BKK

thanks Amirs. I would have prefered the 787 ;)
