China Airlines (CI) 747-400F replacement ?

Wed Sep 13, 2017 11:47 pm

Hi !

China Airlines (CI) has about 18 747-400F in service but no order to replace them. Why haven't they placed and order yet ? Are they waiting for a better deal on 748F or 77F will be better for them ?

Any ideas ?

The aircraft aren't particularly old; they were delivered between July 2000 and April 2007.

CI 744F fleet can easily soldier on till past 2025. Not sure there is an immediate impetus to replace.

Most other carriers that operate the 744F have plans to replace them. I guess CI can wait until Boeing decides to close the 747 line and then order some more to keep it going......

As others mentioned CI has advantage of having a younger 744 freighter fleet.
CI started out using Atlas for many years and got its own birds several years later hence they don't have the replacement pressure of earlier operators.

At some point I'm sure Boeing will make CI a sweet offer on a dozen 748F that CI cannot refuse :)

Plus, the freight market is a buyers market right now and there is an immense amount of spares available for these birds. No need to replace anytime soon.
