ATC strike in French Guyana and SOOO oceanic airspace over Atlantic

Wed Sep 13, 2017 4:33 pm

Sorry,no translation for the moment; only in french!

http://www.franceguyane.fr/actualite/ec ... 365419.php

To sum up :

The ATCOs of Cayenne Airport/Approach/ACC are on strike due to staff shortage.
The ATC staff is scheduled to work with 25 people to provide ATS for SOCA airport and approach, flight information and alert services for every flights over French Guyana territory ,and control flights "en route" in SOOO FIR that include a huge airspace over Atlantic Ocean and concerning some flights from Europe to South America.

At the end of October the services will be ensured by only 12 fully qualified controllers when 25 are needed.
Most of nights, during a few hours, there is a single controller to assume oceanic air traffic and local flights. The traffic in SOOO FIR can be problematic sometimes, encountering the hard weather conditions linked to the proximity of tropic convergence area, and the controller also has to pay attention to the local traffic on a different control position and frequencies.

The guyanese ATCOs are even not talking about the material difficulties they have: working with and old French Air Force radar (which is down most of times), the lack of radio range (Some public transportation aircrafts are not able to close their FPL on frequency on their destination airport, and alert services can hardly be granted).

The Head of french national ANSP (DSNA) is aware about the situation since 2009.....yes....2009.

The main concern of this strike is the crews and passengers safety.
