Alaska new livery update

Tue Sep 12, 2017 3:42 pm

I believe it has been about 15 months or so since Alaska started painting their fleet in the new livery.

Personally I like the update, but I was wonder what most other people think.
Also, from what I can eyeball, it seems about 50%+ or so of the fleet is painted now. Is that correct?
Where is most of the painting being done?

Any idea of when the first A320 from Virgin will have AS livery (that will be interesting to see!!)

I would say as many as 60-70% of the 738's are painted and 50-60% of the 739's. I think all of the E175's are in the new livery (including the SkyWest ones) and obviously none of the Dash 8's are painted.

Why aren't any of the Q400s painted? In fact this would be a perfect time for them to start painting them as they have many parked.

Having visited the US in March, I have to say I think Alaska's new livery looks very sharp.

I like the new scheme. More contemporary. With the old scheme, the titles looked messy.

AS had a number of special liveries along with the Q400s. Wondering if they return.

Last I heard they're moving away from so many special liveries....just too many and weren't recognizable as an AS aircraft. I imagine you'll see them keep the Salmon-Thirty-Salmon and a Disney aircraft or two and that'll be it.

At the rate they're going, I would be surprised if QX has the spare pilots to fly them to the paint shop. They can't even fly their scheduled flying, let alone unscheduled. OO recently brought back the AS CRJ-700s from retirement to cover, and added CRJ-200s (which we haven't ever had in recent memory) to cover QX flights.

That's correct. If you take a look at the current special liveries, they are all very obviously AS aircraft. Our new marketing VP didn't like the diluted brand caused by so many special liveries. They aren't opposed to them, but they have to be obviously AS.

Horizon DH4s will start to be repainted in November. That is when they were able to arrange appointments with the vendor that they use to paint the planes. College liveries will also disappear. As mentioned earlier, all of QX's E75s are delivered in the new colors, and the 7 OO E75s that were delivered in the older colors have since been repainted. The AS CRJs will probably not be repainted from the old colors or the OO house colors. None of the 734s will see the new colors, and I would say at least 50% of the 73Gs have been repainted.

I thought AS had started with the Q400's. Now I am second guessing myself. Hmmm.

That one should stay as it is "easily recognizable as Alaska". The Timbers jet retirement was pushed back until early next year.

Is it being sold or being made into a freighter? I've been seeing it at ANC a lot lately.

I've been keeping track of this so here's the current progress:
-700/-700F: 9 of 14 (64%) – 627 is in paint
-800: 37 of 61 (61%) – 568 & 569 are in paint
-900: 3 of 12 (25%)
-900ER: 27 of 61 (44%)

568 (employee powered) and 569 (starliner 75) both went to VCV for paint in the last several days so I'm crossing my fingers they won't come out in standard colors.

I really like the new livery! I was worried before it got revealed because I've found many recent livery updates to be disappointing, but AS nailed it. It looks particularly sharp on the E175, can't wait to see it on the Q400.

I can see the Starliner scheme staying, but I think it's the end of the road for the Employee Powered scheme. I'm willing to bet that the Spriti of Seattle (Dreamliner scheme) will also be gone.

I'm going to miss the college colors of QX if they are going away! I've still never been lucky enough to be on the WSU plane, however, I did end up on the purple and gold one once. I always said that if I had to fly on that one I'd rather drive to Seattle, but I sucked it up, put on my Coug shirt and boarded the plane in Wenatchee.

I never liked their previous livery, so it wouldn't be hard to beat it. But actually I quite like the new one, it has merit on its own. However I doubt it'd look as nice on a widebody.

I love the AS livery, it doesn't lose any of the Alaskan identity from the previous livery, but it's more colourful, more slick, more modern. Whether intentional or not, the colours remind me of the Aurora Borealis in a night sky, and overall I really, really like it.

I think AS hit a home run with this livery. The added colors are a welcome change and the man on the tail is more obviously an Eskimo (indigenous Alaskan? I have a hard time keeping up with PC terms). I'm also impressed by their newest branding elements which definitely convey "cool, trendy, West Coast airline" which should bode well for Virgin America fans.

Since someone bought up the Q-400s I hope that when the go in for the exterior paint they would also do a little work on the interiors. The burgundy seats and carpet from the original QX era don't really jive with the new hip west coast vibe that AS is going for. They make the planes seem older and smaller than they actually are. Additionally the yellowing of the sidewall panels does not help. I realize that 15 of them are being returned to lessors but the ones that remain could use some TLC to bring them up AS cosmetic standards.

More than Aurora, they remind me of the Pacific Northwest - the sky blue and shades of green is so quintessential Washington-Oregon feel!

Alaska smashed it outta the park with their livery refresh, and I am so looking forward to see what the A320s look like in those colors! I hope when the first VX 320 is repainted, they also remove that godawful purple-pink "mood" lighting inside which makes the plane look like a cheap strip club in Vegas.

Do they actually have to remove it or just reprogram it. The mood lighting on the 737 sky interior can do any color I think.

Correct. The LED lights in the cabin can display a full range of colors. Flight attendants, however, can only access the pre pre-programmed color schemes set by the company.

The 73Gs are here for the foreseeable future! A few are being converted to freighters, but most are staying in the pax fleet and are being upgraded with new seats/power starting in 2018

That is assuming VX's cabins have "real" programmable mood lighting. They may just have a purple film/cover (blue for aisle ceiling lights) over the light housings/bulbs to provide cheap and "dumb" (for lack of better term) mood lighting.

Last I heard they're moving away from so many special liveries....just too many and weren't recognizable as an AS aircraft. I imagine you'll see them keep the Salmon-Thirty-Salmon and a Disney aircraft or two and that'll be it.

And then they announced the San Francisco Giants livery today (9/13).

I've experienced only two different schemes on AS - the standard blue and then an orange-red. Seems like it isn't a priority to change the lights very much to the flight.

So what do/did you think of the "updated" old scheme whereby the titles are similar to those on the new scheme...e.g. the K doesn't kick through the A? Some of those are still flying around on both winglet and non-winglet 737-900s.

It transitions from the blue to the orange tho.

That is assuming VX's cabins have "real" programmable mood lighting. They may just have a purple film/cover (blue for aisle ceiling lights) over the light housings/bulbs to provide cheap and "dumb" (for lack of better term) mood lighting.

Just got off a Virgin America A320 flight and yes, it has "dumb" "mood" lighting, as in just colored covers over regular lights so the ceiling lights ONLY stay purple and lights on the sides over panels only stay dark pink/violet. Hence I call it the "cheap Vegas strip club" look.

Is that done automatically, or does someone need to manually make color changes?

So the VX planes don't actually have mood lighting? The LED lights in boeing sky create any color they want.

With the new scheme, the titles are much easier to see. I'm not sure how to explain, but with the old titles, you can see "fringes" on the letters which make it kind of painful to look at.

Nope. They just have static purple-and-pink lighting. Boarding, mid-flight, landing, 6 in the morning, late at night, its always the same "mood" :D

I've never liked the 90's Alaska Airlines livery. Always looked to me like some executive's kid was playing with a "Kudo's Bar" like it was an airplane, and the executive thought, "What the hey, may as well."

The new design is a vast improvement. I miss the Alaska flag from the '80s design, but 10 foot tall letters will have to do. :)

I like the refresh. More color is rarely a bad thing and this one is spot on.
