Probably spare parts for the other aircraft in service

I do not want to sound pessimistic, but it seems Trump may enforce further sanctions on Iran in the few coming days. If this happens, then could we kiss the Boeing deal goodbye?

Possibly, but since the deal for the aircraft was announced, other sanctions have been enforced that do not affect aircraft sales. If Trump was to enforce more sanctions against Iran, I do not believe the aviation industry will be effected for now

Why are there so many different airlines in Iran?

First you have the state-owned Iran Air. In additon there are the 2 big privately-owned Iran Aseman Airlines and Mahan Air. But the there are many smaller operators such as Zagros Airlines and Kish Air. Most if not all carriers seem to focus, understandably, on Teheran. Is there such a high demand that every airline makes money?

1) Iran is 80 million people with a healthy middle class (aka the flying public).
2) Iran Air, Iran Aseman, and Mahan have time and again said they'd be bigger if sourcing aircraft weren't so difficult. That would indicate they know their market has greater demand than they can serve, meaning there's un-tapped demand for someone else to serve. Un-tapped demand is a viable market for anyone else who can source an airframe.

I'd imagine the number of airlines decreases as Iran Air takes delivery of their Airbuses and starts to serve those underserved markets.

Iran is a huge market that (in terms of aviation) is still massively undeserved, particularly outside of Tehran. Keep in mind that pre-revolution Iran Air had massive plans to essentially become the 'Dubai' of the Middle East while Dubai itself was at the time not much more than train station in the desert.

As embargoes have been lifted there's also a huge opportunity window to sell into Iran. That will stimulate business traffic immediately. Iran also has exports of various types it needs to sell around the world.

These new aircraft are looking amazing for Iranian airlines. Mahan Air has a nice livery on the A346. Otherwise, the ATR's and A330's look amazing in Iran Air's livery.

Evening

There is a Mahan Air flight from Tehran due to arrived at Gatwick at 21.10pm tonight (W5 091). Does anyone know if this is a new scheduled service, or a one-off flight perhaps?

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

I'm sorry I've never been to Iran.

What's it like to fly an Iranian airline? Is it very similar to a western airline? Are men and women seated together? How's security at the airport? How's the level of service? Any strange quirks?

I've flown Iran Air, Pouya Air, Mahan, Iran Aseman, Caspian, Kish Air, ATA Airlines and Qeshm, and the service has always been similar/excellent. There is no segregation, all flights will include a meal (usually cold unless on a longer flight), soft drinks, Mahan and Iran Air can have some form of In Flight Entertainment, and in my experience everyone wants to talk to you when they realise you are a visiters to their country. I even had someone who looked quite important (dressed like an Imam) sitting beside me who kept offering me some of his own hard boiled sweets/candies, aswell as ordering water for me from the crew. The attitude seems to be that they want to make visiters feel welcome to their country.

Security is fine too, even the dreaded revolutionary guards seem to either say nothing, or smile and say hello at airport security (one even winked at me!). They like looking at foreign passports but it isn't an issue. Photography in the departure lounge and onboard is fine if done discreetly, and on some flights, just mentioning that you are an enthusiast usually results in a trip to the jumpseat whilst in the air.

EP-ITD was moved to Bandar Abbas today. This has become an ATR base, for the airline. New routes to Shiraz, Chabahar, Zahedan, Ahwaz, Kerman, Isfahan, Abu Musa, Iranshahr, Asaluyeh, and Kish, planned as IR receives more ATR aircraft. Next ATR delivery is in December or January. Also, EP-ITF was supposed to also go to Bandar Abbas, but had minor issues in receiving CofA for the aircraft.

They will take delivery of 5 more ATR aircraft by the end of the year plus 4 A320 family aircraft.Thats about it I saw it in a article.

I think the delivery schedule is a little slower than that. Two more ATR 72-600 will be delivered late September (early Mehr Iranian calendar). They are to be EP-ITE and EP-ITF (currently F-WWET and F-WWEC). There are 7 to delivered in 2018 and 7 in 2019 for a total of 20.

A single A320 CEO (MSN 7978) is due to handed be over in late December 2017. A single ship will be delivered in January 2018, with two in February.

About 6 weeks ago, I flew on one the last two active F-100 aircraft in the IR fleet (EP-IDF, the other being EP-IDG). They are to exit the fleet by end of 2017, as the two ATRs and the one A320 will have arrived. The bulk of the ATR 72 cockpit crew is coming from the F-100 fleet. There is also a major ab initio pilot recruitment.

There are 3 (probably actually 2), leased Ukrainian-registered MD-80s left that are also going to leave the fleet late this year or early 2018.

By end of the current Iranian year (March 2018), I expect the IR fleet to consist of the following:

Airbus A300 family (4 A300-605R, one or possibly two A310-304 and two to four A300B2/B4): 7-10
Hi, this link suggests that MSN 7978 is actually going to AirAsia. We will know for sure when the aircraft is painted. https://a320archive.com/msn/7978
Airbus A320 CEO (2 older IAE, 4 older CFM, and 4 new CFM): 10
Airbus A321 CEO (a single CFM from early 2017): 1
Airbus A330 CEO (two A330-243, delivered new in March 2017): 2
ATR 72-600 (six all newly delivered in 2017): 6
Boeing 747-200C (in full freighter configuration, the only 747 remaining): 1
Total of 27 to 30 of which 13 are new
Overall, the average age of the fleet will markedly drop, will elimination of the old F-100 and MD-80 and addition of the new ATR and Airbus planes. Considering that ATR is de facto Airbus, IR will be nearly all Airbus shortly.

Turkish Airlines and Kish Free Trade Zone Administration signed an agreement to promote the Island of Kish.
Eventually TK might start direct flights to the Island.
Traffic between both countries growing strong, Shiraz flights have already been upgauged to A330 daily by TK.

I have an airline on Airlinesim (Airline management simulator online) based in Iran so I have a little bit of interest in this thread for that reason. Realistically how undeserved is Iran?

Population is 80million - about the same as Germany but whereas Germany's main 3 airports (Frankfurt, Munich and Dussledorf) handle 60, 42 and 23million pax per year Irans top 3 airports (Tehran Mehrabad, IKA and Mashad) handle about 16, 10 and 7million pax. Not saying theyll ever get to Germany's levels but surely with similar populations they could triple those figures?

The reason why the figures are so low is because of a lack of aircraft. Once we see more aircraft arrive, im sure the figures will be much higher.

Airline is still being sanctioned by the US government because of their support for the Syrian government in the civil war. Well known that Mahan flies militias into Damascus, from Iran.

Today IR began operating its 3rd weekly flight to Stockholm, from Tehran, operated by the A330. This route is flown by A330s because of issues obtaining fuel, in Stockholm, leading to the A330 doing IKA-ARN-IKA without getting fuel in Sweden. This is the beginning of IR's expansion in Europe. Vienna and Cologne will soon receive more flights.

Probably the oldest active Airbus, period!

I am glad to see that Tillerson said that Airbus could continue to supply IR with aircraft; I think he probably understands far more how badly the US move has gone down in Europe. It's a bitter blow to Boeing, of course, because if IR has to replace its Boeing orders with Airbuses, that's going to be a huge windfall for Airbus. Presumably we can expect to see B77W orders replaced by A350-1000s and 737-Maxes by A320Neos (and presumably Asseman will replace its 737 order with A320s, too, in due course).

Could this be a small step towards getting a few A380s, due to availability of other frames if Boeing is out of the deal?

I agree with you. We will understand what will happen in a couple of months, with the Boeing deal, because the first 77W is scheduled to be delivered in April 2018. If we see a 77W in IR colours, that will tell us if the deal will go on. Probably looking at February/March to spot an IR Boeing aircraft, (if the deal happens).

Very much doubt this since the main reason why IR didnt take the A380 was because of a lack of infrastructure in Iran. Most likely will see IR increase its orders for other Airbus aircraft, such as the A330 or A350.

EP-IBK (A310-300), Iran Air, is undergoing repairs at IKA, in the hope of being back in service. This is the aircraft that was seriously damaged at IKA when it collided with EP-MMR (A340-600), Mahan Air, after the aircraft backed into each other, causing damage to the horizontal stabiliser. Incident occurred over 13 months ago.

GOT will also be increased (by 100%) in December when IR will move up from one to two weekly flights. Also operated with the 330, for the same reasons as ARN.

And you're forgetting the cloesest neighbour to ARN, which is GOT!
GOT will also be increased (by 100%) in December when IR will move up from one to two weekly flights. Also operated with the 330, for the same reasons as ARN.

Absolutely, Same with Cologne, except for one of the weekly flights being operated by A300 and another by A320.

Just like wherever I went in Iran...I was treated very well when traveling by air. People were very curious about me and very friendly...and that was with, literally, everyone I met thinking I was an American.

Don't believe the garbage you hear from fox news and the bought and paid for politicians regarding Iran. Not a word of it is true.

I am very confused: what is the serial number for the next A320 ceo for Iran Air? Some sources show it to be 8009 (including TLS spotters), other show it to be 8037. But another site shows that the latter going to Saudia. Does anyone have more information?

According to TLS spotters the aircraft has a white tail. Airbus would not have painted the tail white if it was going to Saudia. Saudia have navy blue tails.
