This airline has crazy fares to fly to Tahiti (from Paris or LAX).

I've always wanted to visit Tahiti, yet knowing about the impending end of TN's legendary A340s flying the route, I really want to go sooner. Agree about the prices though, they're ludicrous. It seemed hard to get change out of GBP1500 return when I last checked. I think that may have been from LA too, rather than Paris!

Agreed. Was looking at fares last night and wondering who actually pays those ridiculous fares.

I remember boarding their final A340-300 aa a pre-delivery static display item at the 2005 Paris Air Salon. Funny to think of them being retired now, I it was also one of Airbus's last A343 orders to be fulfilled...?

I flew Air Tahiti Nui back in 2010 from Los Angeles to Papeete. Was a very good experience even in economy.Very good service. Dissepointed that they didn't buy the Airbus 350.

Yes but a couple of years people were saying this was just a bit of politics and that an A350 order was more likely once the French government woke up. So is this now confirmation of a 787 order ?

I've flown with them a few times and also found their service good, but I suppose it helps being in vacation mode when flying with them..

No they were on Boeing's books at the end of April 2015

It was one of the last A340-300 orders. At the time I wondered why they ordered the A340 and my only explanation was that as a new airline, it helped them avoid ETOPS.

Yes but I guess what I'm asking is if the Boeing 787 order is now going ahead in the absence of any French government intervention aimed at sweetening a deal towards the Airbus product. Or is there still time to for that scenario to unfold ?

No. If I remember right two are purchased and two are leased.

Flown TN twice, once in the old business and once in the back. No issues, good service for a leisure airline. Next trip is April 2019, hoping the 340 is still available, not a big fan of the 787's passenger comfort.

The order is firm and has been for 2 years. Too late to switch unless the French government is also willing to pay the cancellation fees and TN is willing to wait several more years for new planes.

Again, firm for over two years now. I think you can put aside hope for French government intervention. The time for that was when TN selected the 787 but before they actually signed a firm contract for the plane.

I'm not "hoping" for anything, just exploring the previously discussed proposition that the 787 order was designed to rattle some political cages back in France in hope of securing tax relief on Airbus product. I assumed the fact this old story has been reported again recently may be evidence to suggest it's now a confirmed done deal at Boeing and that any attempt to sway the French Polynesian administration has been abandoned. I think we've all seen airliner orders, deferred and cancelled enough to know that they aren't necessarily done deals until the aircraft are fully painted... hey not even then !

It must be a slow news day for lazy journalist.

There are no changes with the order and lease.

Probably only reason this is in the news is because TN announced its earnings two weeks ago and obviously central piece of its 2018 business plan highlights was mention of the anticipated arrival of future 787 fleet.

Whatever the case, those TN A343s will be sorely missed. Such beautiful birds! IMO, the TN livery does not fit quite as well on the 789s to be onboarded.

According to TripAdvisor, it's cheaper to fly LAX-HNL-PPT on HA than it is to fly LAX-PPT on TN. I would think DL or UA might be interested in looking into adding LAX-PPT. You'd see prices drop right away if that were the case.

I flew LAX-PPT on their tired old 340’s. Cabin Service and F/A’s good but their food was gross. IFE also substandard.

Looking forward to trying them again with their 787’s.

UA has already announced SFO-PPT. They won't venture into the LAX-PPT market, as least not soon.

I think it's pertinent to ask - after a glance at their fleet - that how they are planning to replace 5 A340-300 with only 4 B787-9.

Prices to PPT from LAX ok TN are nuts! I flew UTA and AOM the last two times I went to Tahiti and back then much more reasonable. Even AF has somewhat fair pricing from LAX with 772 and premium economy as well. I’ve opted to fly to Fiji instead my past few South-Pac vacays on FJ for far less on both flights and accommodations over going to Tahiti again.

Another poster mentioned HA being reasonable prices with a stop in HNL which I’ve researched before and found true, the scheduling and frequency just weren’t feasible. Would be nice to see AA or DL enter the market and see where prices go.

SFO should have some reasonable pricing now with UA entering the market and the addition of French Blue.

They have been wet leasing out one of their aircraft whenever they get the chance.

Are they still doing this for CU? I saw a TN 340 at HAV last year at a remote stand adjacent the CU hangars.

It's always a treat to catch one (or two!) at LAX. The 787 won't be the same. She'll wear the TN livery well enough, but we get so many 787s here and not enough A340s that it'll be sad to see the A340 go!
