The Dubai Air Show Nov 2017. What Major Announcements Do You Expect?

Sun Sep 03, 2017 6:21 am

The Dubai Air Show is scheduled a mere two months from now and I am curious what if any major announcements folks expect might be made.

I can guess EK might announce their long anticipated "regional jet" choice. Maybe EADS announces the 322? Boeing unveils their MOM plane? Further tweaks to the 320neo family or 737 Max family?

Maybe additional refinement or changes to the A350 family or 777x. Any big orders that might come down the pike?

What do you think might happen?

I think EK will order a few of those 380 Plus for the times when they start to phase out their oldest ones.

I'm hopeful Emirates will announce it's decision from the A350/787 RFP, although recent developments have been quiet on that front.

I am hopeful that we will get to know the unidentified customer for that 125 B737Max LoI, or maybe it would be converted to a firm order. By 9W.

If the A380 Plus will be launched there, I would expect IAG to be a major launch customer. A launch for EK only is unlikly to happen.
Most A380 Plus orders will be conversions of existing A380 orders already in the books.

Airbus will show a presentation how they could bump up the range of the A350.
If not, Quantas will announce an order of the 777-8x.

Emirates will place an order for the A350-900 or for an improved 787-10.

Etihad will be silent, Qatar will be loud - but both are not in a situation were they should place big widebody orders.

EK will order the 787.
QR unfortunately will not be present in the air show due to the political conflict in the region.
EY they are in loss, nothing expected.

Perhaps QR will make a big announcement of their own during that show time just to get one over on their neighbours.

The A380s EK has already on order will replace the oldest ones. No need to order additional A380's. By the way, TC was pretty negative about the -plus. The only thing he liked about the -plus were it's winglets. He complained that Airbus doesn't offer them as a retrofit.

I don't expect anything special about the Dubai show others than EK's 787-order or what ever it will be.

Why? They've stated that their interest is more in used A380s on the cheap, than ordering any more new ones.

Because of this statement! They know that the A380 is perfect for them and they officially told this to the press. The remark about used aircrafts was just made, to get a better price from Airbus.
Airbus must sell the A380 to a big player like IAG, because EK said it will only order additional A380s, if Airbus can show other customers for this aircraft. And I think they would not accept a minor order - like 3 additional A380s for ANA.

Yapp, IF they are interested in the -plus (see the rest of my reply above...) it would be a conversion of existing orders (.... which doesn't help Airbus, from the A320-programme we know they hate the c-word (although they usually have no choice to accept conversions)).

I cannot find a link that quickly but Joerg is correct. BA's Walsh once said they are happy with the A380 and they could use more of them.

Again, Joerg is correct. I remember that statement by TC. And no, right now I will not search for that link. Have to walk the dog now. He is in the priority lane, sorry.

IAG CEO Willie Walsh said at the Growth Frontiers 2016 conference in Dublin not only the sentence, that they prefer used A380s because of the high price of new ones, but also the following sentence: "So the A380 works extremely well for us and we are prepared to increase our fleet beyond the 12 we are planning to get."

Aviation Week reported the following on the 21th of June: While Emirates is interested in principle in ordering more A380s over time, Clark indicated that the changes alone proposed as part of the A380-plus concept will not do the trick. “They need to put the A380s into other airlines,” he said.

I would guess the following:
An order from Emirates, Saudia and Egypt Air. Maybe Kuwait (B77W top-up. They have received the 10 frames they ordered). Etihad = No.
Am not sure if Qatar Airways can participate in the event.

Don't think so, at this moment, Airbus must be complicating stopping the A380 program altogether. You can play games for getting a better deal, but in the end, the other party - Airbus in this case - has another option. I bet Airbus has offered the A380 for rock bottom price to IAG, but they are not willing to sell at a loss.

Probably EK's A350 or 787 order. Highly unlikely: A380plus order from EK plus another one. Nothing special beyond that. Dubai airshow isn't that important in the industry.

I won't be surprised if I see some A380plus orders, but I am more looking forward if it will be 787 or A350, It would be cool to see a 787-10 or even a A350-1000 in the EK Colors.

I doubt anyone will be ordering big.

There is regional tension, a softening travel picture and profitability under a squeeze all round. It isn't a great picture to offer to financiers and bond holders. When the world starts looking a little febrile, money takes flight into things like gold and commodities, so borrowing costs go up and that's not good for EK. Contrary to a.net wisdom, Emirates does all their own financing.

If anything the EK small widebody order will be pushed back even further or (gasp!) scaled back to a subfleet of 10 or so. I think the delay is most likely.

Given that the ME3 have played a huge role in the aviation sector over the past decade, it's strange to say that the Dubai airshow is not important.

Many orders have been won (and likely lost) at this show, given the relationship building opportunity it delivers to manufacturers.

Even though balance appears to be coming back into the market as the huge growth levels of the ME3 stabilise, it's still a very important event.

It's going to be interesting to see what Etihad does. I'm expecting significant deferrals. They simply don't need the 77X or the 350. The 787 is perfect for them
To replace the 330s with.

With the current 130 fleet airline being too big already, their 180 aircraft on order will be slimmed dramatically.

Qatar won't be there.

Gulf air - will they change their minds again on the 787?

I really have no idea. EK is reportedly experiencing hard times. What I don't understand is that EK has a lot of regional high capacity routes that they are using planes on which are designed to fly far longer missions (i.e. a lot of metal for the mission). Maybe they have to do this to utilise their long haul fleet wisely. But maybe we will see an order for B787-10 or A339. EK may be looking for ways to find more efficiency. And then there is the much discussed 77x A35K situation. I am not holding my breath on any A350 plus order. But will be interesting to see.

It would be nice to see some A330 Regional orders, according to the current cold environment of the market. Easy, cheap, quick delivery and profitable...

There's the SaudiGulf Airlines 77W commitment that was announced during Trump visit to the region, this one could be firmed at the show.

Oman Air was rumored to order some more wide bodies.

There might also be some large Indian orders.

Hey guys,
Emirates small widebody order is in my opinion, likely to be announced at DAS. I too don't believe that Etihad will order anything, but I suspect a large Qatar order announced in Doha may be a successful diversion from 'the main show in town' at the time - and a purely political move.
Qantas won't announce the result of Project Sunrise at DAS .... 2018 at the earliest I suspect.
I'm sure that there will be a smattering of ME and possibly African and Asian orders announced but nothing 'major' in terms of numbers.
MoM? I reckon Boeing WILL announce something.... But not launch it at DAS unless Emirates has signed on a launch customer. Perhaps Qatar will announce its launch to spoil EK and EY's little party....
Military? I'd hope for some more clarity on KSA's P-8 Poseidon plans... And maybe some fighter contracts signed, but again, nothing major.
The other possibility.... Emirates reveals a new/modified livery....
Cheers,

Emirates will make a choice between the A350 and 787-10. I think the latter is more likely (slightly bigger jet, lower costs, not "too much airplane," and Etihad ordered it so the climate can't totally kill off all of its performance).

Qantas only recently announced "Project Sunrise" so I don't think they'll announce a commitment (either A350ULR or 777-8) this year, but if Airbus or Boeing offer them a really REALLY killer deal they may pull the trigger. This is unlikely though.

Virgin Australia? Unlikely, but they might announce their fleet renewal for their widebody jets. If they do so I suspect they'd retire the A330s and 777s and consolidate to A350-900s (a fleet of 737 MAX narrowbodies and A350-900 widebodies seems a good fit for them, and the former are already on order. Plus their owners... SQ and EY... and their US pal DL... are heavy A350 customers). This is very unlikely.

Etihad? They have fleet renewal already planned so no announcements. Ditto Qatar. Both EY and QR have orders for all the upcoming aircraft families. That said I presume Akbar Al Baker will, if he's even allowed to attend the show (I don't know if the diplomatic sanctions have ended), probably say something stupid/offensive/silly/funny/memorable.

European airlines? Maybe a few A330neo orders perhaps (from Europe its a very effective jet since it can do Africa, North and even some of South America, and all of Asia). But don't European airlines prefer to announce at Farnborough and Paris?

US airlines? I have no clue.

Boeing may officially reveal the new MoM/Medium-Range-767-Replacement. If so, they'll probably do so with a series of orders from US and European airlines (since the jet will be best for thinner TATL routes). If any of the Middle Eastern airlines show interest in the 767 it will be Qatar and Oman... I think EK and EY are much too capacity-fetishist/slot-constrained to be interested.

Airbus? I don't think they'll announce anything big.

Bombardier? Maybe a new C Series order (hoping!). Or maybe a CS500 stretch? Both very unlikely.

Embraer? No clue. That said, given the local culture of Dubai I am certain that if Embraer make any announcements, these announcements will not be accompanied by dancing Samba ladies.

Interesting comments. I think the IAG group might order some additional A350's. I see some 339 orders coming from either Asian or European carriers.

I do not believe EK will order the A380plus. They have been clear they want a re-engined and re-winged plane......not something with a cabin change and winglets. I think too small ball for them.

Boeing will announce some 78J orders.....either from EK or elsewhere, along with a handful of Max orders. More teasing on the MOM but no launch yet.

I truly think EK will want to make some kind of splash. That's about it.

I think there is a good chance of an EK order for the A350 or 787. Maybe both.

797 launch is another good possibility.

I'm hoping Airbus relaunches the Plus with a moderate stretch and redesigned wings. With winglets that can be retrofitted.

Would Delta announce a narrowbody order at Dubai? It would be interesting if DL ordered the most airplanes at that show.

Excellent point because DL is in the process of starting to retire their large fleet of MD-88's. There are obviously many options in the 140-180 seat range. I would guess almost anything is possible when they finally decide to make an announcement. I think we all can assume whatever they decide upon DL will hammer out a very good price.

They know that the A380 is perfect for them and they officially told this to the press.

They did? Um... when, and in what venue?

IAG CEO Willie Walsh said at the Growth Frontiers 2016 conference in Dublin not only the sentence, that they prefer used A380s because of the high price of new ones, but also the following sentence: "So the A380 works extremely well for us and we are prepared to increase our fleet beyond the 12 we are planning to get."

Fair enough, on this one then.

EK said it will only order additional A380s, if Airbus can show other customers for this aircraft.

Again, where did that airline say anything of the sort???

Aviation Week reported the following on the 21th of June: While Emirates is interested in principle in ordering more A380s over time, Clark indicated that the changes alone proposed as part of the A380-plus concept will not do the trick. “They need to put the A380s into other airlines,” he said.

This however is NOT the same as what you said.

It's Tim Clark whining about shouldering the cost. But he did not say that EK would ONLY order if others did.

I'm hopeful Emirates will announce it's decision from the A350/787 RFP, although recent developments have been quiet on that front.

Other members have stated that the decision had already been made.

Must've missed that, the previous thread was quite lengthy. Did those members state which aircraft family was chosen ?

This is just a gut feeling but Emirates will do with Boeing what it did when it axed the A350 in favor of more A380's but this time it will reduce the massive 777X order and convert them to 787's.

Would Delta announce a narrowbody order at Dubai? It would be interesting if DL ordered the most airplanes at that show.

Unlikely given the current strain between the US3 and the ME3.

The A380 Plus was already launched.

Like someone said Kuwait Airways B777 top up order,Obviously Emirates will order either A350 or B787 possibly A330NEO and EgyptAir as they have said they wanted to order new aircraft to replace something like 33 older aircraft

Maybe orders from Indian airlines like Vistara and Spicejet. They can place some widebody orders.

That might actually be quite logical. Trading in 777x orders for 78X orders. Gives them more flexibility in years to come, if the need arises, they could always reorder the 777X. This will not please Boeing though, 777X isn't doing that well, except in the Middle East.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Akbar Al Baker will complain about something that no one else cares about. If he is allowed into Dubai to attend the show. After all sense the Blockade he has been surprisingly quiet.
