I think the most important part of this news is that Ankara based government owned Havelsan has provided the 737-800NG simulators for TK's new training center. This is a major achievement for future.

Nice catch, I was focused on the building. Very nice indeed. Luftnasa has also a very nice Training Center in Frankfurt.

Last month Havelsan delivered also a helicopter simulator to Qatar Air Forces. Seems they can produce simulators for various Air Vehicles.

Great results for August.

While not directly related to airlines, but certainly an indication of things to come Moodys upped its forecast GDP growth rate for Turkey following 5.1 growth in Q2. Turkey actually forecast to have the top economic growth of any G20 nation excluding China and India.

I just flew on TK's sole 737-700. TC-JKO is kind of unique in the TK fleet! Anyone know the story behind this bird, and why TK only has one 737-700 in their fleet?

I also visited the TK IST lounge for the first time during my layover. Wow, what an impressive lounge. Puts so many other lounges to shame. Has TK said anything about their lounge at the new Istanbul airport?

737-700s have been leased during phaseout of 737-400, all have been picked from secondhand market (amexico etc) for both TK and anadolujet for 3-5 years for the period till arrival of ordered 321s and 738s
I think TK keeps single 737 becuase of high penalty of early return othetwise it does not make sense

For an airline of that size, maintaining load factor of 78% is pretty impressive. And a 6% increase in pax numbers is pretty good too

I don't put much trust in the 748i rumours, but it will certainly be interesting to see which of the 787/350 TK goes for. That said, I suspect politics will dictate this order to a considerable extent, as it is likely to be a large one.

Whats wrong with them??
You dont need to like TK but you can still be fair and objective. You seem to forget that in the first quarter TK laid almost 10% of its capacities off.

If you want to say it could be better by showing Pegasus performance, than do not forget that a Legacy Carrier is not and cannot be as flexibel as LCCs.
Compare what is comparable. TK grewed faster than its European Peers.

It makes sense to keep the bird and not terminate any obligations and pay penalties.

Who's talking about likes hates? These are corporations, not pet animals. We can be proud of their success or embarrassed of their customer service but I do not like or hate corporations, sorry. That's why I tend to be more objective than those who like or love these corporations and tend to look away when things aren't going so well. I of course would want TK to perform better, but a lot of people confuse two things: "saying things aren't that perfect at TK" is not the same as "wishing things to be not perfect at TK". I am clearly doing the first, not the second. I hope things are indeed getting better and these miraculous numbers aren't just a result of Russian tourist boom. A slow rise in RPK vs a rapid pax increase points to more short haul pax parried than before.

And I wasn't quoting your PC post for a specific reason, this forum for some reason doesn't let one quote a previous post of a poster.

Honest and objective criticism is always valuable, but it would be more honest and more objective if you considered the circumstances TK had in this time frame. I.e. its capacity cuts in 1Q17, electronics ban for almost 3 month to USA and UK, probably bound to agreements of 5 A332 for Russian Charter etc pp.

PAX numbers growing faster than RPK is also not necessarily a bad sign. TKs bread&butter business is short-/medium haul. And dont forget TKs huge Domestic and also growing network.

I think he meant ground-breaking or laying foundation of the Terminal Building.

Afaik there where extensive groundworks and testing before that. The tender was in 2013 and none of the consortiums knowed the area exactly as it was kept secret.
There were also major changes made to the masterplan and this was very disputed at that time. Official land handover and official construction works start was in 2015 I think.

As for BER... a new official opening date will be announced after the elections, in October.
Both maybe can open simultaneously in 4Q18.
But if they will be operational, we will see... BER having the edge as everything is completed.

Turkish pilots recalled to plug gaps in depleted air force

Decree mandates return after Erdogan’s purge leaves holes in fighter jet ranks

As a busy summer flying passengers around the world drew to a close, most Turkish Airlines pilots were looking forward to a relaxed autumn. Instead, the government dropped a bombshell.

An emergency decree published late last month announced that scores of former fighter jet pilots face a mandatory recall — or risk losing their licences. Between 200 and 300 civilian pilots, many of whom work for the national flag carrier, could now be summoned back to fill a shortage in the air force created by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s purge of the military after last year’s failed putsch, analysts and pilots say.

I see, but surely groundwork could not have started before 2013 or '14, so still, all that progress in only 3-4 years.

AFAIK re. BER, everything may be completed, but it is still suffering from systems problems such as ventilation, alarm, and emergency warning systems; hence, the lack of a definitive opening date--at least that is my understanding.

Flew BRU-IST on Business last week. It was one of the new 321s with sharklets. (sorry I was tired after flying non stop for 3 days).
The food choice and the service was mediocre at best. The wide regular business class seat was extremely uncomfortable. The service was weird as well. The purser whisked away the food as I was eating. I guess I have been pretty spoiled with Asian flights of Asiana, Korean, Shanghai (yes, they are not bad at all), Cathay Dragon and Cathay business class service.

IST airport is a zoo. This morning flew IST-ZRH on my favorite flight (TK 1907 - reference to the Fenerbahce futball team). They only had 4 security lanes open on the international departures. The floors were not clean. Besides the overcrowding issue, there is this low light, heavy air issue at the terminal. I think TAV has given up on this building already.

TK seems to have been sending their 77W to some really random places recently. Ljubljana, Lyon and Marseille have all seen 77Ws this week. Obviously there's some reasoning to that. I'm guessing there was some sort of event in Ljubljana because they upgauged some of their 738 flights to A321s and there were some additional flights too.

Ljubljana I guess were Basketball fans due to the Finals in Istanbul.

Lyon and Marseille might be Pilgrimers, the Hajjis are returning.

http://www.kokpit.aero/thy-boeing-787-9-aliyor
Kokpit.aero also reports that TK is about to order 40 x 787-900. Just like rumors earlier this month and Turkish Fleet News' article on it few days ago, all roads lead to 787. Yeay!! Let's see 40 firm, any options, all -900s?
From what I can gather, with the EU-Turkish relations the way they are, TK (as usual politically motivated) moves towards Boeing and I guess it will use tonights dinner between the Turkish and the US president as a platform to announce the deal. I have a feeling many strings (political and military) attached to this deal.
Whatever the case, I'll be happy that my username is a reality after 11 years and will be looking forward to flying in one of those between JFK-IST :)
My prediction is that they will have 42C 231Y seating on the 789.

788 has no advantage over 789. No 788 were ordered after 789 EIS.
There is also no need for 781 as A333 is perfectly suitable for the mission.

I wonder if the plane crash at Ataturk had anything to do with the thunderstorm earlier? Also thanks tkfan for clearing up that question yesterday!
Also regarding the 787s I hope if they are ordered they will free up some A330s which in turn would appear on some routes operated by A321s atm which would then cascade the A321s to some 737 routes. The 737s are really killing me here in DUB!

From what I can see from the early reports it seems like a landing gear issue. After takeoff Pilot called the tower, mentioned landing gear problems and returned to IST for landing and gear collapsed. 35R is closed. Captain lost his life, RIP.

What a tragedy :( . TK departures are normal right now but obviously some really bad arrivals delays. The flight from Malaga has been holding for a hour now. I assume this means departure delays later due to a lack of aircraft on the ground and quite a few diversions.

Just an update, IST is now taking in aircraft. I guess the delays won't be as bad as they could have been then, luckily for the pax.

It is a mess over the skies around IST. I have never seen it like this. Also down to one runway, there are now 10 planes in line to take off. Tower tells pilots to take into account, only one take off every two minutes, pushback accordingly.

It is a mess over the skies around IST. I have never seen it like this. Also down to one runway, there are now 10 planes in line to take off. Tower tells pilots to take into account, only one take off every two minutes, pushback accordingly.

Must be Murphys Law. One of the 17/35 Runways is closed for a week until September 23th for some work.

So all take-offs and landings on 05/23.

They are using 35R for departures and 05 for landings.

The A350-1000 or ULR would of been a better choice for TK. At least Airbus could of discounted the -1000 price only for TK.

Yes, seems to be open again 35R.

A359 and -1000 still in the run.

My bet is 789 and 359+351

This was also leaked earlier this month on "Turkish Aviation" thread.
Could this be finally true and my username after 11 years become a reality ?? :) (Fingers crossed)

From Turkish Fleet News' Facebook page few minutes ago:
"Turkish Airlines selected its new WB Fleet
TK has choices Boeing's Dreamliner for its new Longhaul Fleet. Around 10 Boeing 787-9 would be ordered."

On our thread: https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1374197

This was first on this thread, but first of all out of this site: https://de-de.facebook.com/trfleetnews/

#82 of this months' thread from a.net member "wing", which I had the pleasure of having dinner two nights ago here in NYC.

We have been hearing this for many many years. Here is a personal message I got on June 20th, 2011 from a.net member "PanAm DC10":
"Your username will become reality by the end of this year. Best Regards"

I am sure this piece of news will give us many many months worth of talking points, dreams, speculations. I can't wait :)
Congratulations TK, Congratulations Boeing. Happy Flights and Safe Landings to all.

Now, I celebrate :)

Very good news. Congrats to TK, Boeing and TK787.

After the DC10 and A343 experiences, I think TK only goes for models that are matured and proven. We can say, B789 is a timely decision, in this regard. B789 will give important additional capabilies for TK. I also expect TK to order A359, A339neo and B779 for wb fleet of 2020s.

Great choice, I am so happy that right a/c is selected, this will have good financial results for TK and long haul expansion will be done profitably, needless to say YVR IST is the ideal route for this air craft...of course there is many more in North America, Far East etc.

A 2nd congrats on your username becoming reality!

Personally (for selfish reasons), I am hoping that induction of Dreamliners will make the dropped Istanbul-Osaka, Japan route economically viable again!
