2017 NCAA Football Charters

Thu Aug 31, 2017 2:37 am

I don't see a thread for this, and with the season upon us, might as well get this going now. And to start things off:

Michigan to DFW to play Florida at JerryWorld: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL8 ... /KDTW/KDFW
Buffalo to MSP to play Minnesota: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAY4 ... /KBUF/KMSP

Any idea why they would fly out of GRR instead of AZO?

I doubt that school like Western Carolina could afford the expense of a charter to Hawaii..Even University of Hawaii doesn't charter to the mainland.

Possibly ground equipment? Does AZO have tugs, etc. for mainline equipment? AZO has a 6500 ft runway which should be enough I think for a 737 with football players and cargo. But maybe runway plus length of flight and big football dudes and cargo made it more marginal.

I watched that departure yesterday in GRR. The takeoff roll was way more than 6500'- probably used almost 8000' before rotation. Lots of beef, equipment, and fuel on that flight.

For the Michigan-Florida game at Jerry World, is Delta adding extra flights or upgauging going into and out of DFW this weekend? I seem to recall several years ago, when Michigan and Alabama played at Jerry World, Delta had some BHM-DFW flights, while upgauging DTW-DFW and ATL-DFW.

They used to and have many times and many teams have chartered to Hawaii as well. Believe the conference pays the transportation costs in whole or part anyway so all teams get equal treatment in transportation.

Here's Hawaii going to Michigan last year and on a HA A332 no less ..

Valparaiso getting some potential benefits from recently joining the MVC in other sports, it seems. They haven't used too many charters for their football program, if any, since I moved here five years ago. Was a shock to see the A319 (N309NV) on the main pad on the way into work today.

And in an ironic twist, Gary Airport got Allegiant back, but that's for another thread.

AZO's Runway is to short for the takeoff weight and distance flown.

Yes they almost always fly home right after the game, usually two hours or so after. I don't see where that plane left EUG after it dropped them off so must still be there. Don't see anything on flightaware just yet but keep checking the scheduled departures for EUG and their flight back should show up soon.

I was out there today and didn't see it on the tarmac, but I didn't check the north end, so possibly I missed it. After dark I suppose it won't matter as I wanted to try and snap a few pics. Thanks for the help!

Yes it is very easy. Just look at their football schedule to see what games they have at home. For Saturday games the opposing team's will usually arrive on Friday afternoon so be checking Flightaware on Friday morning under the Enroute or Scheduled Arrivals. As soon as they file the flight plan to EUG it will show up. Can also track Oregon's away games the same way, look for a plane being ferried in empty that morning to carry the team out later.

Flightradar24 is good - but mostly useful for near-real-time info. Flightaware seems to be better for flights in either the past or future.

Yep, we are miserable here in the valley from all the smoke, and the METAR says 1 square mile. Off topic, I was flying the simulator and it turned out pretty accurate with 3/4 mile visibility.

**Remember for events like this the away teams are escorted from hotel to game, so a normal "pretty good bus ride" becomes a lot quicker!

Years ago, one of the universities I was at played at Southern Miss. In addition to runway/airport issues for the charter, the team has a lot of decisions to make about staff/equipment/families/travel party/etc.

My school flew a DL 757 into and out of Jackson because that was nearest hotels that met the all the things the football program needed. We had an awesome group of Mississippi Highway Patrol officers doing our escort from Jackson to Hattiesburg. It was a QUICK trip, compared to how long the drive might normally take.
