So Zoom flew to Phuket...

Sun Aug 13, 2017 10:59 am

While reading Zoom's wikipedia article I found out they even flew to HKT. Didn't knew that until now. Was it only charters during Christmas season or was it part of their scheduled network thus a tag-on to another flight? Quite a long trip from Canada.
BTW, their livery was really nice.

I believe that it was Zoom Airlines, sister company, Zoom UK that operated a few charter flights for a Scandinavian company operating to HKT and BKK if I'm not mistaken.

Yes that's certainly a Zoom UK 767 in the picture. A nice little operation, I had a couple of pleasant flights with them GLA-YYZ-GLA. I also remember the day the operation failed and seeing a blue 757 impounded on the ground at GLA with ground service trucks parked around it to prevent it moving.

.... and sometimes 3 Zooms on the ground at GLA at once. Didnt the owners dabble ik all sorts of travel co and airlines over the years?
Obviously West Jet, Air Transat and Rouge have mopped up the capacity to UK

Yes you are right, Zoom UK 767 operated flights for Nordic tour operator(s) to Thailand, at least on Billund-Phuket it seems. Their 767 was also leased for HEL-HKT flights for 2008-2009 but Zoom went bankrupt before that.

Alright, so flights to HKT were charters operated by Zoom UK, the short-lived sister company of Zoom Canada. Makes more sense. Not sure I've known back that there was two Zoom airlines.

To all intents and purposes it was the same airline with Canadian and UK divisions. The business was set up by Scottish travel and football millionaires John & Hugh Boyle, John was also chairman and owner of Motherwell FC football club in the Scottish Premiership. They ran several holiday package operations in the UK/Scotland, with Direct Holidays being the biggest and best well known. Zoom came about when Hugh decided to set up an airline in Canada to take advantage of a gap in the market there, I daresay the entire operation could have been a UK based one too. The press over here certainly seemed to promote it as a 'new venture by Scottish travel duo, The Boyle Brothers' whereas as I got the impression Canadians saw it more as their airline.

Yes it wasn't unusual to see two Canada bound 763's and a 757 on the ramp all at once.

Ok, hence why they both folded the same day.

CWL
EDI

Not sure but if they flew from NCL.

While we are on the topic, I'm sure Thomson used to send the 767 to Phuket, again a bit of a trekk.

Thomson sent their Boeing 767's to Phuket for years usually with a fuel stop at Sharjah in the UAE.

Slightly off topic but even the British airline Paramount Airlines during the early 1990's flew MD83 from the UK to GOA with two fuel stops en route from various UK airports, that's what you call a bit of a trek.

Really miss seeing this beautiful blue jet when they flew YYZ-POS (Trinidad).
