World Airways' "big plans for the future" - October 1980

Sat Aug 12, 2017 12:41 am

I just came across these pictures of a brochure published by World Airways in October 1980 to advertise for their scheduled flights and the great service they offered, especially in their own first class named Luxury Class.

Front cover with their very inspired slogan: https://flic.kr/p/gYtvjs

A map of all their destinations at the time and all the places they were hopeful to serve in the future: https://flic.kr/p/gYuozR

Seating map of their aircraft. strangely they didn't cram as many seats as possible in Y, while in Luxury they had diner table: https://flic.kr/p/gYtt56

Really wonder how successful they were with their Luxury Class that was apparently charged the same price as a full economy seat in a regular airline, according to a report I saw the other day on Flight International's archives.

World had dense Y cabins. 3-4-3 in Y on the DC-10s was one more seat than the standard 2-5-2 of the era (or 2-4-2 of a decade earlier)>

You are right, but just in the all Y DC-10 where they had 354 seats they could have had 380 and since they were proposing trans-Atlantic flights at just £135 one-way peak time fares, they had to have more seats to cover their costs. In the report I linked above they even talk of a $88 one-way transcontinental fare.

True, even, on the sad side, the story of a woman who lost her father and brother in flight #30 accident at BOS in 1982, when the front section of the DC-10 got separated from the rest of the aircraft.
