Bravo if that's what actually occurs in your operation. The point, I think, is that it's hit-or-miss, and there are plenty of 125 operations that don't. Moreover, merely as a matter of size and longevity, an airline like a Delta has tribal knowledge and experience that isn't really possible to replicate, and a safety culture that is hard to beat.

It's not uncommon though for the same aircraft to remain on footy duty all day long, as we have had it this pre-season with Delta already, where one B757 flew two different teams on the same day.

Atlas is flying the Cardinals and Jags..

And there you go. Omni can do the Ravens in a 767-300 or even a 777. Atlas can do the Cardinals and Jags in a 767-300 or (as they just did with the Jags) one of 3 747-400 pax birds they have available for charter. It appears that for both the Cardinals and Jags recently, Atlas used the second Sonair aircraft. That's a sweet layout: 10 in FC suites, 143 in Business Class, 36 Y, but even the Y is nice. They distinguish between "business" and "premium economy" on the Houston Express, but IIRC, it's service only; the seats are the same nice huge-legroom business seats.

The players and coaches should be very happy with that airplane. It's one heck of an upgrade from an AA 767.

...And yesterday, a sports radio guy in AZ mentioned the charter this week will also be a 747, albeit with no wifi.

Same for that Atlas 747.

My point was that UA/DL/etc. don't "assign a plane" to a team.

So does the 2 airplane usage by some teams indicate a shortage of widebodies available for charter?

The teams getting down to 53 players now so maybe a single 738 could be enough.

53 players, 20+ coaches, 10+ trainers and conditioning, 20+ support personnel (equipment, video, etc), 10 or so executives, you're looking around 120+ people at a conservative estimate. Probably two person per set of three seats for comfort, not sure what the layout of Miami Air's 738s are, but assume around 30 rows, that would be right at 120 people. With some of the operations the teams are running, it's feasible that the number could be up towards 150, which would necessitate two 738s, whereas others can get away with a single UA 753 with 126 spread across economy and a further 24 in business

During this pre-season the teams were allowed to have 90 players on their roster for all 4 pre-season games. Once the regular season starts the teams will have 53 players plus a 10 player practice squad. So the 90 players are in addition to all the coaches, trainers, etc that were previously mentioned.

It indicates that after AA pulled out of servicing several teams, the individual teams found different solutions.

I pointed out that Omni and Atlas had widebodies available, but the teams weren't asking me. So Miami Air got the contract for two teams. Atlas got the contract for two teams, and is using the Sonair backup 747 for that service. (Sonair won't let just anybody charter "their" aircraft, but I guess a football team seemed an appropriate use.) Atlas has a number of other 747s and 767s in pax config that it primarily uses for mil charter; wonder whether it could have serviced an additional team or two. Same for Omni, which has 767s and 777s in pax config that are often used on mil charter. Omni is doing the Ravens on a 767, it seems.

I'm not besmirching Miami Air -- it's a very-reputable charter airline accustomed to handling demanding clientele, as I mentioned above. But it's a more-complicated thing to have 2 aircraft rather than one, and it necessarily splits the team up for the trip. If having everyone together isn't important, then it's a perfectly-acceptable solution.

Philadelphia used AA9475 for their flights to and from Kansas City last weekend. It was an A332. Curiously, the plane (N290AY) left after it dropped them off and went to Charlotte only for the same plane to come back the next day. Maybe American took the opportunity to do some light overnight maintenance, because that sure isn't efficient routing.

The team's headquarters and practice facility is in Ashburn, Virginia which is just north of Dulles. The stadium however is in Landover, Maryland. The Redskins always fly in and out of IAD. Visiting teams fly into IAD but depart out of BWI.

The Redskins flight number is UA2533.

Did the Bears drive up to GRB for tonight's game? I see their usual UA2539 GRB-ORD is scheduled for tonight, but I cannot find a flight record of them going from ORD to either ATW or GRB (unless they chartered a bunch of 50 seat jets!!). Google news search did not yield any results about taking buses.

They have bussed before up and flown back, very rarely will any team do a round trip bus. After the game, understandably, they want to get home. A few years back the Falcons bussed up and back to Charlotte and it did not go over too well.
