Status of AA's MD-80's ... Current and Future Routes

Tue Aug 01, 2017 3:40 pm

Hi Guys,

I know this has been discussed before, but I haven't seen anything in the forum for quite a while now, so I figured this is worth a go. What is the current status of American's MD-80's? How many are left in the fleet and what routes still see and will see the type as we head into fall?

Thanks! :)

Currently the MD-80 fleet is sitting at 53 strong. I do not know all of the routes for sure but it would appear that most of them are working in the mid western U.S. The aircraft seem to be leaving many stations. I was scheduled to fly one from DFW-ABQ a few weeks ago however, they were pulled from ABQ! I hope this helped.

The MD80's aren't quite done with ABQ yet. One will come back from Aug 5-22 on the 505am red-eye then there will be a few during balloon fiesta in early Oct replacing some Eagle/Mesa CR9's.

They are still rumbling in and out of MKE to DFW. I checked two random dates in Oct and Nov and they are still showing listed on their site for flights to/from DFW. Not sure if that will change before then though

Most of the intra-TX routes still have a fair amount of frequencies on the S80. Off the top of my head, a sampling:

DFW to:
AUS
SAT
ELP
OKC
TUL
MCI
STL
MSY
CMH
PIT
CLE
MKE

and oddly, the early morning ORD-MCO has been an S80 recently.

I just did a quick search of ORD-DFW for October 18th, and shockingly there is not a single MD-80 scheduled on the route! There are 8 738's, 2 A321's, 1 757 and 1 777 assigned to the flights. Kind of sad considering this used to be a heavy MD-80 route.

The removal of the MD-80s from AA and specifically ORD has opened me up to flying AA again. I know I will get burned for this as an aviation enthusiast but I didn't like flying on them, especially AA's versions...

But it looks like ORD-DFW loses it fairly quickly after.

Yeah looks like they'll have to shuffle them through an outstation to get them between hubs. Do we know when these last planes are being retired? I always heard the end of this year.

They turn to 737's on the 22nd of August.

Also on the 22nd of August DFW-VPS will see the S80 and ORD-BZN on Saturday's through 7th of October.

OMG thank you so much for that information!!! My friend and I have been desperately trying to go spot the last AA MD-80 flights at ABQ and were very disappointed when we didn't see any more in the schedule. Time for a trip to the airport!

I thought it was supposed to be 52 currently...and like last year, I'm thinking 20 or so will be dropped in late August.

So do the remaining 32 get dumped by the end of the year?

Another mass, one-day retirement like last year?

According to AA's fleet plan at the start of the year, 25 will be retired this year. The remaining 32 will be retired at some point next year once 737 MAXs start coming in thick and fast.

The 32 at year end was revised to 42, to replace lost Air Wisconsin service.

Yes! I will take an S80 over a YV POS CRJ-900 any day! Glad they are going to ABQ! Want a few more rides!

So they'll be starting 2018 with 42. So I'd imagine a few will go in the 1st quarter, and the rest would go at the end of summer. That is my assumption.

Really? Do you have a link to confirm this. I was of the under the impression AA wanted to dump their MD-80's fairly quickly. The youngest plane in the fleet is nearly 18 years old.

Last I heard was they'd all be gone by the end of Q1 2018

Per Robert Isom in a employee meeting July 11th..30 MD80s will stay into 2019. It's on video but I'm not allowed to post it here.

And COS stays! Happy dance! Nothing like hearing and seeing them fly over. She is an elegant lady, it will be a sad day when they are no longer gracing our skies.

Wow! I guess AA want to fly these birds until they get their full monies worth or until they literally start to fall apart. :-D

As long as oil stays cheap, say $55 a barrel and lower, then the only reason to retire any given MD-80 will be required maintenance. If oil starts a run-up, even to $70 a barrel, I assume that the retirement schedule is accelerated.

By the same token, if an RJ operator has trouble fulfilling its flying obligations, AA can slot in MD-80s to cover that flying. A few years ago, my roundtrip from ORD to IAH was had E175s swapped for MD-80s, because Republic was having staffing issues.

The only problem with swapping Eagle aircraft for an MD-80 is that fares may have to be lowered, in order to fill seats. When AA did the E175 to MD-80 swap, fares dropped significantly.

I agree. I don't have status, so I'd always end up near the rear of the plane which is loud as hell. Plus, overhead space is significantly smaller than any of the A320 or 737's.

Earlier today I looked up and saw N965TW coming into ORD. I forgot to look, but I assume it was from DFW.

I know the chances of it happening are slim to none, but it would be nice if they repainted the last remaining ex-TW MD-80 in its delivery colors as a tribute.

(only with the correct white fuselage instead of the gray one on N915NN)

To be fair, you can say the same thing about the 737 and 777-200 fleets. N770AN was delivered in January 1999 and N901AN followed the next month.

I won't burn you, maybe singe you a little...but I've heard the 319's are brutal on the legroom, of course I have 3 out of 4 flights on my December STL-MIA-GCM-MIA-STL booked on those things so I'll see how it goes. I'll take the noise of the MD's over no legroom any day.

With so few Mad Dogs left....why does ORD even have any? I'm very surprised that they are not consolidated @ DFW.

Those are the oldest examples in the fleet.. not the youngest. So no, not "the same thing."

Sure glad to see some of these markets with high frequency Eagle flights pick up a mainline jet or two like DFW to AMA and LBB. Glad to see VPS picking up MD80's. Hope LIT and XNA get AA mainliners back as well. Seems to be at least a temporary solution to the staffing issues going on with many carriers; use larger aircraft with less frequency. Maybe we'll see more widebodies return on DFW-LAX, LGA, MIA, PHX, etc.

Most MD-80 pilots switch to the 738.

Agreed. VPS is likely picking up mainline due to business traffic, and AA continues to have a longstanding, strong presence in West Texas.

I think that's quite possible on and off over the next 18-24 months - those are two of the shorter-haul, formerly-partially-mainline markets where AA has a strong penetration with corporate traffic and thus premium demand is likely healthy.

As AA's widebody fleet evolves, I think that is going to be relatively less likely - outside of specialized, seasonal utilization flying - going forward. AA's widebody fleet is going to be losing 767s and A330s in the coming months, and replacing them with 787s and A350s. Relatively speaking, I think the former are far more likely to be used domestically, in a meaningful and regularly-scheduled way, than the latter which are designed and purpose-built to be exceptionally economical long haul machines.

I suppose with so many MD-80's now in the desert, they won't have a problem for parts with the "youngest" planes they plane on keeping in the fleet for longer. Given the recent deferrals with the deliveries of the A350 and 787, AA have clearly decided that they can afford to slow down their fleet renewal and save on CAPEX for the next couple of years. When AA started the huge overhaul of their fleet the price of oil was around or over $100. Given there isn't any indication that the price isn't going to rocket up any time soon, I guess its a prudent move on their part and the MD-80 fans can enjoy seeing the plane for an extra year or so. :-)

Wasn't there some sort of modification that had to be done by year-end 2017?
