According to AA's fleet plan at the start of the year, 25 will be retired this year. The remaining 32 will be retired at some point next year once 737 MAXs start coming in thick and fast.

The 32 at year end was revised to 42, to replace lost Air Wisconsin service.

Per Robert Isom in a employee meeting July 11th..30 MD80s will stay into 2019. It's on video but I'm not allowed to post it here.

To be fair, you can say the same thing about the 737 and 777-200 fleets. N770AN was delivered in January 1999 and N901AN followed the next month.
