Guinness is a lot less black in a glass in light than the marketing would make you think. Current advertising refers to it as "ruby red" although they still run old ads calling it black.

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!! Delighted! The most significant route announcement from Dublin since Emirates.

My happiness at this as a regular traveller to Asia and a big fan of Hong Kong itself.

It was actually the Hainan rumour that convinced me this was going to happen when I saw the "Beer destinations" thread. the DAA box clever with this stuff, and tried the same lark before EK announced with the AI rumour.

Excellent result for Dublin. A quality carrier too with connections at both ends if desired. And further, multiple onward routings to Australia and NZ, providing an alternative to the ME3, which I suspect will be popular with the many Irish and Antipodeans who visit each other's regions.

Presumably the summer SNN-BOS service operated by an Omni 767-200.

The new saver fare isn't quite the bare bones option I was expecting, still get a meal for example. It's not particularly cheap either, the one way fares of €169 and €146 look great but only work as part of a return option, would be far more interesting to see a proper no frills fare on the Atlantic from Aer Lingus with the option to book a one way only flight.

It relates to the 767 operation out of Shannon for the past few years. It wasn't in place this summer but I could see it returning should EI want to put the 757 somewhere else from DUB, like a return of the morning JFK service.

CX's HKG announcement is very good news for DUB. Now all we need is for EI to rejoin OneWorld for once!

The saver fare is much better than I expected. It's nice to get more amenities and pay a little more than on Norwegian. The price is still low for a TATL flight.

RE Cathay, Yes I wonder if EI becoming part of IAG and soon to be oneworld had any bearing on the decision....I'd be surprised if there was any future codeshare however, but you never know...

Only issue is they still need to compete on oneways. I know someone who recently needed a oneway DUB-NYC. EI was €650 ( flight was not even full ) and Norwegian was €250 and that included 2 x 20KG and free seat selection. Now there will always be different comparisons but even booking well ahead EI fail to compete.

Fantastic and somewhat unexpected news about Cathay.

I hope it wont put Hainan off opening a route, a Beijing Connection would still do very well I reckon.

Oneways TATL are insane across nearly every carrier. I need a oneway to the US in January and am looking at a minimum of 550, when as part of a return the same leg is 240

It will be fascinating to see who they rob premium traffic from, be it the ME3 or the BA, LH and AF/KLs of this world.

Will also be interesting to see if it slows Finnairs expansion at Dublin, as they carry a lot of transfers to the Far East and the second rotation is making them much more user friendly. Pity Cathay wont be charging Finnair business class prices.

An EI code share might also generate some transfer traffic for Cathay from the ATRs, but IAG may not be thrilled about generating traffic for Cathay, or reducing feed through Heathrow.

Interesting times

Saver Fare seems to be a way for Aer Lingus to dip their toes in the water before going for a totally no frills fare offering on the Atlantic in the short to medium term.

It's a lower overall base fare but all you really miss out on is a checked bag, nobody needs a blanket and with the new IFE having a standard jack most people will use their own headphones. The meal remaining included in the price shows Aer Lingus is either not quite ready or see no reason to go further and offer a completely basic fare or cabin yet.

This new fare option will work in the sense that it appears to compete with Norwegian but won't cost much for Aer Lingus, it'll get enough people interested which will keep Norwegian working hard to maintain yields.

One ways across the Atlantic will happen at some stage, I can see it happening if Aer Lingus choose to create an entirely new cabin down the back but that's only if there's a true need for it financially and right now that's a long way off, no matter how well Norwegian claim they're doing. Some legacy carriers still charge astronomical fares on short haul one ways, look at Finnair wanting £400 to fly LHR-HEL recently! The industry will be slow to change things on long haul, the need for one way long hauls is small but growing.

Is there any update on HU's PEK announcement?

To think we have waited years for a service to Asia and yet we could have two within a year...

Just wanted to add a few words on the HKG flight. I am delighted! I'm actually quite surprised, but that only makes the news all the more special and welcome. And a 350 too ... and unlike ET, decent schedules from a photography viewpoint! The sight of a 350 taking off from 10 at a high weight will be something to behold!

Geographically, HKG is very well situated (as CX itself says, "the heart of Asia"); that will be great for both flight connections and freight. I can see it being a very good route for cargo.

The only thing that would have made it even better would have been if my username was still open ... ;-)

Great news indeed.
Interesting that the new CX to Copenhagen is to be summer only and at three per week, as compared to DUB at 4 weekly.
BRU already has Hainan so perhaps.........

Saver fare question - do this just remove a pillow and blanket from a seat and allocate it to a saver fare passenger or how do they distinguish between other passengers ?? , really seems a bit silly

Certainly is and great to see more OW presence at DUB. All we need now is the official date for EI integrated into OW. Nice to have A350 service too.

I honestly thought the runway length would mean DUB would never get a direct Far East service, this announcement proves how more efficient modern airliners really are. Another flight for the bucket list!
Roll on T3! Before DUB turns into total gridlock!

It should be on the passenger manifest but how it will work out in real life will indeed be interesting. I guess similar to when someone pre orders a meal or special meal etc they know who is Saver. There will no doubt be some misunderstandings/arguments.

The EI109 returned shortly after departure with a hydraulics problem, blocked the runway for a while resulting in a change to runway 16 & some holding. The EWR flight also diverted to KEF with a medical issue.
