MAN continues to grow in October. Obviously the full impact of Monarch's demise has not yet been felt, but it gives cause to believe the trajectory can remain an upward one.

Rolling 12 month total: 27,732,67
October 2017 total: 2,404,521
Year on year growth: +3.1%

Still larger in October than STN, so reason to believe that position can be comfortably maintained while the Monarch capacity is back filled.

Time for my monthly review of the CAA data statistics......

Manchester Statistics - September 2017 (Part 1)

Destinations that are either new (no passengers since my records started in January 2005), or have not been served for a number of years - if the latter then the month and year of the last service is shown.

No new routes to report - although Kiev (Borispol) appeared as a 'one off'.

Only one domestic statistic is currently missing from the CAA report for September.

Exeter is missing from the initial monthly statistics for September. In September 2016 the flown passenger figure for this route was 9,724.

Moving monthly and annual figures - based on CAA statistics

Monthly passengers - 2,867,212 + 7.4%
Annual Total- 21,752,889
Moving Annual Total - 27,643,286 + 11.3%

Monthly Movements - 19,197 + 6.7%

Early breakdown of the released Monarch slots 3 extra Ryanair, 6 extra easyJet 2 extra Jet2 (including long-haul), new Vueling 2 aircraft base, BA Cityflyer up to 3 weekend ERJs and ops by LOT, Croatian, airbaltic and Tunisair . Plenty of time for all this to be shaken up though!

Exciting times ahead for the Airport yes. easyJet have always had faith in the MAN market therefore i wouldn't expect anything less. Where they will expand to however is going to be interesting. The bucket and spade markets have lost capacity but to the airlines are going to be thriving on the fact that yield is likely to improve, thus revenue and profit.

I cannot see Jet2 expanding into long haul just yet, i think there is still a lot that they can do in Europe (new destinations) and new bases in the UK. I can however see them using a 2nd A330 for the expansion of seats - especially filling in the void of Monarch. AGP, ALC, ACE, FAO, TFS. I wouldn't be surprised to see PFO up there and DLM or AYT or both thrown in there as they seem to be expanding into those markets quite aggressively for next Summer.

Ryanair are best placed to expand into MAN in the quieter periods however i don't see them not wanting to miss out on this. One of the best things about Ryanair is that whilst they may chase the bucket and spade routes they will also expand into unknown destinations which is great for MAN. They could also add year round destinations which again is fantastic for MAN and the pax numbers.

Don't forget TUI/TCX in this too. They will probably want a slice of the pie; and i wouldn't be surprised to see TUI using even more 787's on short haul to provide seats. Maybe an extra aircraft from both. Same with TCX wouldn't be surprised to see the A330 on short haul routes next summer to provide seats.

The other things is going to be the shuffling of ops.

Monarch based 9 aircraft at T2. The ripple effect may be that we see easyJet assume control of the T2 vacated gates. That frees up 9 gates at T1 - Jet2 can add in 2 aircraft there. Vueling can decide that T1 is for them so transfer their limited T3 ops over. 5 gates to fill. Lets' see. Could they shunt some of the Flybe services over (is it feasible for them to do split T3/T1 ops?) which would then free up space for Ryanair to add 3 aricraft at T3?

How is it that BA doesn't consider establishing a second hub at Manchester Ringway? Primarily, A320s and B788s (when the B78Js arrive; right now, it could be 3-class B772s) could be based there.

The weekend Cityflyer base along with Sun Air and BA to Heathrow is actually functioning as a small hub.

It’s not going to set the world on fire, but, there are a few connecting from other carriers to the weekend flights. I’m aware that at least 6 connected from the AA PHL to the BA Mykonos one day. Yes, 6 is a very small and usually insignificant number, but when you consider the smaller capacity of the E190, the fact Mykonos was just 1 weekly and the fact MAN wasn’t supposed to be a hub, then consider this was happening to all of the flights, it’s actually quite remarkable.

I think this is a reasonable question.

Its not a question about feasibility, or whether it would make money. It's whether it would make enough money, compared with adding extra/new services to "X" from LHR and/or LGW.

From BA's perspective it is about achieving a certain return on investment. Since 2008, BA's position has been that this return has not been possible on regional UK flying, due to a number of factors including BA's market positioning, historical cost base and economic weakness in the regions.

In recent years, BA's market positioning (regardless of what they now profess to the contrary) has been to fall in line with low cost competition, with a sprinkling of Club World at the front. Also, their cost base has been chipped away with things like the mixed fleet contracts and the regions are undergoing something of an economic renaissance which may be underpinned by political devolution. Finally, how much more money can BA make flying yet another LHR-JFK rotation for example? This is probably comparable to the money they could make on a MAN-JFK rotation. This all makes BA better placed to achieve that desired return on investment in the regions.

However, BA cannot really jump in, get their feet burned and withdraw - that would set them back 10 years. It will be hard for them to regain market at places like MAN. Competition to all points heading east, and strong westbound networks by TCX, VS/DL and the other US legacies at MAN makes it tough to see how they could implement a network with the right critical mass in the right markets to be a success and make money.

Level is a possibility, but I don't see what that would achieve as opposed to TCX and it wouldn't capture the premium demand BA are losing to the likes of VS, EK et al.

Provisional BA Cityflyer timetable for S18.

All the routes below are bookable, except for Florence, which will be announced very soon, but the times are confirmed internally.

There looks to be 3 based aircraft, however one is a back up for the network. S17 saw 18 flights, but so far, S18 is 28 weekly flights. There is also likely to be another route announced as aircraft 2 arrives 2310 sat but then doesn’t have a flight until 1445 Sunday. My guess would be Faro, as it’s a popular route that could produce the yield needed for Cityflyer. All in all, not a bad increase and nice to see BA continuing to expand in the regions.

The sole An22 paid a flying visit today and is due back next week. Additionally, Lufthansa diverted in a 744 due medical issues.

Didn't see it - office in the city centre where I work got scafffolding round the outside with sheeting put up. Looking at the flight track, it seems to have come directly above where I live..knew I should have pulled a sickie! Going to plan my lunchtime next week to be outside for when it heads home to .. it should go overhead then.

Whilst I welcome this I am surprised about the additional rotation given that EW have just decreased capacity by replacing A319/A320 with ex-Air Berlin Q400 on certain flights.

I think the use of the Dash-8 may have been down to EW trying to backfill AB capacity on some routes, which will no doubt be balanced back out by the start of the summer schedules.

Eurowings new 2 weekly service to Salzburg starts tomorrow and almost unnoticed is that start of daily operations by Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong. I wonder what they will do should they continue to attract demand (and yield presumably) with the additional frequencies. Back to 777s or dare we hope for extra frequencies?

I’ve been told that MAN may be in line for an increased frequency from the Winter ‘18 timetable, still on A350.

Anybody know the revised schedule for the AN22? It's running way behind the published schedule and is currently in Gandor.

As for Cathay, there's always the A35K going forward?

Think it's the same timings, just delayed by 24 hours, For CX, I'm sure there must be a reason for the current flight numbers being CX219/CX216 and not CX217/CX216 or CX219/CX218.

You would assume the non-consecutive flight numbers (CX219/CX216) is with one eye to this, but you never know what the future holds.

British Airways have announced 1 weekly Florence and 1 weekly Dublin today, starting May 2018.

That’s now 14 destinations served by BA, 2016 just saw 3!

End of day it's 22 diversions handled with MAN impersonating DXB as there's going to be 3 EK A380s on the ground now and tomorrow morning,

A photo of the 3 A380s would be great to see. Good work MAN.

They had time to put out a no div apart from emergencies NOTAM at 7pm which meant nothing that BA was shunting round the country came in. The 2nd A380 was a fuel div. Reckon only 5 or so staying on the ground overnight.

Per the Evening News live blog:
"15:37
20 flights from Manchester delayed or cancelled

Manchester Airport has confirmed the delay or cancellation of 20 flights today.

Although the hub is ‘fully operational’, airlines have been forced to cancel flights due to snow across the country affecting other airports.
The hub has also confirmed there have been diverts into Manchester from other hubs including Birmingham, East Midlands, Luton and Stansted.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before flying.
Manchester Airport remains on standby to take flights from other airports. "

My bold. A BA shuttle and the 2nd A380 came in after that time. So what changed in less than 3 hours? There was 1 extra Ryanair on the ground only.

In VS news (discussed on separate thread) is appears that VS are leasing some (reported up to 4) ex Air Berlin A332s to base at MAN so the A333s can cover B789 shortage at LHR (caused by engine trouble). There will be painted and internally refitted to VS standards by the start of the summer season.

Negative is that MAN experiences disruption due to prioritising LHR (not surprising and understandable).

Positive is that VS are jumping through a lot of hoops to keep the MAN base operational and perhaps growing. The interesting point is that these seem to be based at MAN over the winter, meaning that SFO/BOS may be year round from next year. There may also be enough slack for additional rotations to JFK (for example) or new routes (LAX for example). Worth keeping an eye on.

Also being discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1380423

Another negative is that the ex-Air Berlin planes won't initially have a PE cabin and that will occur later in the year, so anyone who's booked onto flights during Spring/early-Summer that's now scheduled for an A330-200 is likely to be disappointed.

That said, I do agree with the positives and the fact they're looking to maintain their schedules is to be commended. The -200 will probably also be better suited for the SFO route due to having more range than the -300. It'll be interesting to see if they use these to further grow the MAN base, but in terms of frequencies it would be nice to see year-round daily JFK's again unlike this winter where frequencies have been cut. Hopefully they will also be reliable.

November 2017 stats

A conflicting story. Passenger numbers continue to grow at just under 2% despite Monarch's collapse, but cargo is substantially down.

Passengers
Rolling 12 month: 27,764,247
November 2017: 1,731,446
November YoY change: +1.9%

Cargo
November 2017: 10,232
November YoY change: -4.9%

"In November, Manchester Airport, grew passenger numbers 1.2%, with numbers negatively impacted by Monarch Airline’s collapse in October which has left some capacity unused during the current winter season. There has been significant interest from other airlines wanting to operate in slots vacated by Monarch for Summer 2018. Flights are already on sale with Jet2.com, Thomas Cook Airlines and TUI, and more are expected to be announced in the coming weeks."

Loganair have announced 2 new routes, one to Kirkwall and one to Stornoway. Both routes start in June 2018. This brings Manchester to 17 domestic destinations.

Easyjet have also announced a 2 weekly Genoa route, from March 2018. There will be a further announcement in the new year regarding the extra based aircraft.

The two LOG routes are the ones they abandoned in early November, presumably due to poor loads, so just the resurrection of old schedules rather than anything new. Unless they plan to offer direct services to each this time rather than via GLA? They must feel that these routes will work much better in summer.

The LOG routes are not resurrections, as far as I’m aware these routes have never been served non stop from MAN, certainly not in a long long time if they have.

These routes will be non stop. There is also a 3rd new route to Sumburgh too.

They are all non-stop from Loganair.. and it's better! Weekly to Stornoway and Sumburgh with 2 weekly flights to Kirkwall. Additionally, the Inverness route to be extended to Bergen 3 times a week

My apologies - I automatically thought by the destinations that they were simply resurrecting old routes and promoting them as new. Let's hope the direct services work in summer as they certainly didn't in Autumn (albeit there was a brief stop at GLA).

I wonder how long the Dorniers will slave on for? I imagine MAN isn't the only airport seeing new routes/increased frequencies over the summer so surely they're going to need additional aircraft? I did hear from a relatively reliable source that they were trying to get hold of a couple of ATR-72s?

It’s also worth noting that the MAN-GLA-SYY route is still operational, it wasn’t ended. (Assuming that is the route you are referring to?)

I have read on another forum that EL AL have supposedly got plans to resume flights from TLV to MAN twice weekly on a Thursday and Sunday from May 2018 with B738.

I agree, I do wonder which terminal they will fly from/to. I'm also looking forward to 2018 for any new airline's beginning services to MAN.

LOG pulling the GLA route after 19th Jan 2018 apparently. Not sure how this affects the new summer proposals but difficult to see how they would work, given that GLA hasn't succeeded. Granted, different season, but still.....
