Frontier to announce MIA expansion

Mon Jul 17, 2017 5:24 pm

Frontier has set a press conference for tomorrow to announce eight new routes from MIA, five of which are not currently served.

Frontier currently flies to Miami from Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas and Philadelphia. It has flown from Havana and Washington-Dulles in the past. It also seasonally offered LaGuardia, but unclear if that will return (or maybe it will be counted as one of the "new" eight even though it is not new).

It looks like FLL service is ending entirely with the recent schedule update, so maybe Trenton and Cincinnati will move to MIA?

Frontier seems to have made a lot of changes over the last year or two, trying to find routes that work well for them.

Do the MIA routes work well for F9? Will these new routes be domestic routes or international routes? Will F9 fly to the Caribbean too from MIA (outside of what they fly now)?

Putting two and two together with the OKC new route announcement thread and the fact that F9 will be starting some currently unserved routes from MIA, I'm willing to bet that MIA-OKC will be one of the five.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Meanwhile, trying to confirm that Frontier is withdrawing from PDX (and SNA) as reflected in the latest OAG listings. Might find out with these other announcements.

MIA is the F9 new hub of the month? jk But in all seriousness, maybe this one will work for them.
Remind me to send a thank you note to Mr. Boeing.

There's also rumor of a major CVG announcement tomorrow, so I imagine these are related?

I am starting to think so. Apparently a carrier is announcing new flights, destinations, and a connecting hub at Cincinnati tomorrow, so most were thinking DL was going to expand. While I am not sure how F9 plans on adding connections to Cincinnati, all of the Frontier announcements tomorrow seem to suggest that it might be Frontier instead.

Significant System Wide Frontier Announcement Tuesday July 18th

Mon Jul 17, 2017 6:03 pm

There is supposed to be a significant system wide frontier announcement tomorrow. CVG and MIA are rumored to become a bigger part in Frontier's network. CVG might be getting "connecting traffic". Looks like MIA is getting 8 NEW ROUTES! And FLL is getting axed as well as possibly PDX and SNA. Expansions at GRR, OKC and SJC are also rumored. Thoughts?

Considering their schedule only runs through November 1 right now, I would say most likely not.

OAG shows them going to zero in Nov. Can't imagine them staying with no flights to DEN ... or anywhere else.

PVD is getting an A321 nonstop to somewhere with a time gap from an MCO RON to the 3pm MCO departure. That lends itself to a possible morning MIA departure that turns back to do the MCO flight. Could be TPA or RSW as well but something seems to be brewing for MIA with F9...

Yea looks like they may be getting as many as 8 new routes! This i very unlikely but possibly CVG? Allegiant is starting there from CVG. That could be a competition flight and thats a hole in the frontier/s CVG network.

If true, SJC would be a new station for Frontier, correct? Interesting.

It'll be fun to see what is announced tomorrow. Lots of expansion, including possible new stations -- as well as some dumped ones? -- might explain the delay in opening the booking window beyond Nov 1, that people have been talking about a lot lately.

What about SNA-CVG it would have Zero competition?
I don't think a Airbus has the capability of making SNA-MIA.

Or even a daily SNA-AUS was profitable and popular for WN. But they dropped it because slots/seats got taken away for this calendar year.

Same at AUS...
from ABIA Press folks..
Airline to announce expanded service from Austin July 18
AUSTIN, Texas – More flights are coming to Austin! On Tuesday, July 18 an incumbent domestic carrier will announce plans to more than double its number of nonstop destinations from Austin. This announcement will, both, add to the total number of nonstop destinations available out of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and offer additional options to cities currently served.

An airline representative will announce the full list of destinations and provide additional details at a press event at the Barbara Jordan terminal on Tuesday, July 18 at noon. Opportunities for one-on-one interviews with the airline will be available following the official announcement.

Portlanders seem to have been calling for AS to start PDX-DEN (seems like it's been for years now) and maybe F9 suspects it will be happening sooner rather than later. So possibly F9 doesn't feel the market is large enough for 4 cx so they're going to use their resources elsewhere -- like SJC? That would make sense to me.

I've inquired with PDX and F9. PDX just responded and did not deny it. No word from Frontier but I would think if it's not true, they'd have no reason not to deny it.

They still have A319s with some A319NEOs on order. That aircraft, as well as 73G and 752 can make SNA to east coast work.

According to the ABIA website, F9 currently flies to ATL, ORD, DEN, LAS, MCO, PHL, SAN, IAD. So to 'more than double' that would be a LOT of new F9 destinations from AUS. If that's the case, seems pretty obvious that AA is getting some competition on AUS-MIA and G4 might be getting some CVG competition.

Southwest and Alaska already fly PDX-AUS. PDX-MIA would need business class and onward connections (AA), which Frontier doesn't have. Besides, DEN is their main hub. Why would they abandon that?

They are dropping a lot of flying on October 3rd and 4th. I think close to two dozen routes including a lot from RDU, CVG and CLE.

PDX could be going seasonal.

The massive turnaround in Frontier's finances since Indigo took over has been in part because of the embrace of seasonality.

It happens every year these days. Seasonality.

North-south in winter (snowbird season) and east-west in summer.

These were listed on F9's destination page earlier this morning (along with OKC, BUF, and GRR). They've now been removed and only their current destinations are showing.

This leads me to believe that there will probably be a lot of new airports with F9 service being announced tomorrow. ONT, PSP, and RNO are certainly unexpected if they are indeed announced.

What was posted in the OAG thread does not mean Frontier is dropping flights from Denver to Portland or Orange County.

F9 DEN-SNA OCT 2>1.4 NOV 0.1>0.0
F9 DEN-PDX OCT 3>1.5 NOV 0.1>0.0

The key here is that the OAG thread shows these two routes changing from last week’s level of just 0.1 flights per day in November to 0.00 flights per day in November with the new schedule.

The OAG report looks at all the flights scheduled for the entire month and then divides it by the number of days in the month. In this case Frontier’s November schedule was…and still is…just through November 1. So the flight Frontier has scheduled just for November 1 is divided by 30

Prior to the OAG update this past weekend:
Frontier has DEN-PDX at 3/day, and since only November 1st is out there that means 3 November flights.
3 November flights divided by 30 days’ is 0.01 flights per day.

Newly-loaded OAG update this past weekend:
Frontier has DEN-PDX at 1/day, and since only November 1st is out there that means 1 November flight.
1 November flight divided by 30 days rounds to 0.00 flights per day.

The reason we only see this for a few cities such as Portland is that it would only register if the rounded result changed. Until November is pushed out for Frontier beyond just 11/1, the November number in the OAG report doesn’t actually mean anything.

Frontier To Announce 8 New Routes From MIA

Mon Jul 17, 2017 9:20 pm

MIA officials and Frontier executives will hold a press conference tomorrow (July 18) to announce the plans.

Five of the new routes are not currently flown by any airline.

Any guesses?

Coupling with was is noted on the OKC F9 thread, MIA-OKC/BUF/GRR?

MIA/FLL-OKC 62 PDEW
MIA/FLL-GRR 35 PDEW

Higher PDEW cities could be served from MIA

It has been speculated that they are opening a hub at CVG so my guess is all three of these will get Nonstops to CVG
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

F9 seemed to be pulling back from MIA so this is wonderful news! I'll be curious to see the city pairs and if they compete with NK ULCC service from FLL.

Five of the new routes are not currently flown by any airline.

Any guesses?

Based on the flurry of information I'm going to guess

TTN (new)
GRR (new)
OKC (new)
MKE (new)
OMA (new)
AUS (already flown by AA)
CVG (already flown by AA)
BUF (already flown by AA)
