FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

It appears F9 shortened the selling schedule. Never seen that before. Probably an error. None of these are meaningful IMHO.

AUS-AMS came out of nowhere. I was expecting RDU-AMS to come well before then.

It's only 4 RTs total. I would guess it's a stick in the eye to DY.

My morning coffee hasn't quite kicked in yet. After reading that it's only 4 roundtrip flights in March, I'm wanting to think it's for SXSW?

Both of these routes are still bookable on their site. So maybe it's a filling mistake?

I don't follow Tradwind. Is that stuff truly new? Looks like they are messing with Cape Air.

A buddy flies for them - these have been TJ's bread & butter routes for years, they might be publishing a schedule for once. He said on some weekends they'll do up to 10 flights a day in some markets.

That's what I would think, or maybe even capitalizing on the high school spring break travel abroad programs? I couldn't even see it on their website

Probably for South by Southwest. Similar to what they do in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show.

The schedule for Delta's flight looks to slot perfectly in between existing Aeromexico flights - seems like a good early use of the JV to leverage the two carriers' combined strength in one of the most important U.S.-Mexico markets.

Interesting re: AUS-AMS. I would like to think that it is a sign of DL's ambitions in Austin, although, as DTWorld points out, it may only be related to SXSW. Indeed, the 2018 dates for SXSW (March 9-18) coincide with the four flights Delta has scheduled.

B6 BOS-PIT JAN 4>6 FEB 4>5 MAR 5>6

Nice competitive response by B6 on one of their most lucrative routes after DL announced PIT-BOS.

WN BNA-PIT OCT 1.0>1.7

This will be double daily Su-Fr from Oct 8-Nov 3. Oddly enough both PIT-BNA flights leave in the evening (BNA-PIT is more balanced). Hopefully the second flight will be added back in for next spring when the schedule gets extended and hopefully 2x PIT-STL happens soon as well.

The westbound flights are 3/8, 3/9, 3/14, 3/18

I'm not so sure the Frontier schedule change is insignificant. It appears to be a very significant business model change. Perhaps it is an error but there appears to be major changes in the works. My guess is this is only the beginning. If one looks closely, there are market increases and decreases in October.

Just because DL loaded after Norwegian doesn't mean they weren't intended to launch this. It's 4x flights during a major event, hardly a reaction to Norwegian regardless.

I think you may be right. If you read some of the comments on their social media pages there are numerous complaints about schedule changes for October. Many people getting re-accommodated with significantly different itineraries. Some examples are 4 day vacations changing to 2 days based on the non daily schedules now. Anyway, if this is just a mistake seems like that would be an even bigger mess for them.

It's not being compared to what was operated last year, it's reflecting an adjustment to what was already loaded in the schedule for these months. DL had 2 daily flights loaded in the schedule for this winter, and is now going to less than daily for the second flight.

Many of the changes flagged in the report involve additions by F9 during the month of October. Combined with the fact that the schedule has not been loaded past Nov 1, I could see this either way being and error or not.

PDX-PHX on Frontier ends August 13th. The PDX-CLE flight seasonally ends on Oct 4th now.

I think F9 originally filed an overly aggressive October schedule. Using CLE as an example, even with all the early trims to seasonal routes in October, this years F9 capacity at CLE is still up about 10% over last October.

B6 JFK-LAX JAN 9>11 MAR 10>11

They can certainly add even more frequency to this route. By far their most profitable route. AA has 13 daily flights, so that's probably the max they will get up to, but they can always add EWR-LAX.

B6 went to 4 a day back when DL made the announcement. UA made much larger splash on this route. Can't get those mint fast enough. It looks like adding mint to Seattle is taking a back seat to existing routes. Next on the docket are probably adding more on JFK-SFO and FLL-LAX.

not a great time to do it on this route when delta is adding pressure. I think Delta will be making a play in AUS.

Thanks as always, enilria!

Regarding Frontier it does seem more like a pretty big adjustment. There are more than a few routes which appear unchanged for October (it's not like *all* markets got hacked off in a scheduled reversion), so I do think these are probably real.

Among the changes are new markets and some flight increases, nearly all to warm destinations.

New
Orlando to ATL, MSP
Miami to ATL, ORD, PHL
Tampa to ORD
Philadelphia to RSW, SJU
Salt Lake City to LAS

increased frequency
Orlando to ISP, CVG, PHL
Denver to ORD, DFW, PHX

Reduced from Daily to 3 or 4 per week
Denver to BNA, CVG, CLE, CMH, DSM, IND, MEM, MKE, SAT
Phoenix to CVG, ORD
Atlanta to TTN

Dropped markets
Denver to BIS, BZN, GSO, MSO, PIT, RDU, RSW ,TYS
Cleveland to IAH, LAX, MSP, PDX, RDU, SAN, SEA, SFO,
Cincinnati to ATL, FLL, IAH, LAS, MSP, SAN, SFO
Philadelphia to AUS, BNA, IAH, RDU
Las Vegas to CID, DSM, PIT
Trenton to DTW, FLL, RDU
Atlanta to IAH
Colorado Springs to ORD
Phoenix to DTW

It's worth noting that:
--Many of the dropped city pairs were less than daily, especially at CLE, CVG and PHL
--Most of the new routes and added-frequencies are daily, so it's hard know how much of a net change to total flying there is
--More than a few of the market cuts were city pairs announced as seasonal or which could reasonably be viewed as seasonal, though Frontier is pretty pragmatic about seasonal routes -- plenty come back the following year and plenty do not.
--The current schedule window is only through November 1st. So there will undoubtedly be more warm-weather flying added as 2018 schedules are added.

JFK-LAX is by far B6's most lucrative market. 11x is impressive, but may not even be enough. These flights are regularly running at 95% LF's with the Mint cabin sold out days in advance.

BOS-SFO went up to 4x just yesterday, and 5x by next March is impressive - especially given how much capacity has been added to this market over the past few months. Let's see if it sticks.

I agree that SEA is probably taking a back seat to more frequencies on existing routes. 7x on JFK-SFO and 3x on FLL-LAX (and perhaps FLL-SFO) would probably be more profitable deployment of Mint aircraft.

Seems like interim changes are becoming more common on WN. Interesting that it is more of a shuffle than simply reducing across the board.

Nice to see WN keeping the second MSY-FLL even as NK has gone 2x daily and B6 entered the market in the past year. 4 daily MDW-MSY is surely unexpected as it hasn't had more than 3 in recent memory. Would be nice to see a return of MSY-MKE instead.

For the love of god, if Alaska doesn't start this route ASAP, I'm going to vomit.

Very bad timing for AS with all of their QX crew staffing issues. Would have to be mainline and they'd better jump asap.

Nah, SkyWest could do it. 2 or 3 daily 175's would be perfect. I would be shocked if AS doesn't add this route after F9's withdrawal from the market.

We don't really know if F9 is withdrawing from the market yet, do we? They aren't selling anything past Nov 1 last time I checked - which is pretty bizarre itself.

Looks to me like WN is moving back towards its short-haul roots. It makes sense. Routes like AUS-SEA or MKE-SFO take up 9 hours of aircraft time roundtrip; in that same time they can fly 2 rts FLL-MSY. The higher fares on the longer routes are not high enough to justify the block time they are sucking up...

This is confusing because Delta never operated this flight more than once daily in the winter months.

It's not being compared to what was operated last year, it's reflecting an adjustment to what was already loaded in the schedule for these months. DL had 2 daily flights loaded in the schedule for this winter, and is now going to less than daily for the second flight.

So it's basically just a continuation of the 10 Weekly flights no surprise really

B6 reaction to DL's recent entry into BOS-SFO and announcement of BOS-PIT. Pretty aggressive.

Thanks as always enilria!

Thanks. My thoughts exactly.

How does DL expect to be competitive on BOS-SFO with 2 flights when B6 will now have 5 and UA will have 6-7?

I would think the return of scheduled service into Inyokern, CA (IYK) by anyone would deserve an *. More sso than already known WN MKE-SFO/SAN elimination.

Frequency isn't the only competitive vector, especially on flights of some duration. This will test their commitment to growing BOS, however.

This means they were selling 14 weekly until this week. They have now canceled the extra flights, so it's not an amazing change, but flights that they sold tickets on no longer exist and those with tickets have to be rebooked or refunded.

Doesn't seem like much of a net change, but perhaps shorter vs longer segments played a role.

Even as a ULCC, they don't seem to be very patient. They drop routes quickly, before they'd had a chance to mature. Sooner or later, all their planes will be painted yellow.

Agreed, they added more flights than they cut (albeit shorter flights). Didn't understand enrila's "must be shorter on planes than they thought comment".

Actually if you look at the details I think enilria is right on the fewer-planes-than-they-originally-scheduled-for issue.

In the heart of the new September schedule it's mostly cuts -- the only addition is a MSY-FLL flight. The net reduction in flying per weekday is 34.25 hours of block time, not counting turn time between flights also saved by not operating those flights.

In the new October schedule the other additions listed do start, but the weekday block hour reduction is still 8.58 hours. Yet even that understates the cuts because some of those added flights appear to be "utilization" flying, not reallocation of capacity cut elsewhere. For example the additional BNA-PIT-BNA flight runs late into the evening -- the new PIT-BNA flight leaves at 10:05pm. Both Ontario additions (SJC and SMF) appear to be restoring a planned October frequency cut, but with this new October schedules these markets start flying earlier in the day and/or later into the night. If you remove those three adds the net weekday block time reduction is 16.42 hours per day.

My guess is that there are various other "utilization" adjustments made here and there to avoid more cuts than what they ended up making. Hard to know exactly how many fewer lines of flying they are running in the adjusted September and October schedules, but that does seem to be what's taking place. These adjustments are a decided cut to flying.

Fair enough, the adds are all in October. Then again, September is generally the weakest month for airlines, so it could be just capacity adjustments and not simply aircraft shortage. We've WN do more changes intermittently, so its hard to really peg why now.

The DY CDG-EWR flight is actually a moving of a flight that was to go to JFK. I do wonder if Air France might resurrect AF18/19 under the Boost brand when it starts.

Also, B6 might be beating everyone else on JFK to LAX basically turning that into a shuttle every 2 hours.
