Delta A321 Tail Strike ATL

Tue Jul 11, 2017 6:09 am

Didn't see this posted, but there was a tail strike on a Delta A321 about two weeks ago landing in ATL. Registration is N315DN, so the bird is only about six months old. It says there was substantial damage to the aircraft. Anyone at Delta have more details and how long it will take to get it repaired?

I heard it should be back in service by the end of the month. Probably just a few stringer repairs with some new skin.

Envelope protection does not replace proper pilot skill. Wind shear does not discriminate or care about envelope protection.

Exactly right. All planes can have tail strikes and longer planes are more susceptible to them. It does not mean that the frame is at fault. A lot is down to circumstances...

I read in another thread that someone thought that airlines should operate A320s to address inexperience pilots because the envelope protections would help make up for "poorly trained pilots". I was dumbfounded to see that someone thought that. Circumstances happen and even an airline like Delta with one of the most robust training departments in the world still has issues like this one. A month out of service for a tail strike is pretty bad, but circumstances happen. ATL can certainly have adverse weather conditions. Wind shear can hit any plane.

Wonder if the pilot lost his/her job over something like this? I'm sure it wasn't a pleasant conversation with their boss.

Doubt that there would be any punitive time off given, assuming everything else was in compliance. Delta does not operate a flight department with that unhealthy aura running around from within. The FAA on the other hand may apply something beyond the normal review. Certainly a sim check would be waiting, followed up by a line observation.

Are you happy now?

So we know it had nothing to do with weather or faulty equipment so a sim session should cure all, kool.

One thing we always know is that as the captain must sign the flight release documents and he is ultimately in charge of the computer he is
always responsible.
