OAG Changes 7/9/2017: AS/DL/NK/UA

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

These are (most of) the first UA* markets getting Air Wisconsin (ZW) flying later this year. Perhaps these are a filing errors which come back in a week or two, or if these are durable changes maybe the aircraft transition schedule from AA* to UA* has slowed a bit.

Good to see DTW is holding it's own for RJ. I would think the electronics ban has something to do with these reductions.

Shocked to see IAD-DUB being dropped. Also, I find it interesting how TPA-LAX can only sustain around 1 daily flight. DL operates two daily flights on certain days, I know, but when AA entered the market it failed miserably.

Anyways, just some observational comments, not factual.

Yep, looks like the report isn't picking up ZW. They show up on UA.com and on all GDS right now (as ZW so GDS is up to date) so no filing issue.

This route is changing from 1x CR9 a day to 1x CR9 2x CRJ, from what I can see in the DL schedules. Also, as of now, it seems that the 4x daily operation to LGA is still intact in March with 3x CR9 1x CRJ. If this remains true (and they don't cut any DTW flights), this is actually a decent capacity bump for PWM.

I'm really glad to see the return of PWM-JFK. The LGA only operation made getting to Europe from pretty annoying, forcing one to either backtrack through DTW or ATL, or change airports in NYC.

Doing a google search this one makes no sense from what I see. LF is FlyNordic which is listed as defunct.

Or drive 90 minutes from PWM to BOS for a decent selection of non-stops to Europe on Delta partners - a comparable DL TATL destination set as one gets from DTW.

Surprising that isn't better
*NK DEN-SAN SEP 1.0>0.2 OCT 1.0>0

This route became 'seasonal' last year, along with several other SAN-routes, and it appears to again be leaving for the winter this year. However, in 2016, routes weren't discontinued until mid-November so at least SAN-DEN looks to have been moved earlier for winter recess. It's not a huge loss as NK is the 4th cx in the SAN-DEN market and I'm sure makes little impact over-all.

I assume the other 'newly seasonal' routes, SAN-DFW, SJD & BWI will also be removed for the winter at some point late this year. We'll see.

BTW Enilria, I haven't thanked you recently but please know that these Sunday morning reports are very much appreciated by me!

Looks like a seasonal adjustment to me - service is dropped in February, yes, but returns in March.

Agreed, and I don't see some of these reflected on the website either. though I do see ZW flying some of the trips.

Then it wasn't filed when the data was captured. If it was in the database at that point it would be here.

Something is fishy about that given seasonality. Either another shoe will drop or there is a subsidy involved.

I've always been surprised SAN is not more of a Winter market. Not that it isn't a Winter market, but I'd think it would be like a TPA/RSW for the West.

It's still pretty cold in Savannah and Hilton Head during winter. Spring and summer are peak for the area. But that's still a pretty sharp cut from IAD.

Thanks Enilria as awlays!

It will be interesting to see if there are any more schedule adjustments on this route. Reason being:

Prior to the AS addition:
DL- DTW-PDX evening flight, followed by PDX-DTW red-eye return.

For September 2017 (with AS addition and DL response)
DL- DTW-PDX evening flight, followed by PDX-DTW red-eye return. (original schedule)
AS- PDX-DTW red-eye flight, followed by DTW-PDX early morning return. (new addition)
DL DTW-PDX morning flight, followed by PDX-DTW afternoon return. (new AS response)

For October 2017 onward (DL drops their original scheduled times, keeps new response times)
AS- PDX-DTW red-eye flight, followed by DTW-PDX early morning return. (new addition)
DL DTW-PDX morning flight, followed by PDX-DTW afternoon return. (new AS response)

What I find interesting is that:
1) DL will have the upper hand with the flight schedule that better aligns with most business travelers going forward, so it will be interesting to see if there are any schedule changes from the AS side.
2) The DL redeye PDX-DTW always seemed like a metal utilization flight, so I find it curious that the redeye flight was dropped.

I'll readily admit I'm not sure how to read this thread. But last month it seemed to indicate IAD-DUB was increasing for Nov / Dec & wasn't being dropped for Jan / Feb unlike in recent years. Now that seems to be the case again?

Anyone know what airline this is?

That should be Contour Aviation (formerly Corporate Flight Management).
I normally use this in such cases: http://www.iata.org/publications/Pages/code-search.aspx

Looks like it's Contour Airlines. I found this from May:

Macon airline service to be announced this coming week, and I'm assuming tomorrow. 13 WMAZ in Macon hasn't gotten word of it yet it looks like.

Another article that insists the MCN airline service on Contour will be to IAD.... which looks incorrect.

Doing a google search this one makes no sense from what I see. LF is FlyNordic which is listed as defunct.

It appears to be some unnamed charter airline.

Macon is one of those airports in an endless cycle where it probably could support service if it was given a true chance yet nobody has wanted to do so.

Southern Airways ditched IAD for BWI due to increased fees. Maybe Contour originally pegged IAD, but BWI gave them a better deal.

Looks like AS is handing over daily SFO-PVR service to VX and will only fly on weekends to allow twice-daily Fri-Sun..

Yep, that's what IATA.org says. Another listing below shows OOO 'Artran'

the cut to IAD-SAV in the off-season is probably because they're trying to get mainline to stick on SAV-EWR/ORD during the off-season, something they didn't do last winter.

I remembered that Southern Airways never flew to BWI from CSG. All I know of that Southern flew Columbus, GA to IAD nonstop DC-9-10.

Yes this is Iliamna air taxi. This is existing service. ILI is Iliamna. They run a mixture of charter and scheduled flights. Maybe this switched to scheduled?

A maker of vegetable juice. ;)

I did a google search and it appears to belong to Iliamna Air Taxi. They're a tiny carrier in Alaska.

Regarding the upping of PWM-JFK, I'd hazard a guess that the CRJ serving LGA will be cut, leaving 3x CR9 to LGA and 1x CR9 + 2x CRJ to JFK. That extra slot could then be used to increase recently added BGR or YOW to LGA to 2x. AC shifted YOW-LGA to EWR, leaving DL at 1x CR9 as the only LGA service at YOW. From a biz pax perspective, it would make a whole lot of sense for DL to add 1700-1800 YOW departure to better cater to biz pax.

Q

Two different operators. Southern Airways Express is one switching to BWI from IAD with their Caravans.

It's already been established up-thread that there is no cut to the market.
