Was PAS 17 rather disappointing?

Wed Jun 21, 2017 3:50 pm

No B777X, A35X or A321LR orders, and very few widebody orders as a whole.

Myth that Airbus holds up orders for Paris Air Show also busted, though it might be true for Boeing...

What are your views?

Disappointing for Bombardier and especially Embraer probably, Boeing isn't disappointed and probably would have enjoyed some 777 orders, who knows maybe something happens tomorrow. But Airbus could be satisfied but not thrilled about their orders.

I doubt Boeing is disappointed.

I personally am a little surprised by Airbus thus far. I was expecting more from them, as they had to know the -10 was coming, had to have a good indication of what orders it was getting, so I was expecting them to have a counter order salvo lined up. But maybe they will pull a last minute rabbit out of their hat.

It's not over yet, so it's hard to be disappointed in something that isn't yet complete. Perhaps this thread is a bit premature?

Bombardier have to be happy. They got enough good news out of it to be able to justify to lenders why they should continue lending to them although C-series orders seem to be so hard to win.
Boeing may be happy with 737 sales but trends for widebodies are not good for either them or Airbus.

Day 3 i.e. today was pretty much bald, and I don't really have much hope from tommorow....

PAR2017 is not finished yet!

It's an air show, not an Olympic race with winner medals for most sales!

So much focus on orders, and "who won", with little/no focus on the general atmosphere of the show. We have threads for "Airbus orders", "Boeing orders", and "Other OEM Orders". It is IMHO very telling that there is no PAR2017 news thread, that ignores the football league frenzy of who sold more planes (or announced the sales) in the last 3 days

Can anyone provide me an update on what is the current industry consensus emerging from PAR2017 on any active topics in civil aviation? Did anyone discuss anything other than orders? Were there any flying displays? What is the point of airshows if it's just a moment to mark some order fest?

It was an important show for Boeing with the strong launch of the 737-10. I believe it shows the A321's strongest selling point was it's capacity and now Boeing has something competitive in that area. The 737-10 has blunted the defections of MAX customers to the A321 which denies Airbus the opportunity to put their product into those customer's fleets and use it as leverage for future orders as well as depressing the Average Sales Price for the A321 on future RFPs as Airbus no longer has a functional monopoly on the 200+ seat market.

Neither Airbus nor Boeing can dictate to their customers when they announce their orders. The Paris and Farnborough Air Shows are when the world's media - not just aviation media - are interested in aviation reporting so for many customers, this is the best coverage they will get all year. It's the same for the OEMs, so if they are going to launch a new family (A350) or model within a family (787-10 / 737-10), they will want to do so at an Air Show if they have enough orders in hand to make a splash.

JL noted today that while Airbus would have additional orders to announce, they would be for small numbers of frames.

Maybe the demand for new aircraft is drying up? *gasp*

To be honest orders are the big focus of this show, as neither Airbus nor Boeing have an all new jet in development like the A350 or 787 to give updated progress/timelines on. Boeing launched/gave details on the 737-10 and talked a teeny bit about the 797/MoM, and Airbus announced the A380plus development study. Both have been discussed quite a bit on here, generally as continuations of preexisting threads with the updated information.

This was announced at/for the show. claim of 4% reduction. Don't believe it will be that but it has to save money.

I'm still hoping the MoM gets launched.

Not disappointing at all. Great week for Boeing and very happy for them.
