'Dreamtime' would be an excellent choice for a special 'dreaming' livery.

'Skippy'? Really? Don't get me wrong, I grew up and loved watching Skippy as a child, but does it resonate with Millennials? 'Waltzing Matilda' is a little iffy too in my view.

The rest are okay. I think my problem with the list is that there is no theme to the names. It's like Qantas' marketing people just came up with a list of random Australiana plonked them on aircraft. I preferred Qantas' previous regime of using themes. My favourite were the 737-300 inspirational names, and the 737-400 bird names.

Happy to hear of the final choices. I'm glad no Australian people were chosen as there are still 8 people who were supposed to get an A380 named after them who appear to be out of luck. It was always a bad move assigning names for these before they arrived, even if they expected to exercise the options.

I like the names - Aussie's know what all of those things are, so I'm happy. Would have loved to have seen the breakdown in the voting!

Qantas ran a competition and asked the public to put forward their 8 names after Australian icons. The most popular ones suggested were short listed and out to a vote by the public

Unfortunately, "Waltzing Matilda" just brings a wobble board toting, bearded & convicted nonce to mind in this part of the world.
Could be a slight own goal.

Skippy...? Really? Love it, typical great Aussie sense of humour. Couldn't image BA calling one of their planes Noddy or something. At least its not Kylie, Joe Mangel or Dame Edna.... But where's Crocodile Dundee? Bit of mixed bag of themes. But Waltzing Matilda's ok and I think a good choice. I don't associate that song with R.H.
Didgeridoo and Advance Australia Fair would have got my vote.
Im surprised in a way the traditional names Sydney Melbourne Brisbane wevent recycled as didon't they disapper with the retirement of the early 744s?

But fair play to Qantas the names are certainly a talking point and make a change to the usual ones.

Hey guys,
Some interesting choices....
The OCD in me hates the lack of a coherent theme.
Uluru, GBR, waltzing Matilda and GSL are cool. Quokka, Dreamtime and Boomerang okayretro . Skippy however? retro yes!
At least we didn't end up with Pavlova, Kylie or Priscila....
Reminds me of that British Antarctic ship ship named 'McBoaty' or whatever.....

There is a strong, coherent theme - Australiana.

Blessedly, Qantas seems to have avoid the snobbery that stopped "Once a Jolly Swagman" becoming the national anthem - and gave us the wretched "Advance Australia Fair" which no one can sing - instead.

This list seems to be beautifully chosen, a balance across the societal spectrum.

As a point of order , if they had chosen "Pavlova" there would likely have been a war with New Zealand.

I like the name Dreamtime. Very fitting for a Dreamliner. It reminds me of Scoot's first 787, named 'Dream Start'...

Can't say I'm too fond of the other names; that's what happens when you listen to the public ;)

In the current Aussie thread I listed my choices as follows: Boomerang. Dreamtime, Skippy (this was a must), Waltzing Matilda, Uluru, Great Barrier Reef, Kookaburra and Great Ocean Road. So I am very very happy to get six out of eight. I sure hope Kookaburra and GOR get chosen at a later time. Great Southern Land and Quokka deserve their choice. I really am so proud to be an Aussie, including being a Western Bulldogs supporter of nearly 70 years vintage. cheers all

1. naming an Australia aircraft after a desert invented in New Zealand would be incredibly stupid, even for an Australian.

2. They never named her Boaty McBoatface she is called RRS Sir David Attenborough.

Just the two A333s so far IIRC.

The A380s will be repainted at the same time as heavy maintenance/reconfigurations starting 2018. No idea what the timeline is for the rest of the fleet but they are really dragging their heels so far...

Was a fun initiative getting the OZ public involved. 7 of my suggestions made the cut. :D It's a 'feel good' thing. Humans being humans, love to 'take credit' for things. People will love to see 'their' aircraft. Of course, as in everything in life, you can't please everyone! That's the nature of the 'social media beast' But I guarantee (and is already happening), that search engines worldwide are 'searching' what some/all the 'names' refer to, as well as searching AUSTRALIA and QANTAS. Brilliant marketing in my humble opinion. :chat:

Likewise. Never seen nor heard of one. I suspect more Aussies have heard of Blinky Bill!

Anyway, IMHO Dreamtime stands out as the best name by far.

Sorry if I missed it, but has the order in which the names will be applied to delivered aircraft reg #s been determined yet?
