Delta 767-300 Last Flight Date?

Sat Jun 17, 2017 12:38 am

So far Delta only has 3 Boeing 767-300s in its fleet. (I'm talking about the non-ER version with no lie-flat seats). They seem very close to retirement and are in their final days of service. Does anybody happen to know the set date for them to be phased out? I remember American retired their 767-200ERs in May 2014 but as far as I know there was no heads up for it.

Not sure about the retirement date for these birds but I do wonder what equipment DL will use for SLC-HNL once they go away. The 757 seems too small and just barely has the legs for SLC-Hawaii (DL used the 757 on SLC-OGG before it was dropped and the route sometimes took payload penalties), and the 767's with lie flat Delta One seats seem to "premium" for such a route.

I could totally see Delta using their Ex-TWA 757s (The ones with the upgraded cabins with lie-flat seats) on this route. It's only 6 hours and 45 minutes at its longest. When Delta used to do PSA-JFK on the Ex-TW Birds it could be up to 9 hours and 30 minutes, which I think is the longest Boeing 757-200 flight to ever exist correct me if I'm wrong. Currently with the longest scheduled 757 flight is on Delta from ARN-JFK using the Ex-TW Birds which clocks in at 8 hours and 40 minutes.

After doing some checking on Delta's website, effective November 5, 2017 this route will drop using the Boeing 767-300 and will be replaced with an Airbus A330-300.

The final two 767-3 will be retired after the super bowl next January.

DL has operated a 763ER LAX/HNL for several years to bridge its pacific services. If the 333 is too much aircraft for year-round SLC/HNL, DL could warily flip the 763ER ATL-SLC-HNL, in lieu of the 333.

Don't forget, SLC is hot and high which is why the 752 sometimes took payload penalties to OGG. Anyways, good to know that the 333 will be used going forward. Big jump in capacity!

Hey guys. I did some more research yesterday on Delta's website to find out the retirement dates. Turns out they are really pushing these guys closer to death and moved up the months all the way to the end of October. It was a whole lot different from what I researched 2 days ago, but here is the retirement dates for the final 3 763s.

1. DL2767 SLC-HNL October 28th, 2017
(Replacement Aircraft is a A333 the following day)

2. DL2906 ATL-SLC October 28th, 2017
(Replacement Aircraft is a A333 the following day)

3. DL39 ATL-SEA October 29th, 2017
(Replacement Aircraft is a B752 the following day)

I hope this information helps. I hope it won't change again soon. But given the fact the new 737-900ER and the A321-200 are coming. I think they are forcing these guys to die earlier than expected.

I'm pretty sure that DL is planning to convert a few of the 763ERs to a domestic configuration, similar to the current 763s.

My first ride on a 763 was SLC to DEN years back. That is the way to travel on a short flight! ( The whole routing was cool, flew PHX-SLC-DEN-SLC-PHX in addition to the 763, a CR2 when it was brand new with that new jet smell, a Western 733 and DL 727)

SLC-Hawaii seems like a great fleet utilization for the A330.

Flew on N140LL two weeks ago SAN-ATL. Makes me really glad I got a ride on a non-er 767-300!

It probably wouldn't be worth it, but I wonder whether a more coach heavy configuration of the 330 will ever be used for routes like Hawaii and perhaps some intl routes that don't command a big premium yield, such as MNL.

Delta did fly ATL-BSB clocking in at 4170 miles on the 757 for a while compared to JFK-PSA at 4131 miles. CVG-AMS was also a 757 route that came in at 4142 miles. Not sure how winds affected ATL-BSB but CVG-AMS was also TATL and possibly longest blocked schedule.

Delta has used the 330 on SLC-HNL in the winter and early spring months this year so I certainly see it possible moving forward. DL1105 in cold months was a 330 ATL-SLC-HNL but interestingly the aircraft for ATL-SLC was different than the one SLC-HNL.

I'm not sure that's still the plan...I haven't seen anything internal on ship #'s or dates for service pulldown for reconfiguration. It's been a year or so since DL communicated the plan to take a few off INTL.

There have been much internal rumors and speculation but anything credible/reasonable is now at least 1-2 years old.
That said, in that time they've decided to modify/refurbish additional 757s, order more A321s, and there is softness in TATL.

My guess is that there is nothing tangible until the A330-900s start to arrive and if there are 763s that still have economic life left at that point.

Hopefully that's the case as opposed to seeing these 76P routes replaced with three 739s each because some business traveler can't afford to wait an extra hour for the typical departure time  .

Surprisingly, the 767-300's range is (close enough to) the same as the 757-200W (although I was only able to get that info from Wikipedia...)

Bummer, assuming that means a much lower MTOW, wouldn't that make these new 767ERs "too much aircraft" for certain routes as opposed to their non-ER counterparts? (not that DL does ATL-MCO on a widebody anymore and they did it anyways with MD11s in the past).

That's strange but cool. When I did research for the past two days they changed the schedule twice. Originally they were gonna retire them on November 4th and December 20th, then the next day they moved the dates up to the end of October. It's good they are using them for charters before they retire them into beer cans, but once the date pass they will possibly keep them in storage until the Super Bowl. I'll keep a lookout for the changes, thanks for the heads-up! ;)

As of right now, 1404 will retire on 10/16/17 and 1401/2 will go to charters on 1/1/18 and retire 2/28/18. Noteworthy addition, 1501 will retire 11/1/17 and 1503 will retire on 1/15/18. Of course, everything is subject to change.

Now this is interesting. With no new A330s coming in until the NEOs in 2019, it basically means a trickle down whereby newly delivered A359s will replace A330s on some routes and A330s will then replace B763s on some routes. That is of course, unless DL cancels certain routes operated by the 763s such as NRT-PVG which going the wayside to make way for ATL-PVG.

I think the best thing about Delta using the A330-300 as the replacement is that you can finally have lie-flat seats on domestic routes, 32 extra seats, 2 more lavatories, and the plane flies at a speed of 531mph, which is 14mph faster. Which might not make a difference, but hey at least you got yourself a new plane that isn't even a decade old yet..... Well some are about to be not that it matters... :|

Why not equip some A321s with Delta One seats? Then they could be used in conjunction with the Delta One 757s on certain domestic services. BTW, any retirement dates set for 1502, 1504, 1505, and 1506 (the other four ex-GF frames)? 1521 (the CO reject) is also like them.

Wish there was more demand for domestic widebody flying. I know UA has some 777's set aside for the purpose but it seems like frequency is trumping capacity, whether that's good, bad, or in between.

Delta does use some widebodies for Domestic Routes. Mostly the 777-200LR, A330-200/300, and 767-400ER.

If UA can run 757s from DEN to HNL, LIH, OGG, and KOA then DL can use a 757 from SLC. As several people have already pointed out, the SLC-HNL route is going to an A330 once the non-ER 763s are gone.

Does anyone know the A330 routing to get it to SLC? Will it come from the LHR, CDG, or other city?

Can't speak to flight time, as that's such a relative and malleable measurement. But distance-wise, it certainly isn't.

MX's CUN-EZE remains the longest ever scheduled 752 flight.

It would probably rotate out with in HNL with a routing like ATL-HNL-SLC-HNL-ATL routing. MSP service was routed like that.

Not sure why DL couldn't operate SLC-Hawaii if UA can with the same aircraft. As for SLC-HNL specifically, I'm pretty sure the route is going to the 333.

I'm excited to have the A333 back on the SLC-HNL route. We did this flight last year for new years - bought early enough to get $1500 tickets in Delta One for the new year's holiday. A bargain, and excellent service up front. The entire cabin was sold out well before the date of departure, no upgrades were given, and I know that tickets jumped to over $3,000 right after we purchased our tickets as other friends that came with us ended up in coach.

I wonder about ATL-ANC when the 763s are gone. I understand winds aloft can make that flight often take a payload hit.

A dummy booking for June 2018 on Delta's website shows this flight is scheduled to be operated by a 752. In fact, it's being operated by a 752 now. Flightaware shows since yesterday it's been operated by a 752 instead of a 763.

Lol :D :D
TSN : Time Since New
YOM : Year Of Manufacture.

YOM :
N140LL: 1993
N1402A: 1993
N144DA: 1999

Basically yes, i'm curious to know the information of cycles and hours of each frame if someone has the info?

Frame: Hours/Cycles (recent, not exact)
N140LL: 79762/29047
N1402A: 79867/29123
N144DA: 61287/20092

Thank you for the quick feedback.
Interesting numbers, domestic indeed.
Anyone knows what's gonna be the future of those frames once they will be removed from the DL Fleet?

UA uses the 752 DEN-KOA/OGG/LIH and back with no issues. Currently they are flown with RR powered 752 but they used to operate with the PW powered 752s. Not sure why DL couldn't operate SLC-Hawaii if UA can with the same aircraft. As for SLC-HNL specifically, I'm pretty sure the route is going to the 333.

I guess you didn't read the entire thread before posting...

You are correct. I didn't read through 36 posts minutes before going to bed. It looks like we both arrived at the same conclusion. Great minds....

Unless of course you mean to imply that only one person can come to a conclusion and post about it?

Hello! I know this thread wasn't active in a few months, but I wanted to give an update as well as an analysis on the last 2 763s Delta has in their fleet. As others stated, it seems like the frames will most likely leave around Q3 of this year. Here are the stats and analysis:

N140LL is the oldest of the 2. Its MSN is 25988 and it's first flight completed on 6/2/1993. The frame is 24.9 years of age and is powered by 2 PW4056 engines. It's current flight atm is from SLC-ATL as we speak. Not sure how much miles nor flight hours this baby put in but I'm sure its a ton. If anyone has any info will be greatly appreciated.

N1402A is the youngest (Of course Dispite being old lol). It's MSN is 25989 with its first flight completed in 7/10/1993. The frame is 24.7 years old and is powered by 2 PW4056s. The current flight for this frame atm is SLC-HNL as we speak. Again, I have no info on the miles or flight hours this aircraft has, info for the two will greatly be appreciated.

It's gonna be sad when these last 2 non-ER variants leave the fleet. Of course they have the 300ERs as well as the 400ER variant as well, but next year is gonna be a hellfest since they will have a handful of 300ERs (16 or more I believe) being pulled from service and into the desert until they get torn apart and into cans and other accessories. I hope to get a chance to ride on those 300ERs very soon before they are gone.

Yeah - the 767 was my favorite until AA announced they were giving their 8 14/15 year olds an early retirement, while keeping the older A333's probably past 25. I've given up... :brokenheart:

Over the summer, the 767-300s are scheduled to operate 1x daily ATL-ANC and 2x daily ATL-LAX (as of now, at least).

Both frames have around 80k hours and 29k cycles according to FAA SDR reports.

No rush. You probably have 8-10 years before the last 300ER is gone.

Worst of all, since they announced that huge order of 787s, it's really game over for those aircraft. At least a few of them will get a 2nd life as freighters, but of course not the same. I feel you on that. But as they say, out with the old in with the new. :(

Yep, there are currently 56 300ER in Delta's fleet. And unfortunately no, as DL_Mech posted these frames clocked 80k flight hours and 29k miles (Which I believe for the miles is average). It's game over for these two.

It is good news since Delta pushed back their A339neo aircraft to 2020 (I think). But glad we have quite a few frames sticking around!
