Boeing 747-400 Passenger Fleet Tracking/Retirements Thread

Wed Jun 14, 2017 10:59 pm

As we reach the midway-point of 2017, the Boeing 747-400 continues to gradually disappear from passenger fleets. The idea of this thread is to keep track of the active 747-400 passenger fleet. There are a number of operator-specific threads to discuss those airline's plans in more detail, so this thread isn't intended to take the place of the in depth discussions in those so much as provide a general overview of the the passenger 747-400 fleet.

I've listed below the currently active 747-400 passenger fleet, which numbers 177 aircraft across 27 airlines. I've sourced the fleet data from planespotters.net. For the purposes of this thread, I haven't included cargo aircraft, VIP/government aircraft, or aircraft that are listed as stored.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to fly six of these 747s in just the last two years (two each on Delta, Lufthansa, and El Al). I've never flown in the upper deck, though. My loss.

Wow!! Great list, thank you very much for the time and effort you had to put into this.

1 critique I saw however is you said United's 747's will be gone in September, actual last flight is Oct. 29th ICN-SFO.

Still Kudo's for such a great post

I thought OJS,OJT and OJU were leaving late 2018 or was it 2019? Surprising tbh with QF growing again now. These are 1999/2000 builds.

There are actually more pax 744's in service than I realized.
Love the fact that BA still flies a 744 into my home airport DFW on a regular basis

Planespotters.net has this frame (26403/1095 ex-HL7472) as 5N-DBK, stored since 18/04/17. According to the same source, 5N-HMM is 26409/1170 ex-HL7404.

Yes, I hadn't expected it to be quite as high as this. That said, we are losing this year:
  • Delta x7
  • EVA x2
  • Korean x4
  • Kuwait x1
  • Qantas x2
  • United x16

So assuming these don't find homes elsewhere flying passengers, that's a reduction of 32 aircraft, taking the worldwide fleet down to 145, or even lower if there is a trickle of retirements elsewhere.

An interesting piece of trivia is that FlightGlobal had recorded 197 747-400s in passenger service as of 31 July 2016, while at the same time 193 A380s had been delivered, with the 197th delivered on 25 October 2017 and deliveries now standing at 213, meaning after just under a decade in service, the size of the A380 fleet has surpassed that of the passenger 747-400 fleet.

Excellent thread, yes.

Strange to think that in 5 years all but maybe two or three dozen 744s will be gone, a plane that ruled longhaul travel around the year 2000, and was still the most important longhaul plane worldwide until around 2010. At least 744Fs will keep on flying for at least another 15 years or so.

For me the 744 is the greatest passenger plane ever. I had quite a number of flights with them, on LH, Thai, CX and SAA. Mostly Businessclass flights with LH, but also 1st Class three times, on Thai and SAA. I will miss them like no other plane. I have another 5 or 6 years until LH will remove them so its still time though I am doing much less longhaul travel than in the past.

Few 744s which are being phased out by their original operators these days will find a new home now, and I guess all built before the year 2000 are now in danger to be dismantled once retired.

Why is there an oddball serial number in the UA fleet: N105UA 26473/985 Boeing 747-451? All the others are 747-422. Airfleets said that UA have operated the plane from new - was initially intended for someone else?

Originally destined for NW but not taken up, hence the -451 code.

-_51 was the NW customer code, this frame was built for NW, but NTU, and subsequently taken by UA.

N174UA was just retired today, it just flew SFO-VCV as UA2582. UA's fleet is now down to 15 744s.

Extremely well researched and well done, as are most of your posts, V/F!

[quote="VirginFlyer"So assuming these don't find homes elsewhere flying passengers, that's a reduction of 32 aircraft, taking the worldwide fleet down to 145, or even lower if there is a trickle of retirements elsewhere.[/quote]
I thought the "death knell" of the fleet was to be the fuel tank inerting mods needed after Lockerbie. Is this saying then that these remaining 145 has had the mod work done? Apparently they aren't as fiscally onerous as some suggested?

I was in SIN two days ago. 15-20 years ago the place would be full of 747s. Now the only ones I saw were 3 parked at the cargo terminal. None at the passenger terminal. Sad.

That would be for the US registered planes for certain. The foreign registered birds may not be under the same requirements. Perhaps somebody here with more regulatory knowledge can chime in, but I'm willing to bet most of the non-US registered frames will never have the fuel inerting work done on them.

I thought OJS,OJT and OJU were leaving late 2018 or was it 2019? Surprising tbh with QF growing again now. These are 1999/2000 builds.

I haven't heard OJS/T/U leaving anytime soon but things may change, especially if the 787-9 takes up the BNE-LAX-JFK route as rumoured.

Wow, what a wonderful thread by OP! Keep up the good work!

I only been on board 744 twice: SQ 9V-SMU (1000th 747 produced) and 9V-SPN, swapped in when some of SQ's A380 were grounded due to QF38 incident.

Ironically, Saudia retired all their owned B747-468 and leased in more B747-400 from various lessors. The Queen is a dying breed here in Asia Pacific. Air China remaining two are constraint to spotty domestic run sometimes President use. Thai, Korean Air and Asiana mostly on domestic run occasionally international run.

It's 8 789's replacing 5 744's OJS/T/U should be gone by 2019 according to that, the second 4 789's were brought foward to be delivered by end 2018. However I am a little surprised as QF are growing again and these aircraft will be due D checks this year unless they have enough hours remaining to stretch out a few more months, im guessing these have had the fuel tank upgrades.

Wonderful thread, thanks for all the comprehensive work from everyone involved.

--It was startling to see a Lion Air 747 while in Indonesia in the spring (Jakarta I believe). I had no idea they operated the type.
--I will miss seeing 4 United and 4 Delta 747's waddling around NRT during the afternoon departure rush from the United club as recently as 2 or 3 years ago.
--It is odd seeing an Atlas Air passenger 747.
--Is Corsair still flying the 747 into SXM? They must be the last operator of that type there?
--I'm still not used to the absence of so many Air France and JAL 747s from hubs around the world. Singapore as well.
--I have 32 segments on 744 aircraft and I'm as sad as everyone else to see them go. I call them a big teddybear of a plane.

KLM plans to retire 3 more 747s this year en 2 in 2018, to be replaced with 1x 77W and 4x 787-9. This will leave the number of pax 744 at KL down to just 10 by the end of 2018 :sigh:

Well there is still the 747-8i of course, I hope to board a flight with this bird one day, it's my #1 aircraft I still want to be on. The A346 a close second. Fortunately I did manage to be on an A345 flight a couple of years ago (EK to SEZ). Sorry for drifting OT a bit.

Sorry I'm not adding any value myself but thanks so much for the research it's a truly informative thread.

It will be weird in the inevitable future when there are no QF 747s left, come of my earliest memories are on QF 747-200s

Love the thread, I will be back here several times as retirements go by

I rode a LH 747-400 in 2004 but they eluded me till 2016/2017 I have been very lucky 4 rides on DL 747 including Upper Deck :cloudnine: , 2 on BA 747, and in a couple weeks I get to try 747-8 with Lufthansa

On the US East Coast BA makes it easy to get on a 747-400
LH, Korean and Air China will provide opportunities for 747 for at least another 20 years

What an amazing thread! Congratulations to the OP for doing this great research!

Unfortunately i've never flown on a 747... hope to do it someday, and hope to do it on a 400!
It breaks my heart to see how fast the 747-400 is being retired. Some of these are still young frames but will go to death in the deserts.
China Airlines still have the last 744s built (around 2005) and I really hope they can find a new operator. I don't think Jumbos are being converted to freighter anymore, so this operator will have to be a pax operator. Quite difficult...

-_51 was the NW customer code, this frame was built for NW, but NTU, and subsequently taken by UA.

To be more precise, two B747-451 were built for NW but they did not take delivery. UA took them registered them as N105UA and N106UA. They can easily differentiate from standard B747-422 due to its wings being painted in silver/grey paint. N105UA remains in UA fleet till today, even during its post 9/11 Chapter 11. N106UA fate was opposite. Grounded after UA rejected her lease during Chapter 11, she spent few years being scorched in desert before Blue Skies took her. Blue Skies was a shield company set up for ultimate export to Iran Mahan Air. US government managed to block the deal, she sat few more months grounded in South Korea (was undergoing heavy check then), went to Phuket Air in Thailand for a year. She was flown back to desert, only to be scrapped on the end. She died pretty young compared to other B744s.

Great thread. Over the years have enjoyed 40 rides in the 747-400's of BA, CX, LH, SIA, SAA and MAS

Shortest ride was on 9M-MPB with MAS on the KL-Penang "hop", longest was 9M-MPA KUL-LHR thanks to airspace closures in the middle east and poor weather at LHR, with an airborne time of 15hrs

My favorite 747-400 ride was ZS-SBK "The Great North" of SAA

Added CIVJ to my BA list on the way down to CPT a week ago. Now comprises BNLG, LL, LN, LW, LZ, CIVA, VB, VD, VE, VG, VJ, VK, VN, VO, VP, VY & VW, so about 30% of the original fleet. LG, VA and VN have carried me 3 times each

I would put my money on CPT being the last BA 744 route.

With the Super Hi-J refurbishments, I think JFK is likely to be their final 744 route. Factor in, also, that longer 744 routes will yield greater fuel savings when replaced with A35K's, for example.

My experiences have primarily been heading east on JL, CX, NH, SQ and BA; and a great many of those in the upper deck. Back in the days of LHR-KIX, once I was upgraded to F and experienced a crosswind landing. I was sitting in something like seat 2A and remember looking out of the window on finals pretty much straight down the runway!

Anyway, thanks V/F, great thread.

Could it have been slated to retire, but was put back into service because another 744 went mech? I can't think of any other reason it would have flown to VCV.

UAL SFO-NRT is no longer operated by a 744 as of 2 days ago. Its now on a 77W.

The last routes as of June on the 744 are ICN, PEK, PVG, TPE, FRA and LHR. All out of SFO. From what I hear, TPE is expected to to go 77W in July.

Rumor has it, ICN will be the last B744 flight for UA
