Maybe Dragonair can secure these 772ERs: 9M-MRA, 9M-MRE, 9M-MRN as it seems they have received approval to launch US routes. Seems like a perfect aircraft for a HKG-HNL-PHX or HKG-HNL-LAS routing, after they have been fitted with high density seating for low price bottom feeders and holiday makers, and always on satellite tracking.

While it sounds like a good plan, but I don't think CX or KA would like to complicate their fleet further. Note they are taking five ex-EK B777-300 soon. When CX gets more A350 delivered, they will offload more A333 to KA if needs arise. Those MH cabin product was from 2000s, really mediocre by today's standard even for a holiday destination. TheGeordielad said it well, A333 is good enough for Saipan and Guam. They have some late builds.

I really do hope MH or the Malaysian government keeps Romeo Alpha at least as a gate guardian. Not only can it be a memorial for both MH17/MH370, it can also commemorate the flight it took 20 years ago to capture the longest distance & fastest RTW flight records.

They got approval for us flights to start Guam services. Also they have some decent airbus A330 aircraft.

PPRUNE is speculating Hawaii, but they would for sure have to have some CX hand-me-downs that did the Australian runs to reach Hawaii.

If anything, it'll be Guam. Just because you apply for a right, that doesn't mean you have to use them.

CX is getting the B773s to replace the B772s.
Thank you as well.

Dragonair has stated they have no intentions of flying to the US Mainland or Hawaii at this time; the US authority is intended to be put to use for services to Guam. And even for those hypothetical HNL flights, they have late model A330s, that, in a pinch, KA could get from CX as this one receives more A350s. Those ex MH 777s are old dogs, even their cabins and amenities scream 1990s. Bringing them to today's standards is not even worth it, given their uneconomic performance compared to the A330s.

It's interesting that these 772ERs don't seem to have much of a resale/reuse market outside of the Russian charterers. Is the used 772 now obsolete for new players? Is ANYONE accumulating 772 pax anymore? Outside the mentioned Air Zimbabwe and Russian charters? Just seems kind of unbelievable.

Yes, it is an obsolete technology and no, no one is taking B772 anymore other than Russian charter airlines. Only some SQ's and MH's 772 got picked up, most of other retired birds are either stored and scrapped. Suadia is offloading tons of it, All Nippon Airlines too. With newer technologies like 380, 787, 350, 330neo and upcoming 777X, new jets are being built at unprecedented rate, thus making older jet obsolete faster than expected.

Have a look at production list, the stored/scrapped is getting longer daily: https://www.planespotters.net/productio ... tatus&p=13

The 777-200ER was squeezed on two sides.

The A333 always did well on routes it had the range or more appropriately payload at range. Once the A333 gained 5,700nm of still air range, sales took off and 777-200ER sales stopped. That ended the 777-200ER's role in mid-length missions.

That left the 777-200ER's one mission as the lowest cost per flight long haul. In other words, the few flights where hubbing couldn't fill the added seats of the 777-300ER. The 788 ended that role.

Then the 789 and A359 came out as lower cost per flight replacements. The cost savings on a 789 or A350 justify the replacement of 14+ year old models flying 4,000+nm missions.

On the longest missions, such as Malaysia to Europe, even the youngest 777-200ER in mint condition cannot compete even if given free (6,000+ nm still air range or real world missions iver 5,200nm).

So but the A330 or 787 for shorter missions; but watch out for the A321LR economics in just a few years. Heck, we're seeing the A321NEO (non-LR) on order for replacing A333s!

Nothing left for the small 777 with less efficient engines, missing the raked wingtips, and higher maintenance costs.

Sort of sad. The engines that we're brand new at the start ofy career are about to be scrapped in Volume.

That time-frame also coincides with the 77W entry into service. Boeing had no incentive to make competitive 772ER deals when they had a production line full of higher-price, higher-margin 77Ws.
