UPS & SF Express form China JV

Fri May 26, 2017 6:15 pm

UPS announced plans to form a joint venture agreement with Chinese express delivery firm SF Holdings SF Holdings, parent company of SF Express, is the dominant package delivery company within China with 240,000 employees.

The joint venture, which is subject to Chinese regulatory approval, will initially focus on shipping goods from China to the United States "with planned expansion to markets in the rest of the world."

UPS said it was "optimistic" that regulators would approve the agreement.

UPS has operated in China since 1988 and conducts more than 200 flights to and from its Chinese hubs weekly.

Lets see what FedEx does now in China. Previously it had purchased a couple smaller partners, but it has nothing to rival a UPS-SF venture.

While there are quite a few express delivery companies in China, SF is probably the brand with best brand image... Whenever I want to send things to mainland China I was always recommended by people to use SF..

It's going to take a while to digest TNT...FX probably isn't going to make any kind of Asia response in the near term.

Well with SF aligned with UPS, the next largest options for FedEx would be Alibaba backed YTO Express or STO Express.

Uniquely however both those companies follow a franchise system model that relies on hundreds of smaller partners and unlike SF does not own all their own equipment nor are unified and standardized enterprise.

SF has something like 30 757 & 767 conversions spots lined up, so the fleet will certainly continue to grow.

Also earlier this year they announced they would build a hub in Hubei province to link 34 cities into a central sorting operation.

UPS already has an alliance with Alibaba.

China regulator OKs joint venture between UPS and SF Holding

The venture will combine SF’s 13,000 service points in 331 cities in China with UPS’ global network spanning 220 countries.

“UPS has an aggressive multi-year growth plan in China,” Ross McCullough, president of UPS’ Asia Pacific unit, said in the statement. “Aligning our two networks will increase our market presence by connecting China’s consumers and manufacturers to the U.S. and around the world.”

SF Holdings, parent company of SF Express, is often called China’s answer to UPS rival FedEx Corp (FDX.N), and is the dominant package delivery company within China. It also delivers to more than a dozen countries, including the United States and Japan.

Somewhat related, SF Express will be building a cargo only airport near Wuhan designed to be the biggest air freight hub in Asia.

I would expect UPS to operate several flights here eventually; the pilots scope clause has stipulations requiring flights in to the US be flown by UPS when volume reaches a certain level.
