Pax Jumps Off Plane Waiting To Taxi At CLT

Fri May 26, 2017 4:20 pm

Good thing it wasn't one of AA's A330s. I guess he must have had some kind of mental breakdown...

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/l ... 96914.html

Article quote:

"Nothing seemed out of order when the flight backed away from its gate and was waiting for the OK to begin heading toward the runway for takeoff to New Bern. All the passengers were seated, and the seatbelt signs were on. That’s when a man, identified as Sein, got out of his seat and tried to open the main door to the aircraft, federal documents say. A flight attendant interceded. So did two passengers. Sein, however, tried to bite the attendant’s hand, then made his way to the galley. There, he pried open the door, and jumped."

How will the news spin this as the airline's fault?

That seems a bit overly cynical. The news certainly hasn't been kind to the airlines lately, but in most cases it was certainly the airline at fault. This would be pretty difficult to even suggest at being the airline's fault.

I'm sure the media will find a way to shed a negative light on the airline. Clearly the media is swarming to any thing out of the ordinary that happens with the airlines like bees to honey.

This was a PSA CRJ-200.

I'm mystified why the article would be referring to sky marshals -- pretty sure there weren't sky marshals on this 50-seat jet.

Air marshalls are everywhere......that's the point you never know where they are.

IMO, AA won't get dissed for this. It is a crime for a passenger to attempt to open a door. The article is vague, but doesn't imply any wrongdoing by AA.

Let's be honest here: who among us hasn't been tempted to try and find a faster way off a CRJ-200? :silly:

Doesn't the CRJ-200 door swing downwards with the airstairs built in? In which case it isn't too much of a jump. It sounds like the plane was stopped at the time and not taxing.

The situation was made worse by the absence of a seinlanguage interpreter.

Well, The passenger was out of his place, clearly should not have done that. He does deserve jail time and. air Marshall's are randomly assigned to flights. I wonder what the flight crew, cabin crew and passengers did after he jumped.

Also Bombardier CRJ's are good planes. CRJ700LR is the best though :P

It's not entirely clear which door he exited through, but the article says he tried to open the "main door" but the flight attendant stopped him, then he "made his way to the galley". So I'm assuming he exited through the door on the right hand side of the plane through the galley, which wouldn't have stairs.

And I'm not sure if all CRJ-200s have stairs or if they're optional. And if they're optional I have no idea whether PSA has them or not.

I'm pretty sure they are standard on the CRJ-200. That said you are right I forgot about the service door. Granted it is probably only an ~6-7' drop. I wouldn't expect a 22 year old that looks like he is in good/normal physical condition to break his leg/ankle from the drop unless he has a really bad landing, especially if he dropped down to the floor before exiting instead of leaping from standing.

On second thought, I'd guess that the chutes on the hypothetical A330 from my op would already have been armed (I guess that's what happens?) because they were about to taxi. Though, I suppose he could have bounced off the slide and hit the tarmac due to the frenzied state.

This guy is yet another forgotten example of the long passes Cola Wars. I never would forget the days spent locked in a room forced to drink Pepsi as a Coca Cola loyalist. They were dark times.

He's lucky it was a CRJ period. Any other plane he would've broken his legs, became paralyzed, or died. Even the Emb-145s don't have slides, and even though it's a 5 foot drop, unless he was a paratrooper that knew how to fall he would've hurt himself. If it was a prop job, we all know what would happen there...

Land wrong and it could be. I took an E145 flight yesterday and sat in 1A. Looked at the signage on the door - it said distance to the ground was 5 feet and change (I think 5' 3"). I'd imagine the CR2 is at a similar height.

Does the ERJ-145 not have slides?

Around 5. I stand 6'2" and the CRJ service door is at about my shoulder height.

The CR2 floor to ground height is actually higher than the ER4. The ERJ sits on the ground, typically, in a nose-down fashion where the CR2 door is a noticeable amount higher. We have to adjust the jetbridges from the ERJ up to the CR2.

That being said, I have jumped before from the ER4 with no issues :) If you're not fit, you'd have a hard time doing that though.

This from the article:

"The affidavit says Sein entered the country through Newark, N.J"

I wonder what country he is from.

"In the world of airline travel, airlines just can't seem to catch a lucky break. American Airlines' regional carrier, American Eagle, is now part of the frenzy taking over.

*cut to reporter explaining the situation*

*cut to Sein talking about his experience*

Sein was simply jetlagged and was anxious for the jet to move. He claims that airlines now stuff coach passengers so tight, there's no room to be comfortable. And he's right. Since Airline Deregulation in 1980s, airlines have cut back on coach space, reducing leg space an average of 5", making seats thinner, and offering pitiful meals. After having traveled half the world in less than 24 hours, who could blame him for wanting to reach his final destination as intended?

American Airlines released a statement saying the behavior was unacceptable, but Sein's lawyers will be filing suit against the airline for damages and emotional stress.

For KADN, I'm einsteinboricua, Civil Aviation Forum"

Well, between the fact that he was on a CRJ-200 and the taxi from Concourse E to the runway at CLT can be interminable, who can blame him?

He jumped from the galley service door.

It even says so in the original article posted:
"Finally, Tu Lon Sein forced open the galley door of American Airlines flight 5242 on Thursday, and took flight himself ..."
