Maintenance on the 717 fleet is the reason. The fleet is stretched pretty thin so there isn't much in the way of slack for maintenance so either Dash 8s or 737s cover as required. Keep an eye on CBR-SYD, 737s pop up more than you would think because of this.

They dropped OOL-NAN in March apparently. OOL-NAN is a different market to BNE-NAN though, lot more opportunity for this route at BNE.

I don't know about this, it's not just a small stake, Qantas own 46% of Fiji Airways. While not to the standard of QF, FJ is still a full service carrier of sorts, would seem counter productive to compete with a fellow full service carrier on the route which you own a large percent of. Passengers booked on QF codeshare flight numbers on FJ already get equivalent QF benefits such as equal luggage allowance and frequent flyers are recognised the same as any QF flight with increased baggage allowance, priority tags, lounge access etc. DPS was different as the only carrier they own on the route was low cost JQ, and competing with mostly other low cost airlines bar GA, so there was some sense entering the market for them to take the higher end. I could however, see JQ launching more services to NAN to tap into the lower end of an already heavily leisure market.

NZ tomorrow (Wednesday) will finally open there new Lounge in MEL, about about 15months after starting to build it.

Meh...while it might be an improvement over the old lounge, it certainly doesn't look all that inviting...appears to be an unimaginative, cold, sterile and clinical lounge lacking in atmosphere and personality much like the new NZ lounge in BNE, at least the new lounge in BNE has a great view and lots of natural light which makes it a nicer space to be in. One thing I do like about the new NZ lounges are the old posters on the walls, they look cool.

I tend to agree but wouldn't be shocked if QF entered SYD-NAN daily with a 738... can't see much more than that though. QF has partnerships with PX and SB and they operate the same routes together. I don't know about FJ's current fleet situation but could they use an extra aircraft? If QF operated one of the daily FJ SYD rotations (the one that doesn't connect to LAX), this could free up FJ to launch (or increase capacity) to another destination.

Nope opened today.
I've seen the space - I enjoy the unique view of the apron, it's different a perspective I haven't seen before. Does seem a wee bit white and cold...
New space is set to be a non-airline lounge (plaza maybe?) also of note the MH lounge has closed so maybe a larger lounge than the NZ one which was an expanded foot print of the UA lounge.

Why is there not open skies between Australia and Fiji anyway? Is it Fiji wanting to protect FJ? I couldn't see any reason for it from Australia's point of view.

Have you been on the internet recently? Over 60s Australians can be very very angry about the world...
There is speculation it could be about Joyce's public statements on same sex marriage, which were met with some controversy. Can't imagine it can be due to industrial disputes because Qantas seems largely behind that now, and not a disgruntled shareholder because shares are soaring... we will see.

That's one cool and collected bloke. I'm sure the board knows this already - but if I were a Qantas board member I would take a lot of comfort from the fact that my CEO is that composed and professional after a very unexpected event. As a board member you absolutely want your CEO to be cool and collected when faced with a complete left field event.

What do we think the prospect of the other Jetstar airlines (GK/3K/BL) entering the long haul LCC market? Obviously this would require a significant order for aircraft but the two major players in the SE Asian LCC market (Air Asia & Scoot/Tiger) are both mixing long and short haul and there is a chance that Jetstar will be left behind.
Jetstar Japan could look at entering the Japan-Hawaii market, as well as look at routes like NRT-NAN/DPS/BKK. All of these destinations currently see JQ service anyway. Could also see GK take over JQ routes like CNS-NRT/KIX and OOL-NRT. Jetstar Asia & Jetstar Pacific would seem less likely but they are not necessarily limited to flying routes originating in their hubs - i.e. 3K could look at 5th freedom routes from BKK or HKG (if they have rights)

JQ could do with some more 787s soon... the introduction of MEL/SYD-SGN has seen reductions in the Japanese flights... 3 or 4 more 787s would allow further Japan routes (CNS-FUK/NGO?), as well as further growth through new routes and increased frequency in SE Asia... JQ still has a very small international presence at BNE for reasons I cannot quite understand... I appreciate that BNE is a significantly smaller market but it also has significantly less competition (even when including OOL)... routes like BKK, MNL, HKT, SGN would seem like they have potential. Growth can also come in MEL/SYD through increasing frequencies on their existing routes and maybe launching a few more (MEL-MNL?)

Jetstar used to have A330 services to PEK and KIX from SIN, but dropped them for A320 flights via TPE, MNL and HKG to Japan. Even Scoot flies to Japan via Taiwan rather than direct. Having done both airlines on that route I prefer Jetstar's frequency and times, despite the fact they use narrowbodies.
I do see the various Jetstar branches as quite conservative as opposed to AirAsia, but from a financial viewpoint this is probably a good thing. Their respective parents are established airlines (QF, JAL, VN) so they don't need to chase world domination like AirAsia but fit into their respective parent's strategies (also the case with Scoot/Tiger). Adding an aircraft like the 787 adds complexity and costs to their operations and medium/long-haul reduces utilisation and flexibility. They face a lot of competition in SE Asia so I'm not sure we'll see much longer haul flying out of SIN. Instead they can take advantage of carrying OneWorld and allied passengers on shorter routes where they lack a premium partner (eg SilkAir). I'm not convinced that the SE Asia to Europe routes are going to be that profitable for any of the LCCs so unless Qantas sees some need to offer a cheaper service via SIN or Vietnam to complement their direct flights bypassing Asia altogether I wouldn't expect them to follow.
What could be interesting is onward flights from Japan. Considering that Japan inbound tourism is booming the option to combine a stay over there with an onwards flight to Europe or the US (eg Hawaii) could be attractive. Also, with declining wages in Japan JAL may want to replace some services with a cheaper Jetstar alternative. But GK have had issues with certifications so their international flight expansion has been delayed and adding 787s means extra complexity in operations

I did some quick numbers for the Jetstar franchises. If each one if them + Cebu introduced daily 787 flights to major markets in Europe and West coast USA and maintained current long haul they would need just under 100 aircraft. If only the franchises could get their act together!

3K's A330 services were very small though, they never had a substantial fleet to really make a difference. Apart from that, I tend to agree with you that 3K/BL will be harder to do but that GK has potential. Jetstar is currently the largest LCC in the HNL market (source:
https://centreforaviation.com/insights/ ... aii-338909) and there is potential there for them to leverage this even further to enter the HNL-Japan market. Routes like HNL-NRT, KIX, NGO, FUK, CTS could all see GK service (and not all of these would be in competition with JL). This would allow them to leverage existing brand recognition in both markets, something that TZ and D7 don't have. Further services like OGG-NRT & KIX and even KOA could be possible.

Beach Market to Beach Market route that was a very risky attempt due to the ultra low yield nature on both ends of the route. Not sure if BNE-NAN can support 3-carriers, in addition to JQ's parent company (QF group) having a stake in Fiji Airways which makes JQ entering BNE-NAN less likely.
Fiji Airways (as Air Pacific) couldn't make OOL-NAN work as a Full Service carrier a fews year back before Jetstar's ill-fated attempt on this route as a LCC.

Though JQ had the advantage in that they could connect Japan with Nadi (via OOL) and also lots of surfers on the GC who are after low fares to other surfing destinations. Obviously wasn't enough though.
I think BNE-NAN is still possible on JQ, though its only a 500 seat increase allowed in the agreement so that's only 2.5weekly with an A320... hardly worth while...

Ah that's interesting - I had no idea CI were doing so well into SYD. Their Y fares have seemed a little on the high side any time I have looked at them as a one-stop option.

Yeah, it's the first announced scheduled A350 service to Sydney. In addition to the Airbus one that came here during route proving, there was a SQ flight that diverted from Melbourne a couple of weeks ago due to weather.

QF is ramping up their marketing in London. They were on the Southbank this morning handing out tim tams and A5 flyers about the new LHR-PER flights.
Very interestingly - the little map on the back of the flyer (sorry I can't get an image to post) says 'connect to more than 10 destinations across Australia' with the standard route map lines on a map of Australia going out from Perth to:
Kalgoorlie
Geraldton
Newman
Broome
Port Headland
Paraburdoo
Karratha
Adelaide
Melbourne
Canberra
Brisbane
Sydney
I know that the number of destinations from Perth is naturally skewed towards WA destinations - but they left the likes of ASP and DRW off completely.
I wonder if this is part of the quid pro quo for getting WA government funds for their new terminal - i.e. pushing WA tourism. If I were Tourism NT I wouldn't be thrilled at having been left off completely.

Interesting. I would say ASP and DRW have been left off as the flight schedules don't fit in with the PER-LHR schedule. I wonder why they haven't included LEA either as I would rate that up with BME as one of the top destinations on the list for tourism in WA

Neither DRW nor ASP will connect with LHR-PER

I didn't realise that QF had canned the evening 737 PER-DRW which overnighted in DRW and went back DRW-PER fairly early in the morning. It wasn't daily but it must have been 3 or 4 times a week. Even still for a marketing brochure it seems strange to leave out destinations which wouldn't have cluttered their map.

Yup, it's a seasonal service that operates through the height of the Top End's dry season. Along with QF800/801 returning, so too will QF842/841 MEL-DRW-MEL (Tues, Thurs) and QF844/845 SYD-DRW-SYD (Mon, Wed, Fri), also seasonal services for the Top End dry.

Great news! The 1815 arrival is great but the 2225 departure is only 1.5hours after the EK434 departure, not exactly making any new connection opportunities with that?

Ah that's interesting - I had no idea CI were doing so well into SYD. Their Y fares have seemed a little on the high side any time I have looked at them as a one-stop option.
I think this will be SYD's first scheduled A350 too. Have there even been any visitiors aside from the original Airbus promo tour/s?
Also CI will go from 4 weekly to daily on TPE-BNE-AKL from 1 Dec
Huge capacity increase given SYD-TPE is currently 4x weekly (not to mention the feed from AKL) so run as a 14x weekly standalone... Great news for SYD and BNE though, would hope to see the A350 at BNE soon and keep it daily year-round.

The MH126/127 appears to be downgraded to a 738, is this a temporary downgrade for a few weeks?
