2017 European Short Haul Heavies

Wed Apr 26, 2017 3:22 pm

Hi all,

Anyone able to add to the current list of heavies flying scheduled intra European schedules?

Aer Lingus DUB-AGP
Aeroflot SVO-LHR
BA LHR-MAD
Finnair HEL-LHR
Iberia MAD-LHR
LATAM MAD-FRA

Enjoyed a Singapore Airlines MAN-MUC trip last summer, wondering what other options are out there?
Understand both Korean Air and Ethiopian Airlines enjoy 5th Freedom intra European routes?

Thank!

Turkish Airlines: LHR-IST, has a couple of 77W Per day. TK flies frequently widebodies to many destinations in Europe
Aeroflot: LHR-SVO, some 333 Daily
British Airways, in the past, flew it's 763 to ARN, FCO, ATH, and IST
Air China: VIE-BCN, MUC-ATH, and a few more

MIAT TXL-SVO B767
Korean VIE-ZRH is winter seasonal I think(forgot the aircraft that they use for it)
WOW A330 KEF-AMS/CDG/LGW
Norwegian OSL-NCE/BCN/AGP with their B787-8/9
Ethopian with OSL-ARN and ARN-VIE on their B787. I have seen that they operate other tag on flights in Europe and i'm not sure wether they are purchasable. Anyone know by chance?

They do, Ethiopian sell tickets ARN-OSL. And starting next month, Singapore Airlines will start flying SIN-ARN via Moscow.

They still do.

Norwegian will also use the 787 on some intra European routes this summer.

Air France 787 CDG-LHR
TAP A330 LIS-LHR
Icelandair 767 KEF to LHR and others

What about the likes of Thomson/TUI and Thomas Cook/Condor? I know not all of their flights are scheduled though

Hi,

Turkish: MAD/BCN- IST with A330
Air Europa: MAD-BCN with a mix of A330 and B787
Ethiopian: FCO-MAD-FCO with 787 ( but I don´t really know if you can buy tickets for this flight or is just for people coming and going to ADD)

There are also many holiday flights to the Canary Islands that are run by long-haul planes but mostly are charters.

Ethiopian Airlines will have the following this summer:
- VIE-MXP
- ARN-OSL
- FCO-MAD
- MXP-BRU

These will primarily be on B788s, but may see B77Ls on occasion.

TUI will use Surinam Airways A340 to the Canary islands this summer season. Although the islands belong technically to the African continent. But since KEF is also located on the American plate. IST is located on the European plate (had to look that one up ;-)).

Emirates does LCA-MLA a few times a week on a 777.
LCA also sees BA's 767 and the occasional 777 from Austrian.

There are seven remaining 767s at BA, dedicated to and configured for domestic and short-haul work and based at LHR. On the current fleet plan, they'll be gone after next summer, so enjoy them while you can. So far this week, they've been to: EDI, FCO, AMS, LCA, ZRH, ARN, MAD, ATH, FRA, with a visit to NCE at the weekend thrown in. They used to be regulars at IST as well, but only once this month so far.

MT (Thomas Cook Airlines) flies 763s on many flights to Spain during the summer. Routes like MAN-LEI and MAN-PMI usually see some scheduled 763 service. They also fly into ACE and LPA.

The Thomas Cook B767's are now gone, one has gone to Amazon Prime Air, and the other 2 to Condor.

However, still plenty of widebody action from MAN:

Jet2 will have an A330 to various points, notably Palma, Rhodes and Tenerife.

Thomson use a B787 for various short haul flights

Thomas Cook use the A330 for routes such as Antalya, Dalaman and Lanzarote.

Turkish often use the A330 on MAN-IST also.

Wow! I wasn't aware of that. Last summer I spent some time in LEI and saw the 767-300 landing a few times. They'll probably start sending A330s or 757s then.

TAP's operation with widebodies from LIS to European destinations is done mainly on an occasional basis, depending on the load factor.
LHR has seen most of the upgrades from A32X to A330/340, currently happening several times per week on one of the morning rotations (today on TP363/374). Besides this, ORY, ZRH and VIE are the other destinations also receiving such upgrades on a minor scale.
Last year TAP had A330 flights from LIS to VIE almost on a daily basis due to tour reservations, it is unknown if the same will happen this year or not.

They will fly ADD-VIE-BRU and v.v. + ADD-MCP-BRU v.v., but no traffic rights on the intra-EU legs, so you will not be able to fly only this stretch.

There are no plans for TCX to use the A330 on short/medium haul this summer apart from STN and the occasional adhoc upgrade.

Best regards.

Appears to be! This is from flightaware, so I don't know in terms of how much longer they intend to do this, however if it's being deployed, I think it's to maximise the morning loads between longhauls!

It's between 3 and 4 weekly and will run until 31st of May only.
The same also goes for other shorthaul (ZRH-HAJ/PRG/VIE) 77W flights.

TCX operate a limited amount of long haul flights from STN during peek school holiday periods to Cancun, Las Vegas and Orlando but they are not using their own aircraft to these destinations as TXC will be utilising a chartered Air Tanker Airbus 330 as was the case last summer.

I think this thread is about scheduled airlines using wide bodies throughout Europe rather than charter airlines like TCX and TUI as they regularly use wide bodies all over Europe where as it's rare in 2017 for the major European airlines to utilise wide bodies within Europe unlike 20 years ago when it was common practice as all the majors flew wide bodies to major euro destinations and this shouldn't include the likes of one offs or crew training flights.

As we know already

Aer Lingus
Aeroflot
Air Europa
British Airways
Finnair
Iberia
Icelandair
Swiss
TAP Air Portugal
Turkish

All these European scheduled airlines are using wide bodies on a daily scheduled basis within Europe.

The others such as Ethiopian, Korean etc just have 5th freedom rights and are an extension to their origional flight.

Thomas Cook Scandinavia (DK) has 3 A330-300s that during the Summer, more or less shuttles between Scandinavia (mainly CPH, ARN, OSL) and the Mediterranean/Canary Island.

At least from OSL, during the high Summer season (Jun-Aug) they have about 10x weekly flights with the A330 places in Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Spain

I think this has stopped now, it was only for 2-3 weeks in March/April and that it's returned to an A330 twice daily now. That is not to say it might start again, I was looking at that myself, I would suggest you keep an eye on the schedules on their website.

BA 763 turn up on several routes, if you check the BA Source website this is probably most up to date with regards to the movements. But certainly MAD (1st and last flight), FCO, ATH, AMS (am flight), STO (last flight back from STO), FRA (1st flight), EDI ...second flight in the AM used to be.

OS 767/777 seem to be FRA-VIE ...generally on a Monday and Wednesday

BA 767 LHR-MAD-LHR, LHR-EDI-LHR, STO-LHR, FRA-LHR
BA77W LHR-MAD (got a MAD-LHR to come later)
AF A380 LHR-CDG
AF B789 LHR-CDG
LX B77W ZRH-HAJ-ZRH
IB A330 MAD-LHR
IB A340 MAD-LHR
LA B789 MAD-FRA
AY A350 HEL-LHR
(years ago OA A300 LHR-ATH-LHR)

kick myself for missing the BA 788 LHR-STO, GA 77W LGW-AMS and SQ 77W MUC-MAN now ...oh well can't be helped!

The following are TK operations to Europe from IST
FRA (A330)
TXL (A330)
AMS (A330)
LHR (77W/A330)
CDG (A330)
MAD (A330)
BCN (A330)
DUS (A330)
I may have left out one or two. TK also used to fly to places such as Milan, Vienna and Zurich and other Central European country with an occasional A330.

There's also a thread on here about SAS selling two slots at LHR and a link to article where they are saying they're not reducing capacity but that they will use larger aircraft so presumably this means SAS are looking to use what A330/A340s into LHR? Does anyone know anymore on this?

There's a separate thread on this subject, but the short answer is that the slots have been sold to AA, but for this summer at least, and probably longer, they will be leased back to SAS, so no change in summer 2017.

Wasn't BA flying 747s on LHR-SVO not too long ago?

...might be making it up, but I seem to recall it.

LHR-DME, but yes. The LON-MOW routes are not what they were, traffic is way down on what it was. BA have two flights on a "mid-haul" A321 and one on a 772 now. Transaero has gone out of business, and EasyJet has abandoned their LGW route. Just BA and SU now.
