SSJ100 to get raked wingtips

Thu Apr 20, 2017 4:59 am

It seems SCAC has made a final decision on what winglet design they'll use for the SSJ100, the studies carried out at TsAGI shows the raked wingtip as the best solution. Certification should be performed this year and they'll be available from 2018.

Those seem to be more like the swept blended winglets on the A330NEO, than the rakes on a Boeing.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

Will this be included on all the new deliveries or will it be a optional extra, and I wonder how many of the existing customers will go for the retrofit?

The article is old, from mid 2016, but the info is nevertheless new, as although the winglet program was known, we had never seen images of how they looked. I agree that these are more A330NEO style extensions than raked wingtips.

The aircraft should be in flight test or at least have rolled out by now, I would really like to see photos of those sometime.
In anny case, good to see the program advancing and being continously improved. LCY certification should also be coming up soon.

To the untrained eye the SSJ already looks like a very aerodynamically clean bird. These wiglets only enhance that impression...

It was made by Sukhoi, which I would argue makes some of the most aerodynamically capable aircraft in the world. The Soviet (and now Russian) theory on fighters has been maneuverability and (for Sukhoi) size.Unlike Migs, which are petite, Sukhoi has had experience making very aerodynamic large aircraft.

Taking that knowledge and applying it to a civilian airliner that doesn't need the performance of, say the Su-35BM definitely shows in her looks and performance.

It seems airframe sn 95032 which is the LR testbed will be retrofitted and used for certification for LCY.

For me they look like a mix of sharklets and winglets of the old-gen E-Jets, because they bend away in same about 45 degrees angle from the wings, but are swiped back like the sharklets on the A320neos or A350s.

Interesting cocept and something new...

These winglets appear very similar to the A330neo but even more so with the COMAC C919, appears to be a new trend!

I think they've literally just photoshopped some A350 winglets onto their aircraft in those images, the angles are way too similar.

Good to see this beautiful bird getting some love from the manufacturer...I am really hoping the market will show it some love too! It's a truly handsome bird!

 I got pranked by a two-year old April 1st joke! :embarrassed2:

 Even more embarrassing is that I already pointed it out in an old post of mine. :old:

But it'd be really cool to see the Superjet with winglets. 8-)

The winglets are completely horizontal, there's no angle in them other than the swept-back wingtips, SCAC tested quite a few solutions including similar ones to those of other manufacturers, but these ones gave them the best results.

It was my understanding that the winglets and LCY certification are separate things, and that the winglets are not needed for LCY capabililty. Or am I wrong?
