Nordica to buy 2 CRj900s

Tue Apr 18, 2017 3:34 pm

The Estonian flag carrier will further expand it's fleet in a deal with the only Estonian owned bank, LHV. They will finance the purchase with 25 million euros, making it the largest private aviation related investment in Estonian history.

Great news for Nordica, they rose from the ashes of the bankrupt Estonian air and now have a fleet of 8 CRJs + a leased 145 . They hope to reach profit by 2019, and recently got a deal with SAS to fly regional routes from Copenhagen. For this, they will acquire 4 ATR72-600s.

Note: Nordica doesn't own the aircraft, they are owned by a subsidiary company Regional Jet. So, technically, they got the deal.

Once they open a base in CPH to fly the 4 ATRs for SAS shouldn't they get a 5th ATR to operate their own routes out of CPH, instead of contracting them out to BMI?

What are the per trip and per seat costs of running ATR72-600 vs ERJ-145 on routes such as ORB-CPH and GRQ-CPH?

That would make a lot of sense. I read some more articles about Nordica (only in Estonian), and they said they plan to have 15 aircraft in their fleet by the end of the year, consisting of ten CRJs and five ATRs, I'd assume the fifth one would be for their own routes out of CPH.

The two CR9s are 2011-builds, the atwonline article says. Maybe they are ex-SAS/Cimber aircraft?

Countries like Estonia should immediately open up their aviation sector to foreign capital

They are 2008-2010 built. It also seems they will more or less replace the CRJ-700s, although the last -700 will be kept for spares

They are open, as long as it is from EU. Being part of the EU, the same rules applies to every country.

I wonder why this is thing is not renamed in something like LOT Estonia or LOT Nordica? It would be easier to connect the dots.

Not rebranding Nordica to LOT Estonia gives them more freedom for the future - imagine they had once called it Adria Estonia, it would be much more costly to terminate the relationship with Adria. Plus there is some marketing value in having a national flag carrier in Estonia.
