UA Closes IAH 787 Base, Opens IAD

Sat Apr 08, 2017 1:08 pm

Not surprisingly, given the uptick in 787 flying from IAD this summer, UA will close IAH and open IAD. Aircraft utilization is the reason given, though I'm guessing lower costs on IAD flights also has something to do with it.

What pilot base will handle the DEN-NRT route?

I think a better reason is because of the hit IAH has taken with oil and cutbacks in flights, it makes more economic sense to have the fleet type on the coasts than in IAH. Though I guess from a utilization stand point, to fly IAD-Europe you will only need 1 plane per segment because the stage length is 6-8 hours in each direction unlike West Coast to Asia where at least 2 frames are required.

United shifts 787's from IAH to IAD

Mon Apr 10, 2017 3:13 am

A big surprise to me........ but makes sense as it may lead to higher profitability at the IAD Hub. Great news for IAD!

New 787 service to Beijing, São Paulo and London Heathrow.

So sorry...I see it's been posted. Moderators.... Please delete this post.

UA to moves 787s out of Houston

Mon Apr 10, 2017 2:12 pm

This morning the HBJ is reporting that United is planning to move it's 787s out of IAH. They mention FRA and GIG in particular. I don't know what the plan is for LHR or the tag on DEN and LAX/SFO flights. They mention they are closing the pilot base here.

DO you think this is to be a new A350 base? How will they handle the moves, beyond just FRA and GIG. The Dreamliner has become quite a fixture here. Article below:

Thanks for the insights!

So what is the future for the 787. esp. the 788 fleet going forward? Does this mean they will be flying IAD-Europe routes this winter instead of 763's? Places like GVA, ZRH, CDG? Or will they be doing IAD-Asia?
I was hoping some frames would be placed back on IAH-Deep South America this Northern Winter, but that's not going to happen now.

UA upgraded the IAD-CDG from a 788 to a 789 a few days ago.

They could upgauge it to a 789 and fly LAX-NRT-DEN-NRT-LAX, otherwise I'd say one of the IAD flights to DEN switches from a 739 to the 788

That route is paired in a W routing with SFO-CDG so one or both routes must have the demand.

According to the other thread, the 788 will come from SFO. A second 787 flight appears in the SFO-DEN-SFO schedules beginning at the same time. This means that, on some days, along with a 772 rotation, three of the 12 frequencies on DEN-SFO will be widebodies!

Likely LAX as part of W routing LAX-NRT-DEN-NRT-LAX.

787 pilots are qualified on both the -8 and -9 and can fly both. The LAX pilot base will likely do the DEN-NRT as part of a LAX-NRT-DEN-NRT-LAX W routing.

Great news for IAD. Would love to see ORD get some 787 flights.

Does anyone have a list of all the UA 787 routes?

In the summer schedule (looking at late June):
788: SFO-IAH x2, SFO-MUC, SFO-TLV, SFO-KIX, SFO-PVG, SFO-XIY (3x weekly), SFO-CTU (4x weekly), DEN-SFO, DEN-NRT, IAH-SFO, IAH-DEN, IAH-GIG
789: SFO-DEN, SFO-LHR, SFO-CDG, SFO-HND, SFO-HGH (3x weekly), SFO-SIN, SFO-SYD, LAX-LHR, LAX-NRT, LAX-PVG, LAX-SYD, LAX-MEL, DEN-SFO, IAD-LHR, IAD-CDG

Then IAD-GRU and IAD-PEK to be added in the fall (not sure if those will be 788s or 789s). I believe all 12 788s are needed to operate the summer schedule, and 17/20 789s with a few spares.

It would make sense if that were the case. IAH isn't losing any destinations and with more 777's coming here, we aren't losing seat count. Its a product downgrade but it isn't a capacity downgrade.
