A380 Wake Turbulence Incidents

Fri Mar 24, 2017 9:36 am

Couldn't search anything on the forums regarding this - on Jan 7 a Bombardier Challenger 604 passed 1000ft below an Emirates A380 in the opposite direction, got caught in wake turbulence, and flipped a couple of times and suffered engine failures as a result. The flight landed safely in Muscat, but the aircraft was written off because the damage it received was beyond repair. There were injuries and occupants were taken to the hospital.

What this article also revealed is that there have been quite a number of A380 wake turbulence incidents in recent history too, something I never knew about happening in mid air. In fact one of the victims was a 744, and I thought only small planes were very vulnerable to wake turbulence from bigger jets.

Here's the source link to the avherald article on the incident that happened in Jan.

Should there be bigger clearances for the A380 during cruise flight then? Is this is a legitimate safety concern?
