Will PHX receive more long haul flights soon?

Mon Mar 20, 2017 4:29 pm

Since Lufthansa left, the only long haul flight has been to London. Since Phoenix is already has a good population and is growing, could the city see more flights soon?

Sandwiched between DFW and LAX, the former depending on connecting passengers to sustain many of those intl.long haul routes and the latter battling for every passenger in the most competitive market in the country. AA doesn't want to cannibalize LAX or DFW with PHX getting its own long haul routes. You won't see any long haul on AA metal that's for sure. As for foreign carriers, maybe a JL to Tokyo in the next decade. It's a race between PHX and MIA for that Tokyo flight lol

I'd expect the opposite: the potential for PHX to be dehubbed once AA renovates LAX and gets more gates.

It isn't going to happen. Operating costs in PHX are much Lower than LAX and AA has a very strong market position (Southwest is strong there, but also in LAX).

Because of its location, PHX serves a bit of a different role than DFW, including connecting flights to places not served from DFW. The hub may be adjusted a bit, but it isn't being discontinued anytime soon. PHX is not Memphis or Cleveland.

PHX is like SLC for Delta, except Delta doesn't have a mega hub 800 miles away in Texas. There is nothing PHX offers that DFW does not.

Other than an additional metro area of 4 million people, a sunny VFR hub 330+ days a year, and enough demand for AA to carry roughly 10 million enplanements through the hub yearly.

And you're right, Delta doesn't have a mega hub 800 miles away, they have two hubs in under 800 miles (LAX at 590 mi and SEA at 689 mi). AA has setup LAX and PHX to act in a duopoly, where PHX is focused on connections and regional adds while LAX is high-yield, high-volume O&D.
