FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Nice to see both AM & TK increasing BOS instead of reducing for a change.

Concerning EK - loads were 50% last September on DXB-LAX which was double daily A380. Better off chasing all the cheap traffic through SEA and BOS using B6/VX/AS.

I wonder if they are beefing up just in case B6 gets any ideas.

Regardless - AM launched BOS-MEX right this time - Started off with 6 weekly, adjusted for seasonality, experimented with flight times, and had better marketing. It seems like running a red-eye from BOS is the right move. The DL JV also helps even though the codeshare has always existed.

Is this right? If so, quite surprising. Setting aside the fact that airline commentary of late has spoken to a slight strengthening in Brazil, I must admit that it would be shocking for Brazil's primary network carrier to not link the country's most important financial center with NYC. Cancelling GIG-JFK in favor of GIG-MCO I get, but it's hard to imagine Latam exiting GRU-JFK.

I will be interested to see what happens with these slots if, in fact, LGA-RDU is ending. As was discussed at length when this route was announcement, this seemed like a ridiculous waste of slots at LGA that served absolutely no purpose whatsoever for United's broader network. If this is indeed a cancellation, that will come as little surprise to many of us.

Not a sublease but part of the buildup at ORD... looks like UA is going from 14 to 17 daily flights on ORD-LGA.

If you recall correctly UA didn't drop or reduce anything at LGA to add RDU. No one here was sure where the slots came from. I guess with the ORD build up they needed the aircraft on other routes. It makes sense. Too bad that route didn't even last a year, it was discussed at length here.

Ah, thank you - so there we have it, just as many of us predicted. If United was intent on keeping those LGA slots, they should have just added frequencies to hubs to begin with rather than wasting time with the useless RDU endeavor.

Two interesting that I saw... (1) The Mokulele service to both IPL and SMX have been in place for some time now. They aren't new...unless I'm missing something. And (2) It seems like WN is further reducing service at SEA, but they ended up with one or two additional gates at B-Concourse.

Nadavatar, you are right, even as retaliation for DL's EWR-RDU, RDU-LGA was an oddball.
Maybe UA for some reason needed to do something to sit on those frequencies from LGA, at least for a few months.

no surprise about LGA-RDU. it made little to no sense at all to start that. no frequent fliers or feed at either end. Delta RDU-EWR makes a lot more sense given the focus city at the RDU end.

MW started service at SMX in October 2016, they did not have any previous schedule for summer. They currently have nothing loaded for Sept so that month will also look new when it is actually loaded, after that they will have 12 months of previous schedules.

The IPL service started in May 2016. So that one is a bit unusual unless they had some previous misfiling or something similar.

The Insel Air flights between MIA and CUR are temporarily suspended through June 2017, unless they are leasing MD 80s or other
equipment from other airlines to operate into the United States. Currently they are flying Fokker 50s around the ABC islands.

WN is starting LGA-TPA, as B6 ended that route (for LGA-BOS) leaving only DL to cover LGA-TPA.

I find it interesting for WN to be covering it. I'd think WN would want to cover LGA-FLL first, as it opens FLL as an international gateway. The LGA-TPA market is underserved however if only DL is the only carrier.

IAD-SAN is quite different than IND-SAN, aside from the call letters looking similar. The latter is shorter and IND is the only airport for IND area, where WN does well.

Also, LGA is still restricted by slots and EWR is not. It makes sense to connect LGA to more strategic cities, like TPA (although I think FLL would be better, too, but it has more competition).

Good riddance to the second EK flight. Already downgauged to a 777, that flight had HORRIBLE timings. You'd arrive at DXB at like 1am.

The flight isn't discontinued. It's only suspended for a few weeks during the fall shoulder season. Back in November.

The slots came from WN. There was a deal way back when AirTran traded slots with CO. The deal got FL out of EWR and got FL more slots at LGA. When the slots at EWR were removed it unwound this deal that had evolved through mergers to a deal between WN and UA. So, WN had to return the LGA slots attached to that.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but WN's LGA-TPA was announced in a prior release of the FLL expansion release (that included IAD, EWR, PHL year-round, as these markets are expected to help funnel connection traffic past FLL in the summer). That said, I think WN will find a way to squeeze in LGA-FLL 2x, but it may not come at LGA-TPA expense, and come at some other market expense like LGA-ATL trimming. Such didn't happen in the latest extension though. Maybe WN hopes EWR-FLL will adequately cover the NY-FLL-international, but I have doubts as those that gravitate to EWR tend towards flying UA. It's also heavier on NJ point of sale.

Tampa definitely improving. LGA. More Denver and BWI.

Hoping the Denver options carry through November to drive up non-stop capacity a bit as the current UA non-stop for Thanksgiving is $777 per ticket for a family of four: a bit pricey.

Nope, Iberia had already disclosed that the flights would be operated under its AOC and with its crews until they can get Level up and running as a stand alone business within IAG.

It's really simple: it was a retaliation route to DL for starting EWR-RDU. Route has a lot of O&D and UA has a lot of frequent fliers in NYC and Westchester for whom taking a UA option from LGA probably suited them just fine even if they were used to flying from EWR.

UA swapped three slots that otherwise would have been running ORD/IAH/DEN and given how UA usually uses 319 and 320s out of LGA, they easily moved a few of the 14-15 ORD flights to a 738 and 739 and nobody noticed the the difference.

I doubt UA had the intention of running the route long term (unless it took off unexpectedly) but it got the point across--or didn't. We actually have no idea if DL saw any impact at LGA on the RDU route. BTW, this is a also a long-time AA route, meaning UA got double duty on the harm.

It did get the point across - the point being that United was willing to waste money and the equivalent of one 2-class RJ worth of capacity in order to fight an inevitably losing battle on competitors' higher ground where they are larger and stronger. Delta is still flying EWR-RDU - and I don't see that changing if it hasn't by now.

WN dropping PDX-HOU (and SEA-HOU)...looks like time for AS to add PDX-IAH. And they're down to one daily SEA-SAN...why bother? They've already pulled out of SEA-SNA, are dropping BNA and MKE (seasonal reductions?). It seems their SEA schedule is getting less and less.

That seems to contradict enilria's post that it came from WN (originally FL). Were these three slot pairs like new bonus three slot pairs, or cut from ORD/IAH/DEN?

If it was retaliatory to RDU-EWR, which it does appear so, maybe coincidentally. When DL launched RDU-PHL, AA didn't get retaliatory. Then again, both get away with charging highway robbery fares, atleast up until F9 added service.

N717TW wrote:

Plus, B6 flies RDU-JFK which likely puts some low fare pressure in the mix, even to LGA. Just checking two weeks out, it appears LGA-RDU one-way on AA is over $100 less than LGA-CLE (no less than $300 one-way up to April 1), a route where it's UA vs. DL vs. AA, but no LCC in the mix.

I've heard WN is loosing a gate in Seattle, which is requiring cuts to flights.

This was a ridicilous move of UA. They have no FFs neither in LGA nor RDU, What were they expecting? I wonder if they sold those slots or are they going to strengthen other LGA routes from its hubs.

United has plenty of FF's in the NY Area, including those that fly from LGA. UA's LGA network is focused on ORD, DEN, IAH, IAD, and CLE. RDU was an oddball route, and likely one to sit on slots. Made no sense for them to be on this route, with DL and AA flying it. Was a poor decision to snap back at DL for starting EWR to RDU.

RDU for Delta is a significant focus market, so it made sense perhaps for them to add EWR. It did not make sense for UA to add it from LGA.

I've heard WN is loosing a gate in Seattle, which is requiring cuts to flights.

As opposed to tighting?

Stop it with the LGA-RDU on UA discussion!

It was a stupid, stupid, stupid route. Started for a phallic contest with Delta.

UA has a very small presence at LGA. Always has, always will. They had service to DEN and ORD pre merger with a small regional operation to IAD. Post merger they have DEN ORD IAH CLE and an even smaller regional operation to IAD.

The ONLY non hub route that UA has flown from LGA over the past 20 years was a single daily MIA that was later moved to JFK and then dropped altogether.

They may still continue COs AUA Saturday only service.

RDU doesnt fit. It was a money losing reaction.

UA/CO fanboys with posts claiming it was a legit attempt at a route are living in the fake news world

I agree with JFKLGANYC here. But it's too bad RDU-LGA on UA didn't stick around longer just to entertain us all here. I thought they were done with ridiculous routes that were not long term projects. I guess not. UA is actually a much larger player now at LGA thanks to the merger. UA was definitely a small time player at JFK. 17 flights a day just to ORD is not small. By the way, UA dropped CO's old LGA-AUA route quietly some time ago. But of course some people who prefer UA would have used that RDU flight, but that wasn't really the point.

Thanks for the posts as always enliria.

This doesn't really mean anything but I do find it kind of funny, I had friends fly up from RDU to LGA to stay with me, and they flew UA up and AA down. No DL.

I know for certain that the PDX-HOU is seasonal, as well as SEA-BNA/MKE. I don't think WN is retreating out of SEA...most are reductions due to the lower demand in the Fall.

Just to nit-pick, your first statement is false. AUA was flown post merger, and they fly MTJ on Saturday during the winter.

Ah yes, UA has no frequent fliers in New York, where their fourth largest hub is. That's right.

Most of the people who use EWR are people from North NJ But most of the people I know who use LGA have a DL or AA FF.

WN is being reported as a year to year comparison, so that means they flew it last year and are not flying it this year. It is a real reduction for the months covered in the report.

I thought the same. I really expected to see MIA-XNA return when scrolling through the list after seeing OMA.

That is surprising that AA does not do MIA - XNA, seems like it would be a good market for them.

That seems to contradict enilria's post that it came from WN (originally FL). Were these three slot pairs like new bonus three slot pairs, or cut from ORD/IAH/DEN?

The CO/FL deal over EWR actually involved 6 DCA and 4 LGA slots pairs. I've seen no evidence that WN dropped that number of flights from LGA and DCA.
