NCAA Tournament Charters - 2017

With the First Four games starting tonight in DAY, and the rest of the action starting Friday, there will be a good bit of travel to and from the venues.

For DAY the next two nights, I've found the following:

All on Monday, March 13:

Interesting explanatory article from the NYT three years ago. The NCAA says they spare no expense. Another article I saw said that they start planning months in advance, meeting with potential carriers, brokers, etc. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/24/spor ... .html?_r=0

One thing they have done with the demise of some of the crap charter carriers (and a few good ones, too) is to try to move teams in the evening, making use of RON aircraft of major airlines. For example, one article noted that WN has hundreds of aircraft available after 8pm most weeknights, but very few between 6am and 8pm. From the lists above, it looks like the charter carriers still predominate. I am surprised there isn't more Miami Air than there is on those lists. I am happy to see an established carrier like Sun Country doing as much as it is doing, and I hope that trend -- and using the majors as much as possible -- continues. The NCAA says it doesn't care about price. Good. Then don't let the fact that a CheapoCrapo36thStreet Air offers great flexibility lure you into using them instead of Delta. The kids are too valuable.

That would be consistent with a lot of their tournament charter work the past couple of years, which has largely involved WN stations.

The behind the scenes of all this, is that each school submits requests and preferences for everything from aircraft size to accomodations (food served on plane, boxed lunches/dinners, which days you want to travel, etc) and the NCAA will get back to you with the best thing they can offer you.

About 3 years ago my school (I coach the cheerleaders at the University of South Carolina) started requesting evening/night travel for our charters. Since we started doing that, our requests have been approved every single time. We used to fly first thing in the morning or middle of the afternoon, and we always ended up with flight issues, weather issues, weight issues, etc. Since we started traveling 1 night early, we haven't had any issue! It's amazing how the NCAA is able to pull this all together!

It appears Oregon was on SCX8657 EUG-SMF today.
And in looking at FlightAware, it looks like there was a Miami Air BSK roundtrip DAY-SMF-DAY today. I don't know what that was for...if it was for UC Davis fans and the Cal Aggie Band-uh, they would have arrived DAY after tip-off. (UC Davis won, so now it's off to slaughter in Tulsa, vs. # 1 Kansas. Tough draw for their first NCAA tournament!)

Tricky scheduling: one of the SCX inbounds to SMF was then turned to position to EUG to bring the Ducks back. It looks like that plane is now (I assume) deadheading back to MSP.

SY has 26 aircraft in service. The have their scheduling down to an art. They know months in advance when these charters are coming. They took delivery of 823SY (26 for the winter) within the last month and put the plane in service like the last week.

Given that there are games being played in Sacramento, the plane is likely positioning to SMF to take another team home. Davis will get their own flight, I am sure.

Too bad UC Davis didn't have their game in Sac. It's a 20 minute drive from campus, and on the local Yolo Bus route.

I do find the March Madness bids interesting, with teams crisscrossing the country for "regional" games. Like Sac hosting the Midwest and South Regions games, with Oregon and UCLA playing in those. But then it makes for much more interesting charter flights for us a.nuts to follow!

This schedule is, in general, very heavy on charter carriers and quite light on scheduled carriers and hybrids like G4 (other than, obviously, SY). I wonder whether that will change this weekend with lighter utilization of scheduled fleets. The Seton Hall DL charter, for instance, was basically utilization flying with the aircraft turning back to GSP.

Yes, although remember that flights where the destination depends on the game outcome are in the minority. Today and tomorrow, everyone travels regardless of game results. Moreover, in some games the destination is reasonably certain before the game starts (e.g. perhaps there was not an airplane awaiting Villanova if they lost in the first round since Mt. Saint Mary's did not fly.

Kaiser Air was the flight department of Kaiser Industries (you Californians should think Henry J. Kaiser; the rest of us should think Kaiser Permanente). They were spun off from Kaiser at some point, just as Midwest Express/K-C Aviation was spun off from Kimberly-Clark. Henry Kaiser was kind of an analogue to Howard Hughes, without the crazy. They were an absolutely blue-chip, high-class, high-capability, known-among-people-who-know kind of operation for decades. I still have my doubts about the kind of procedures, training, policies, and safety-culture of teensy charter carriers flying transport-category aircraft, but these guys most likely fall very much on the far good end of the continuum; at least they used to.

The line is about 350 miles, though it's a little squishy. Still, trips of less than 300 miles that can be done exclusively on an interstate almost always are bus trips.

To comment about why some teams fly and others bus. I was the student leader in the Cincinnati pep band from 2010-2015 and traveled with the team to the NCAA tournament games. NCAA requires that any school within 350 miles of it's tournament venue use ground transportation for travel (mileage calculated using https://web1.ncaa.org/TES/exec/miles). The travel party consists of the team, staff, pep band, cheerleaders, & mascot and there is a max of 75 passengers (increases to 100 for the Final 4). Typically, as you're seeing, most aircraft are 737s, A319s, MD-80s, etc. That is because the executives and coaches get first class (if the plane has first class seating) or at least a seat between them (4 passengers to a row in a 3-3 layout). The players usually because of height get exit rows with a seat between or a whole 3 seats to themselves to stretch out while at altitude. And the band/cheer/mascots are wedged in the back filling every seat.
