BA LHR-DFW flights (BA0193)

Tue Mar 14, 2017 1:19 pm

Hi all.

Since when have BA operated 0193 with their 744 aircraft?
Also, what frames do they stick on the route usually?

I'm flying 0193 in August and noted it was scheduled as a 744. Was wondering what to expect. I know some of their 744s have been refurbed. But no idea which ones.

BAs flight DFW-LHR canceled two Thursdays ago? Saw BA 744 on hardstand next to Terminal D ramp shut down about 7pm. March 9 was the date.

Changed to 744 operation with the summer to winter timetable shift at the end of October 2016. Will stay that way for this summer at least.
Scheduled for, and almost always gets, a plane from the F14/J86/W30/Y145 subfleet. These are the planes that were refurbished in 2015/16.

I am flying DFW-LHR with BA on May 10th, so also curious what type of interior to expect on the 744.

I flew on a BA 744 LHR-LAS in February and the plane was an old tired pos with a horrendous inflight system and really old seats. 6 days later I flew DFW-LHR on a BA 744 with new seats and a wonderful inflight system (both flights were in Premium Economy).. so, some are upgraded and some are not. I assume LAS is a low yield market so it gets the old planes and possibly DFW is a better yield market and gets the upgraded aircraft, but this is just a guess.

You can plug a flight no into here http://thebasource.com/flighttracker.html to see the last month's worth of operations including configuration. With regard to the 744 fleet 14F/86J/30W/145Y = refurbished seats and new IFE 14F/52J/36W/235Y = non refurbished seats and old IFE.

BA now has 36 744s in service (following one withdrawal earlier this month). 18 have been refurbished and now have a very high proportion of premium seats, as you might expect these planes are used on routes with high paid-for premium demand. The other 18 were not refurbished, have many more Y seats and are used on routes with either a high leisure or low premium demand (not necessarily the same thing). Both types turn up on LHR-JFK as different timings have different demand patterns.
The unrefurbished examples will leave the fleet from next year onwards as the A350-1000s start being delivered, spread out between 2018 and 2022.
Given BA's habit of moving planes round, it doesn't follow that the routes which have unrefurbished 744s now will end up with shiny new A350s, of course.

This link shows each aircraft redo/type that operated the BA DFW-LHR route going back to Jan 2012...

I have another thread on the site detailing flights further back, to about 2009 I think at LGW.

Thanks for the info.

The ba source tells us what aircraft has what IFE but does not state what IFE system is the better.
I'm guessing Rockwell Collins is the old IFE and Panasonic eX3 is the newer?

But never mind, I've booked seat 63A so I will get my first and likely last chance to fly the upper deck.

Hey 737,

At the moment the May10 service is being sold as the Mid-J 747 so it's the old cabin and IFE with higher capacity Y and Traveller Plus is placed between First and Club on the main deck. Hope that's helpful.

Further to what Andy33 mentioned, Boeing 747-400's returned to BA192/193 on 30th October 2016 following the change-over from the Summer to the Winter schedule and according to Airline Route, the Summer 2017 schedule from 26th March 2017 will continue to see Boeing 747-400's instead of Boeing 777-300ER's. Checking FlightRadar24 for the past 6 months show Super Hi-J Boeing 747-400's being frequently used (apart from 6 occasions during December 2016 which G-BNLO/Y and G-CIVC/E/M/U operated which are un-refurbished Mid-J configured) on BA192/193, these being the 18 refurbished examples with the new Panasonic eX3 entertainment systems and re-upholstered seats.

You are not wrong, the Rockwell Collins system is the older and unreliable IFE system compared to the Panasonic eX3 system which is considerably newer.

Thanks for the info. Maybe the older seats are at least more comfortable? That was the one good thing about AA's 772s before they got refurbished. I'll just bring my Nintendo and iphone loaded up with content, at least the Eastbound flight is quicker and I'm on the AA 77W returning.

The BA 744 refurb didn't extend to providing brand new seats. Fly in the same cabin class on a refurbished or unrefurbished plane and you get identical design seats.
The refurbished planes had the seats overhauled, re-padded where necessary, and new covers, and of course the new IFE fitted. Apart from that there were new carpets, and some new side panels. All the cabin classes have had new seats fitted during the life of the planes anyway - for instance the First seats were introduced from 2010 onwards and J-class from 2006 onwards. The oldest 744, G-BNLK was new in 1990, and while BA expect a long life out of their airframes, they do replace the seats occasionally.

I have flown this route 4 times with BA and had always been a 744 last time was 2014 it since changed to a 777 for part of the year. I am booked on the LHR-DFW on 5th June and that's showing a 744

Thanks for the information. Regardless if the seat is a letdown or not, being in Y I don't expect to too much. Even my favorite Y products (CX, CI) aren't that far ahead of others. I'm just excited to log a new carrier and get in another 747 flight before they are gone.

Interesting, I've flown the route three times, once in 2015 and twice in 2016, each time operated by a 77W. I guess that was luck of the draw.
