Re: The MSY Thread - Part 6

Mon Jul 17, 2017 5:41 pm

Here are the latest passenger and load factor stats for each route flown out of MSY. Domestic data is for April 2017, and international data is for January 2017.

On the domestic side, Alaska's MSY-SEA route had the highest load factor at 95.3%, and GLO's MSY-HSV route had the lowest load factor at 22.3%. Southwest started once weekly service to CMH and RDU this month. RDU had a 62.6% load factor, and CMH had a 41.3% load factor. There was only one day of flying, so we'll get a better idea how these perform when May stats come out next month.

On the international side, AC saw a big increase in seats and pax, but loads fell to 79.6% as capacity increase outstripped demand increase. CM right-sized ops this winter with improved load factors, but a drop in seats and pax. DL's CUN flight saw dismal loads during the month.

Fascinating. MSY-LAX is #1 for every carrier on the route in LF, except for DL where it is #2.

Change of topic but what exactly is the plan when the new terminal opens with regards to the current terminal parking garages as well as the car rental facility? long term are they hoping to relocate the car rental facility to the north side or will they just bus people again?

i know concourses A and B are being bulldozed an d and the main old terminal are remaining... is C still on the fence about what they will do with it or is it definitely coming down too?

Also, general comment but the airport has done a really good job with the staging area for Uber etc... easiest experience ive had at an airport so far with car sharing app.. so well done MSY

AFAIK, all of C from the end of the large arching roof to the end of the concourse is getting bulldozed. Haven't seen any change in that plan...

We might see a new F9 route announced tomorrow. There's a big gap in the schedule in October, and they are supposed to be making many new route announcements. Already it shows MCO operating daily and the 321 returning on the PHL route.

Sadly I think it will be a route we already have. Doubt it will be a new route.

Might be nothing, but usually the airport publishes a monthly air service update and hasn't yet done so for July. In the past when we've had new service announcements, it seems that they've delayed the update to include the new service. Could be a coincidence though.

I think there are several markets that could use ULCC competition from MSY: MSP, PHX, and SAN come to mind. Maybe F9 could be the carrier to start MKE and PDX - they've run CLE-PDX for years, a market that is similar in size and distance to MSY.

It would great to see F9 expand service here some more. Agree that PHX would be a good add to compete against the WN monopoly.

In regards to LAX, now that the film industry (especially television) has started filming in the area again, the LAX numbers have improved dramatically for all carriers.

The five gate expansion and new opening date – February 2019 – comes as the airport has exceeded all passenger enplanement targets and added new international airlift to Europe and South America.

They must mean Central America, not South America.

PVD is a nice alternative to BOS. Good to see a new destination being offered by F9. Not sure about SAT with WN already offering daily service there and upt the road at AUS. Still, nice to see F9 adding service here. Wasn't sure if they would even be around a couple of years back.

It's not fully loaded yet, but I'm also seeing MSY-AUS-SAN being offered 3 weekly. Both SAT and AUS are high yielding, especially compared to DFW/DAL and IAH/HOU, so I think there is a lot of room for stimulation.

F9 is apparently offering 1-stop, daily MSY-SAN service (starting in November?) with the stop being AUS 3x weekly and SAT the remaining 4 days. This is offered on a r/t basis.

This new service appears to give both MSY and SAN a new nonstop connection to SAT. (This will be only the 2nd carrier offering n/s SAN-SAT service.)

I would expect that eventually there will be a 2nd nonstop between MSY and SAN (competing with the WN service currently offered) -- my guess would be AS but it wouldn't shock me if NK started it -- but in the meantime, this direct/thru service by F9 is certainly welcomed.

Yes, starts October 6. I figured we'd get ULCC to New York soon, but ISP is a pleasant surprise, considering how bad things are at LGA and JFK.

Was definitely not expecting to see ISP. Nice alternative airport to the craziness that is LGA and JFK. F9 is certainly being bold on trying different routes.

They did, a few years ago when Trenton first started. I think it was only 2 or 3 weekly - not a very good schedule and Trenton did not have much infrastructure at the time. At least PVD and ISP have large populations and transit nearby.

Well, you have to look at what that expansion is. Its predominately E175s, which cannot reach to MSY. There have been some large markets added or expanded otherwise.

MSY-PDX will be a while as Alaska also has MSY-SFO starting. SEA, PDX and SFO will all compete for connecting traffic.

No. Just because AS may not start it doesn't mean WN will. WN hasn't been expanding much in the PNW and is generally more averse to very long flights, which PDX and SEA would be.

I just don't see these happening anytime soon. There's been a lot of expansion and LFs are down. We need to get current flights stable and increasing and then worry about adding even more new markets.

SEA and SFO are both poorly timed for all but a few connections as they both leave the west coast in the morning and arrive late at night. Those flights are all about O&D. If they ran an evening or redeye PDX-MSY with a morning MSY-PDX, it would compliment the others nicely.

MSY and BNA are the largest unserved markets from PDX, so it's only a matter of time. MSY was about 115 PDEW in Q2 16, so assuming it continues growing, a spring 2018 should be doable or for sure 2019.

this was my point on portland.. its just a large market underserved that would def grow if we had direct connections... i dont suppose alaska could try a direct route with a stop in between to refuel (maybe alberquerque or salt lake city? Either way its likely Nashville and NOLA would be added at the same time

Airlines don't do fuel stop flights, far too expensive (ABQ is way out of the way anyways). It can be done non-stop with a 737 or A320 series. I think it is coming, but not in the near future.

Re: connections, there are some, its not timed to hit everything though because it can't geographically efficiently serve much connections from MSY. Either way, while O&D is the most important and vast majority of the flight, the marginal connections are important.

I just found British stats that are updated for the LHR-MSY route. https://www.caa.co.uk/Data-and-analysis ... port-data/

April had a load factor of 84.7% with 6,163 pax
May had a load factor of 76.6% with 5,905 pax
June had a load factor of 80.6% with 5,863 pax.

Great start for the route.

For reference, BA's North America load factors were as follows:

April: 83%
May: 82.6%
June: 87.3%

Good April, May and June have a bit to go, but I suspect that's decent for a new route.

Yes, GLO is not currently operating. Corporate Flight Management still owns those planes, so I wouldn't be shocked to see them heading back to the CFM base in Tennessee soon since the contract with GLO has not been renewed. I honestly don't see GLO finding a new aircraft partner anytime soon. It was a nice try on the part of the GLO team, but the demand just wasn't there to be profitable. Load factors of 40% are not going to turn a profit anytime soon.

Could be wrong, but I thought GLO leased the planes themselves and CFM only operated them. Theoretically, they could use the same planes if they found another operator.

In other news...On the av board agenda for tomorrow is an item "Introduction of Special Guests/Special Recognition." Any ideas on what that's about? The last time I saw something like that on the agenda was when BA made its announcement. MT just announced SEA and was rumored to be considering MSY. I doubt it would be for the Frontier announcement.

The announcement is for the new CFO. My friend Carmen has been acting CFO for quite a while.

I'm 99% certain those planes were being leased from CFM, and they also provided the staffing and maintenance for a fee. Sad to say, but GLO is likely never going to fly again. That's the harsh reality of the airline industry.

Hmm I wonder what it is... clearly not cuba and not surprised since all airlines are cutting back on CUBA.

Maybe Mexico City or Amsterdam?

That is not correct. "All" airlines are not cutting back on Cuba. Many have, but others have sought those rights dropped by other airlines.

Further, the article specifically says the director stated no to Cuba and indicates it is not Mexico City.

Also, AMS would never come before CDG, IMO.

Ok not all airlines but there was clearly over expansion into Cuba... where in the article does he clearly state its not mexico city? he alludes to not affirming it but he doesnt say its not mexico city either. i dont think its mexico city but he didn't say it wasn't mexico city either.

BTW clearly not Cuba means not Cuba so not sure what your going on about?

Also you know every airlines thoughts since you say Amsterdam would never come before CDG? A route to amsterdam was proposed in early 2000s. it never materialized but its not that much a stretch. I suggest KLM and Amsterdam because its a skyteam partner with Delta.

Your comment was no Cuba because airlines are cutting back, if you meant also because the director said no, you didn't say that. That is what I was "going on about."

I also said "indicates" Mexico City, meaning he didn't confirm but seem to indicate (or allude) to that fact.

Also, I never said I know every airlines [sic] thoughts and, in fact, I said "in my opinion." AF is also a partner with DL and AF-KLM are in the same holding company, so that fact doesn't weigh in favor of KLM. My point is that I find it unlikely that AMS has greater O&D than CDG. DL/AF/KLM/AZ won't start the flight for connector-purposes only, they'll want stable O&D.

AF is also a SkyTeam and JV partner with DL. And DL just announced it is buying 10% of AF/KLM Group (the holding company that controls AF and KLM)....

My guess is one of 4 things.

A new Vacation Express destination in the Caribbean, a new Canadian destination (YUL with AC or YYC with WS), or least likely is MT to MAN or Y4 to GDL.

We'll see what transpires over the next few weeks.

Positioning New Orleans as a hub for flights to Latin America? "That's not the type of effort that's in the works now," he said.

How about adding flights to Mexico City? "It's a hub to many destinations as you're moving south," he said, "so I think if you're planning to grow south, it's a market that has to be looked at."

To me this indicates that MEX is being framed as a destination that will be added sooner or later.

Although I don't think MSY will ever reach MIA or IAH proportions, I think there is an opportunity to eventually be a secondary Latin American/Caribbean focus city for an airline - perhaps NK or WN. MEX, CUN, MBJ, NAS, and SAP would make for a nice operation.

In other news, WN is growing slightly in the latest schedule release. While the weekdays are pretty much the same, Sundays will see PIT, RDU, CMH, and IND as well as additional flights to PHX, MCI, STL, MDW, BWI, and LAS for a peak total of 65 departures.

Funnily enough, AMS was MSY's first ever scheduled transatlantic flight.

But very much doubt we'll be seeing it again any time soon.

Proposed by whom? Certainly nothing concrete.

I'm probably the only person who thinks it's only AM to MEX. I do not see it being anything else as of yet. AM has been in talks for quite some time with MSY and they've been here before. I see it being a 4-5x a week on a 190. Just my opinion.
