I think NK would be most likely for that, probably 3 or 4 weekly and in combination with another route such as MCI. That being said, they just announced MSY-EWR/BOS so I don't think it's top priority.

I remember that CO was the first to restore full capacity after Katrina. It's historically been a strong route, but the combination of cheap oil, more nonstop routes that overfly Houston, and fewer banks at IAH are taking a toll on the route.

It's high, but it was never their #1.

I'm glad to see the airport throwing some money into the ring to expand the Vets/I-10 interchange project even further than what the state was proposing. Moving the fire station and expanding to 5 lanes north and southbound will help substantially with traffic flow issues. Getting the traffic lights timed properly will also be critical. Here's how I could see it working.

First set of green lights would be Loyola southbound from Kenner at both I-10 West and East and Vets intersection. Traffic can turn left to I-10, go straight to airport, or turn on Vets. (30 seconds)
Southbound Loyola at westbound I-10 intersection light turns red.
I-10 West lights turn green while lights remain green at I-10 East and Vets intersections to keep traffic moving from I-10 West to the airport connector road or Vets. (45 seconds)
I-10 West lights turn red. Soutbound Loyola at I-10 East turn red. Southbound Loyola at Vets remains green.
I-10 East lights turn green. Traffic can go left toward Kenner stopping at red light at I-10 West intersection or go right toward airport connector or Vets. (25 seconds)
I-10 East lights turn red. Southbound Loyola lights at Vets turn red.
Northbound Airport/Loyola lights turn green at all intersections. Traffic can turn left or right onto Vets, right onto I-10 East, left onto I-10 West, or straight on Loyola into Kenner. (45 seconds)
Northbound Airport/Loyola at Vets turns red. Northbound Loyola at I-10 East and West remains green.
Westbound Vets turns green for left turn, straight, and right turn. Traffic can continue onto I-10 or into Kenner. (25 seconds)
Westbound Vets turns red.
Eastbound Vets turns green for left turn, straight, and right turn. Traffic can continue onto I-10 or into Kenner. (20 seconds)
Eastbound Vets turns red. Northbound Loyola at I-10 East and West turns red.
Cycle starts over.

The goal would be to keep the entire traffic light cycle to as close to 180 seconds as possible. That seems to be the optimal cycle length for saturated flow intersections from what I've read.

what surprised me with all the additions the airport is proposing the airport expects the traffic flow to be at a D level in the pm hours. and an e if only dotd projects are done... so this extra money is basically to maintain the same level of service in the area... in other words its a must. not redoing other intersections on veterans is critical too .. otherwise the bottleneck moves .. specifically veterans and airport blvd

Will Frontier or Southwest ever serve MSY nonstop from CVG in the future? Neither Frontier or Southwest have yet served MSY nonstop from CVG, but Frontier or Southwest could add nonstop service to CVG from MSY in the future.

True and an oversight on my part, but it looks to be all of 11 DL roundtrips in the spring with nothing scheduled beyond March, so it will be short-lived. I'm not saying that it will necessarily happen, but it does leave room for someone like NK, F9 or WN to enter the market.

I think there may be some room in SEA, but I think DL is the most likely to make it permanent/more than 1-2x weekly. WN hasn't shown that much interest in SEA, although there has been some adds. NK and F9 aren't too big in SEA (not that they couldn't do it, but just don't think it is likely).

BA's 5x weekly service officially began today. Great to see service increase to LHR. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BAW225

Airport had a nice press release as well. Sounds like BA is pleased with the performance of the route so far according to the article.

Unlikely at this time. WOW has a grand total of 3 A330-300 aircraft, and Icelandair only has 4 767-300 aircraft. Those are the only aircraft in the Icelandic carriers fleet that could feasibly serve MSY based on aircraft range. I'm certain there are more lucrative markets those aircraft are flying to right now. Our best bet for another carrier would likely be Norwegian from either CDG or LGW. Even that is probably a couple of years away at a minimum.

Not quite.

KEF-DFW launched with a 752, and it's longer than KEF-MSY would be.

Wow!...I figured that would be pushing the range limit of a fully loaded 752 when factoring in typical headwinds from KEF. I believe the range of a 752 is around 3900 nm in ideal conditions. These routes are around 3300 nm, so there is some leeway. I do wonder if they have to restrict loads or do fuel stops when headwinds are really strong between KEF and DFW. I'd fly an Icelandair 752 if they offered it. KEF is supposed to absolutely stunning.

They will need some additional long-haul aircraft if they keep this expansion up.

^^^Comparing the old and new terminals... I know the new one will seem smaller due to distance, but it's still hard to imagine there being 15 gates on each concourse big enough for the larger narrowbodies when you comparing to existing concourse D which only has 12 gates or C with 14.

I posted in the WN thread, but I'll repeat here in case it was missed: I'm not seeing any major changes for MSY in the latest release, however there are a lot of Sunday additions, giving Sundays 9 more departures than weekdays. In addition to Sunday-only RDU, PIT, IND, CMH, SMF, and SJC, there's a 2nd PHX, MCI, SAT, a 3rd STL and DEN, 4th BNA. That's partially offset by two fewer HOU and one fewer DAL on the weekends for a total of 65 Sunday departures and 56 weekday.

I wonder if they will be able to handle 65 departures on only 6 gates in B or if they will add another temporarily.

Technically not for free...WN would have to pay a gate usage fee to the airport each time they use one of those gates at the end of B.

Also, found this cool video from NK highlighting the MSY operations and staff. NK may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's good to see them have success at MSY. 4 new destinations start on Nov. 9th (MSP, BOS, EWR, and TPA)

Spirit just announced expansion in Honduras.

Was really hoping that that would've included MSY. I'm almost somewhat surprised that they haven't jumped on it, considering the success that they've found in both markets.

As that Choice Aire showed us last year at this time, Honduran demand (though perhaps lessened) is still very much there.

Choice Aire only had like three relatively full flights around the holidays. The rest went out with like 30/40 people. I heard from a couple of sources that they were bleeding cash on the MSY runs.

Didn't they add a frequency though? Why would they have done that, if they were bleeding?

The extra frequency was never added. The route only lasted a few months before the entire operation went kaput.

I think NK would do much better than Choice on the MSY-SAP route. They have the name recognition, would probably be less than half the price (IIRC Choice was $500 for a roundtrip), connections in MSY to points north and a network that makes them more reliable than an infrequent charter service, even given NK's reliability issues. For example if a flight gets canceled, you have the option of routing through IAH or FLL on NK and vice-versa, if a SAP-IAH or FLL flight gets canceled, some pax could be routed through MSY.

Agree on all points except that one... why on Earth would they launch an int'l route for that?

Heck, wouldn't be shocked if they were twice the price.

NK fares for nonstops FLL/IAH-SAP are routinely below $200.00. Not saying that it would always be that cheap, but NK rarely charges a premium, even when it offers the only nonstop in the market. It prefers to fill the planes with low fares and make money on fees. We're not talking BA or CM here. The same could be said of WN and the routes it recently added from MSY - it's usually cheaper to take the nonstop than a connection, although they are less concerned with fees and more with full planes and high utilization. Not to mention, there are also incentives associated with new routes.

Sure, if you want to leave on a Tuesday and do a double-connect including an overnight stay.

I've priced out FLL/IAH-SAP quite a few times on them, and usually a 1stop with the most efficient layover, for 2wks out, is in the $500-600 range BEFORE fees.

Sure you can get the $200 fares, but they usually go something like IAH-MSY-FLL-(overnight)-SAP, unless you book them several months out.

Perhaps during the holidays and summer the low fares are harder to find, but I see a ton of sub $200 fares for nonstops. You can book FLL-SAP-FLL for $175 less than two weeks from now without a weekend stay and I see some dates as low as 135. Most VFR travelers are booking more than two weeks out anyway and the main point is that NK is not charging higher fares than the competition for these kinds of routes and their nonstops are usually priced cheaper than connections.

I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere in this thread, but would anyone mind sharing the how many more gates the new terminal will have than the old one. Anyone know m how large of a plane the intl expansion will be able to handle.

Last time I saw anything official, it was 15 gates per main concourse and 6 jetways for the international expansion, though the effective gate count there might be lower (probably 5). The international expansion is capable of handling a couple of wide bodies, including the biggest (though no double jetway for the 380) and of course all of the gates can handle most any narrowbody or some combination of the two. Some of the gates may be for arrivals or departures only.

i do have another question as well in regards to charter flights. the airport has said they would keep terminal D in current airport for charter flights/ if thats the case then will Vacation Express use terminal d for their flights and not the new airport?

Is Signature and Atlantic moving to the current terminal side?

Where will the Saints leave from in the new configuration?

Thanks. I'm assuming those 6 gates will be CUTE.
Interesting that they chose to go with fewer gates even though I understand that traffic has been consistently growing. Hopefully they've included the possibility for a few seamless expansions, just in case.

the current airport has plenty of gates its just poorly designed for todays travel needs. So yeah I do think the new airport will feel much more crowded than the current for this very reason.

i dont see why the current locations would need to change since they arent in the footprint of the new airport terminal

I’m definitely the last person in this thread to know, but I doubt Delta or Southwest would go for that.

Pretty sure they've officially settled on 5, for the international concourse.

Looks like Spirit is expanding again! MSY-CMH 3x weekly.

Will be interesting to see the schedule. G4 will be flying to LCK Monday and Friday and WN to CMH on Sunday. At least for a month or two there will be 6 weekly mainline flights - huge amount of capacity for the market.

Schedule is CMH-MSY-MCO-MSY-CMH Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. So there will be two NK flights to MCO on those days. Since MKE was rumored to be the next add along with CMH, I wonder if they'll do MKE-MSY-MCO the other four days of the week.
