What I hate about the LUS 321s is that they don't have adjustable headrests. It might not seem like much, but it does for someone who flies almost every week. Leaning to the left or right on a headrest keeps you from looking stupid and having your head fall forward and wake up :)

The LUS 321s are getting upped to 190 seats and power at every seat.

According to an internal memo,

This is a full retrofit to include new seats with tablet holders, AC outlets, USB ports, new lavatories, larger overhead bins, LED lighting, Wi-Fi connectivity, adding closets and galleys if needed.
Boeing’s Space Bins are part of the retrofit on the 737s. All 737's and A321's will lose the in seat monitors and will be up graded to have high speed Wifi and allow passengers access to free movies and TV shows. Currently there are no plans to remove seatback IFE from the A319s that have it installed today.

14 Air Whiskey CR2s are now flying United Express lines out of ORD; N408AW, N409AW, N419AW, N420AW, N423AW, N424AW, N425AW, N429AW, N431AW, N435AW, N436AW, N438AW, N464AW and N466AW. N420AW is in United Express livery. 44 remaining ZW CR2s flying American Eagle lines.
Does anyone have the official transition timeline?

If HA and DL can put 189 and 192 seats in their A321s respectively, I'm not surprised at AA doing 190.

Why did AA renumber 13 LUS A321s, #970-982?

"By the end of the year" is the general consensus.

Nice to see CRJ-200s leaving! The more the better!

The original fleet numbers of those aircraft matched some s80 fleet numbers.

I don't think so.

Envoy, who has stored E140s at SJT for several years, are placing a good number of them back into service, partially, I believe, for covering Whisky routes. A few E140s are already back in service.

Piedmont appears to be replacing some CRJ flying, especially on AA's p2p routes.

I would assume there will still be 16F. Take the existing LUS configuration and add a set of three seats at the L2 door. For the existing LAA configuration it gets a little weirder, the pitch gets adjusted throughout the cabin and you would have to add a row of three in front of the mid-lav and also add a whole additional row of seats.

That makes 300 737-800s now, not counting the 1 MAX aircraft on property. Quite an impressive number. Just wish they weren't ripping out the IFE and cramming in more seats.

There are only a handful of 738 deliveries left. Seats and whatnot were already ordered long before the decision was made, and these planes will likely be among the last to be retrofitted. With 300 in the fleet it is going to take awhile.

I think AA is making a mistake with the retrofits, but that's just my opinion. DL will have a better domestic product when all is said and done.

The only major difference, ultimately, will be AVOD PTVs - and that will only, I suspect, really be a difference relative to Delta and JetBlue. Otherwise, AA's domestic product will end up being similar if not identical to competitors. Personally, I continue to believe that going to a streaming IFE solution is absolutely the right business decision. And with respect to legroom, there's no question that those 737s will be tight, but I'll reserve final judgement on comfort until I've actually sat in one of those seats, and in any event, if the market reaction isn't drastically negative, I wouldn't be surprised to see AA's competitors - including Delta - match. (After all, it's worth noting that, even after this coming reconfiguration, AA's A321s will still have fewer seats than Delta's A321s.)

Maybe so but I doubt people are buying tickets on domestic flights based on whether or not the aircraft has in seat IFE. The high speed Wifi and the free movies and TV shows will still be available. AA just needs to train their audience to watch the Free movies and TV with their own device. Saves a lot of money on maintenance and ear buds. Also frees up under seat space from those bulky IFE boxes.

Especially when one can go buy an Amazon Fire 7 for $50, let alone the 77% of U.S. adults who own a smart phone. I'd rather watch something on my own device vs. a seat back display.

From the announcement in Sept,

"The Legacy US A321s are scheduled to start being retrofitted in 2019, ahead of the Legacy American A321s, to get power at every seat onto those planes as soon as possible." Shouldn't take 4 years to finish up the LUS A321's if they are concentrating on those first.

It's nice that the LUS A321s will get power. If MQ could get power for the E175s, that'd be great.

The Legacy AA A321's all came with IFE and power. The retrofit of the LAA 321's will be removing IFE not adding power. The AA web site is where the info is on when this will be complete. As soon as possible does not mean this will be in a timely manner. And really 2 years to start this project.

Assuming they'll start in mid-January/early February, that is only 15 months away. AA is pretty efficient when it comes to take planes out to paint/mod so I'd suspect that 3 planes will be out at a time for the power mod which should allow them to do about 65-70 planes a year.

OK say you go with Jan/Feb of 2019, just how is this "as soon as possible"? Your 'Assuming' could also be 26-27 months away so once again, "as soon as possible".

The power is a nice addition to the LUS A321's, kind of a waste though to rip the PTV's out of the LAA 738's and A321's. Anyone know if the Transcon A321's will be touched at all?

While I agree it’s not ideal, the idea is that the A321T serves premium heavy routes only. Whereas the LAA A319s will only be on international routes primarily from Miami to Latin America which falls in line with the memo stating that international will retain PTVs.

You can look at the AA Cargo Timetable (https://www.aacargo.com/ship/schedules.html) to find out what subfleet you're flying on; for example, 38A is the 738 with PTVs and 38D is the 738 without.

I see no change to the 320s,as far as I know it was always going to be 48 at end of year and both of the other fleet plans I have confirm that. Does show three more S80s hanging around though.

On another note, average fuel price is up about 5-6 cents in the new forecast.

THANKS for that! Look at the CR2s disappear!

All those Air Wisconsin pilots will be flying for United express. American Airlines’ loss really.

I don't think so. Crappy CRJ-200s to replaced with Envoy E140/E145s. An upgrade, actually.

I think AA is making a mistake with the retrofits, but that's just my opinion. DL will have a better domestic product when all is said and done.

I agree.

But at the end of the day, I'm guessing pricing and schedule will be the biggest factors for people buying tickets.

Either way you go - I think consistency is the most important part. For UA, it's kind of annoying how you might get steaming IFE (free) on DTW-ORD, and then only be able to pay for DirectTV IFE on ORD-SFO. I can appreciate AA trying to standardize the experience on their 737s.

I like the idea that it will free up leg room with the IFE box being removed from under the seats. Those IFE boxes take up a lot of under seat space. I was on a A-321 the other day that had about 20 screens INOP. I'm sure the maintenance costs on those systems could be spent in better places.
