A 763ER (N387AM) has already headed that way last week. 8 more to go before year end.

That would be correct. Not the mass 21 plane retirement in one day, but quit a few.

ORD will be 767 and 777 free on international routes next year. Just a few daily from DFW/MIA for Deep South America planes that would otherwise sit on the ground all day.

JFK also will continue to see the 767, at least on the daily AA 44/45 JFK-CDG-JFK, and JFK-MIA-MIA at least once daily. And of course the 777 to LHR multiple times daily.

That's an international 2002 build aircraft. Are they retiring those so soon as well?

Yea, that was my understanding as well, 2002 build international, which made the routing from TUL to ROW so surprising. It had just previously had three cancellations out of STT, then went straight to TUL for 21 days, then a test hop, then straight to ROW. Maybe it's at ROW for a paint touch up after some kind of maintenance at TUL. I'll watch it for a few weeks to see if it departs ROW.

Maybe it's there for wi-fi installation? Though honestly I have no idea what city AA is doing that at.

Does anyone know if these two ~15 year old 757's were due for a heavy maintenance check? I know AA seems to base their 757 retirements not based on a plane's age or total cycles, but whether or not it's due for a HM check (C or D).

If they were, they're probably going to be junked soon since nobody wants 757's with winglets these days (not economical for freight).

Maybe a 737 MAX 8 will get a OneWorld livery, seeing how many 738s have it.

Personally, I hope an A321neo and 787-9 get it.

Looks like I was wrong - N174AA just went to VQQ, I'm guessing to be hacked to bits and become a freighter:

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N174AA

I thought that wingleted 757's were not desirable freighters - I guess not!

Also, this is more evidence that 757's and 767's built between 1999-2004 are undesirable as pax aircraft- must be bad parts associated with the interior or control cables (these are all ripped out and sent to the landfill during the freighter "conversion"/destruction process).

More likely these are the most desirable for freighters since they are fairly young for 757/767s. If a pax airline is planning on retiring the fleets anyways can be smart to get rid of the young(er) birds while they are still worth something in the 2nd hand market.

This changed fairly recently as there are now STCs available for winglet fitted 757 freighters... so far I think around 10 aircraft are in service as freighters with winglets. Operating for; Asia Pacific Airlines, ASL Airlines, Blue Dart Aviation, Cargojet Airways & DHL - at least according to https://www.planespotters.net/production-list/Boeing/757/757-200

N606AA is 2 years older than the other 2 757s being retired, so it's not surprising.

I'm still confused about why they seem to be retiring 2002-build internationally-configured aircraft.

American Airlines sold 10 young Boeing 757s for Freighter conversion . Customer is either SF Airlines or YTO Airlines with Boeing acting as a middle man .

A win win for all involved as the frames will fly for many more years instead of being scrapped for parts

I don't know the regs, but I would say probably the domestic LAA757s and ex-US/HP 757s that are due for retirement by the end of this year. Or maybe other domestic 757s that left the fleet already, I'm not so sure. American has now less than 50 757s left, and the plan is to have just 34 of them by the end of this year: 24 LAA International 757s (JFK-Europe and MIA-South America routes) and 10 ex-US International 757s that will be based out of PHX for Hawaii flights. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm thinking regarding the 757 fleet. As of early 2018 the only domestic flights that will still see the 757 will be JFK-MIA-JFK and PHX-Hawaii routes, and maybe BOS-MIA. Because I don't think that LAX, CLT, PHL, ORD and DFW will still see the 757 in 2018 unless of course there is a last minute equipment sub.
I recently flew on N188AN from CDG to JFK, very nice aircraft. I was seated in seat 10F which was very comfy. The airplane was nicely refurbished with the new paint and the new seats. One of my nicest flights on the 757.

I could see 757s working ORD-MIA next year, from late March through early April, to deal with increased loads during spring break. I've seen spring break schedules with 752s, 763s, and even 772s, displacing many of the 738s.

The new MAXes will help in that regard. The INTL configured 176 seaters aren't the best for trunk domestic routes.

That agrees with the list at https://sites.google.com/site/newameric ... 8-standard

I wonder which will be the last to be repainted (not counting N921NN/3KG which I seem to recall is to be kept as a retrojet in light of it being the last delivery in bare metal, presumably with new titles in the same fashion as the others?)

N905NN/3JP kept the 1950s American titles, so I think N921NN/3KG might keep the classic ones too.

Wilmington Trust doesn't own or lease airplanes. The airplanes are leased from Infinity Aviation; the terms for their return were negotiated in the bankruptcy process four years ago.

Wilmington Trust is Owner Trustee. Infinity Aviation MSN 32398 LLC is the owner. If Wilmington Trust, Wells Fargo, US Bank, et al had exposure to all of the airplanes they registered, they would have been bankrupt a long time ago. The "registered owner" on the USCAR may not be the actual owner. AerCap leases a lot of airplanes, but as a foreign entity, the airplanes are placed in trust with a US trust company.

Wouldn't it be the other way around? The 75H is the new LUS Hawaii configuration with Main Cabin Extra and the 75E is the old LUS transatlantic configuration.

Until this recent wave of 757 retirements, AA had 48 757s in service: 5 LUS 75Es, 10 LUS 75Hs, 26 LAA 75Ls, and 7 LAA 75Ds (two still in the old 22/160 configuration and five in the newer 24/160 configuration). Of the five aircraft that have been retired in the past week, 5DV, 5EA, and 5EH were 75Ds (24/160), 5EJ (75D 22/160), and 5FR was a 75L. So these retirements don't effect the LUS fleet, but lower the overall fleet count to 43 aircraft, including: 5 75Es, 10 75Hs, 25 75Ls, and 3 75Ds (2 24/160, 1 22/160).

With the above posted MD-80 retirements the MD-80 fleet count now stands at 49.

The 763 fleet stands at 30 a/c (24 28/181—new J, and 6 30/188—old NGBC J).

Wouldn't it be the other way around? The 75H is the new LUS Hawaii configuration with Main Cabin Extra and the 75E is the old LUS transatlantic configuration.

Apparently they're retiring the 75H and putting 75Es on the Hawaii routes and 75Ls on the Atlantic routes: http://viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com ... s-unhappy/.

With the recent cuts at JFK, the second daily flight to CDG and the daily flight to MAN, at least a couple of International 757s will be available to be reassigned on other routes. Because, although the 75H fleet is now being retired, the 75L fleet is not leaving anytime soon. I believe that JFK-MAD will be downgraded back to the 757, correct me if I'm wrong about that. I know BOS-CDG is seasonal, summer only.
