Is LZR Finnair's 16th A321 in use and three more to come? A321 has become their most common aircraft type.

Budapest Aircraft Service via Airlink are currently operating a PSO service between Helsinki and Savonlinna in Finland - this PSO ends on 22-Dec-2017
I understand that the Finnish Transport Agency issued a PSO notice in the summer requesting bids for the route to begin 08-Jan-2018 and last about 2 years but nothing much seems to have happened apart from issuing a few documents asking for bids. I did however notice that the Savonlinna local Government agreed about a week ago to come up with some of the cash that would be needed for a PSO

Does anyone know what's happening with this route after 22-Dec-2017, when (or if) an announcement will be made as to who has won the new PSO, and also when the new operator will start flying ?

Not really surprised by this, CPH is very popular for AY's Chinese passengers.

Good for CPH. If Beijing Capital Airlines starts the 3x weekly PEK-CPH service, there will be up to 15 weekly flights between CPH and PEK, operated by Air China, Beijing Capital Airlines, and SAS.

Is Air China also interested in launching flights to HEL? Air China, as well as Beijing Capital Airlines, participated in the negotiations on air transport agreement between Finland and China that were held on 20-21 April in Helsinki. Limitations regarding the number of the operating airlines were removed as well.

That's never going to happen. CAAC do only with few exceptions, allows one chineese carrier pr. route.
The application is for designation. Let's se who get it.

Yes that's true, an application doesn't always mean the flights come to be. Doesn't CAAC however usually accept applications from Air China considering it's state-owned?

Also one shouldn't forget that a couple of months ago CAAC released a draft regulation that would essentially get rid of the "one route, one airline" policy on some routes depending on the state of bilaterals.

The CPH numbers are only for about 2 weeks of operation, and ARN about 6 week. While the HEL is for 3 months.

Budapest Aircraft Service won the competitive bidding and will, from 8th of January onwards, continue to operate the PSO in 2018-2020. The town council of Savonlinna will subsidize the route with 1.26 million euros per year and the state has prepared one million in their 2018 budget proposal. However NextJet has sent a claim for rectification to the Transport Agency and it's not yet sure if they will meet in court or not. BASe's offer for the three years was 6.6 million euros while NextJet's offer was more expensive by 71 000€ per year due to preparing for higher fuel prices.

I calculated the capacity on DEL-ARN and I got the load factor of 60% (capacity: 10,752 seats) and for DEL-CPH 52% (3,584 seats). On 18 Sep 2017, Copenhagen Airport noted the load factor of more than 80% and Air India expects to handle around 40,000 passengers on the route in 2017. I must have calculated something wrong :scratchchin: Or is the number of passengers much worse than expected?

Probably never. Its the reason why they have so few delays in snowy conditions. As those jetways dont have any wheels they are able to move in any condition. But now with the newer ones its going to be interesting how their experience with the new jetways will be

I think there are warming systems and maybe some special features installed in new jetways due to snowy and cold conditions. The first new jetway has already experienced winter and Finavia hasn't stated any problems. If Finavia will replace the fixed jetways with newer ones, they might be similar to ones at Oslo.

Ryanair will add 1x weekly LPP-BGY from 28MAR18 onwards. Not a new route.

Discussions for other possible routes may start after the countries that play their 2018 FIFA World Cup matches in St Petersburg are revealed in December. St Petersburg hotels will be full and some tourists will be accommodated in Lappeenranta and bussed to St Petersburg. LPP is the closest EU airport to St Petersburg with a distance of about 200 km.

Most likely many airlines will not get the permission to fly to LED next summer and will use LPP instead.

Yes, loads of Italians will go to Russia for the world cup, oh wait! they didn't qualify!! but I know lots of russians would just travel to LPP and fly from there to sunny destinations.

Yes, like I said, BGY is not a new destination from LPP and will also be used by Russian tourists like years before.

Personally I don't really care about football, I was just repeating what I read about the subject. Visit Russia and the city of Lappeenranta have signed a partnership agreement on marketing regarding the games.

This highlighted sentence from a website written in poor English is quite telling  :

First, Lappeenranta is Europe. This circumstance for some European fans can be a weighty argument. According to the director of the Union of National and International Travel Agencies Alexander Gorokhov, many of the potential football tourists, especially Finns and Scandinavians, are easier and more convenient to come to St. Petersburg from Lappeenranta. As the expert notes, it can be "in general new categories of tourists and fans who, perhaps, in other conditions will not come to us." Probably, someone will not want to spend the night in the territory of the Russian Federation - for reasons of security or for "political reasons".

Secondly, the city has its own airport, which is expected to receive regular flights by the summer of 2018, and on the border between the Russian Federation and Suomi even think about opening special lanes for rapid passage of border controls.

No a new airport in Sälen on the Swedish side, close to Trysil wich is on the Norwegian side.

You can read about it here:

Well the airport project is sometimes referred to as Sälen-Trysil airport but the old/current name is Rörbäcksnäs/Mobergskölen flygplats..
You are correct though that it is an expansion even though it will more or less be like a completely new airport.

Last year Finnair flew an A350 with almost 300 business executives, investors, entrepreneurs and journalists from SFO to HEL for Slush, one of the biggest startup events in the world.

It seems like this year AY will be replaced by a Victor A340 VIP with just 100 seats. An upgrade over last year's offering that's for sure. Flight has been sold out.

There are some pictures of the aircraft on the website:

https://www.flyvictor.com/en-gb/slush2017/#/

Flights were probably not cheap. I think all planes should have this kind of a layout. ;)

I bet the startup scene in Helsinki would be very glad if AY decided to make SFO a year-round service.

British Airways to grow by 28% at Gatwick after buying Monarch slots

“These slots will be used by the Group’s airlines, primarily British Airways, enabling them to grow their presence at the airport and launch new destinations and add extra frequencies.”

Some of the new services are likely to be direct replacements for Monarch links, but others will be used to expand its worldwide routes — a move that will provide more competition for Norwegian, which has Gatwick as its main UK base.

independent.co.uk

Hopefully, the Nordic airports will now get more connections to London with BA. I could see BA adding flights to HEL from LGW or Finnair expanding in Gatwick with a direct link to HEL as AY soon serves Gatwick with flights from Ivalo and Kittilä. Gatwick is BA's second hub so AY and BA could offer their customers lots of Oneworld connections. Finnair can surely compete with Norwegian.

HAV starts today, POP started yesterday. ;)

Finavia refreshed their website yesterday as well, and it's just like I feared it to be. Perhaps it's an improvement on mobile devices, but on desktop it just appears as a typical modern, dumbed-down site with a focus on touch screen devices.

Shouldn't the HEL-POP route be operated with A330? I'm happy if A350 will be used on the route instead.

The new look of Finavia's website is pretty good. I wonder, why doesn't Finavia show main unserved routes and annual route statistics on the website while Swedavia, Avinor and Copenhagen Airport (cph.dk) does.

Norwegian has now carried 1,000,000 passengers to Finnish Lapland this year.

And
Qatar Airways now operates to HEL with 305-seated A330-300, the second daily flight with A320 will be added on 14 Dec 2017.

It was the millionth passenger at Lapland airports this year, not Norwegian's millionth passenger in Lapland.

Flew back home yesterday on SAS ARN-LAX. Was a light load with only 105 pax onboard. It was quite a comfortable ride even in Y with so few pax!

Havana got A330 instead of A350, at least the first flight.

When the expansion at OSL opened, Bjørn Kjos said that DY would be starting flights to Seattle, but there seems to have been no news since. Have there been any updates regarding that?

I haven't found anything but I think it's pretty likely that DY will commence flights from Oslo to Seattle as well as to Chicago.

Finnair is the 5th biggest A350 operator in terms of departing seats in 2017:

Qatar Airways: 4,058,874 seats
Cathay Pacific: 3,707,760
Singapore Airlines: 2,529,747
Vietnam Airlines: 2,260,038
Finnair: 1,683,831

anna.aero (OAG Schedules Analyser)
. . .

Do you know, which cities will SAS serve with A350s in the future? At least I know they will be used on North American routes. As A350s bring more capacity, where will be SAS' next new long-haul destinations? Seattle, Seoul, Manila, Johannesburg, Toronto or Vancouver perhaps?

AY865 HEL-GOT had to divert to Åbo (Turku) today due to a smell of smoke in the cabin.

Our flight AY865 HEL-GOT had to divert to Turku, as smell of smoke was detected in the aircraft. The plane landed safely and passengers were evacuated with slides

DY4097 ARN-SFT had a similar issue, returned to ARN after a smoke alarm in the cargo hold.
