Remaining AA MD-80 Routes

As the number of AA MD80's has dwindled significantly in the past few years I have attempted to compile the remaining AA MD-80 routes using a combination of FR24 and the flightboard app. According to wikipedia 57 MD-80's remain (17 MD-82's and 40 MD-83's) and they will most likely be gone by the end of 2018.

All of the following have been flown by MD-80's in the last week: (I may have missed some, please let me know if you are aware of other remaining MD-80 routes.

Some notes:
The longest flight is ORD-SLC which is 1,250 miles. Shortest is DFW-AUS at 190 miles. Only remaining international routes that I could find were DFW-YYZ/ZIH. Almost all the MD-80's are concentrated in DFW, in previous threads on the subject some posters have said ORD will be the last remaining MD-80 base but that seems unlikely given the relatively few MD-80 flights remaining out of ORD.

I wonder if the ORD MKE flight was an equipment swap. AFAIK ORD-MKE is usually only CR2s.

DFW-ABQ has seen a decrease in the presence of the S80. Only 1-2 flights a day are the type, the rest being 738s or Mesa CRJ9s.

At some point around the end of 2Q 2017, another 20 will be retired.

Even routes like ORD-STL that basically used to be all S80's is now mainly E175's. A319's, and 738's with a S80 thrown in there every few flights or so. The end unfortunately is near.

CVG I heard was getting AA mainline back for CVG-DFW and I heard MD-80s will be on that route.

I think you're right. I've flown that route before and it was the CRJ2. It's only 70 sum odd miles flying distance.

Actually I was incorrect about that one. It was a typo on my part. Looking at the schedule it does seem to be all CRJ-200. There is still however regular MD-80 flights between MKE and DFW.

DFW-OMA has gone from 1x to 3x daily S80 within the past month.

Is there an offical retirement schedule for the AA MD-80s? I have read several different retirement dates for the aircraft, anywhere from the end of 2017 to well into 2018.

Where are you getting TPA from? AFAIK, they have been gone OFFICIALLY since mid-August.

Granted, a few have popped in but I think they are subs.

Nice map btw. Good to see AA is still using the MD-80 on some longer sectors. I myself have very good memories of travelling from Portland via Dallas to Philadelphia all the way on the MD-80. That was the reason of my visit to the United States three years ago. And the KLM MD-11 taking me there

Sad to see the MD-80's leave. Enjoy them while it is still possible.

DL alone operates well over 100 MD-80s (116 atm) as well as a number of smaller airlines that continue to operate the type.

You both are correct, looking at todays departures I see at least 1 MD-80 to DFW and 1 MD-80 to ORD. The TUS-ORD flight is the longest MD-80 flight in the network.

E175 is a giant cost savings versus Super 80. Old timers agonized over these networks. The gain in efficiency vs 20 years ago is remarkable. Seems like a win win for the company and the passenger.

I'm happy I get one on ORD-DEN on 02/15. I love the -80 and will be sad to see them retire, but I'm going to enjoy them while they're still around.

I've flown that route many times. It used to be ~10x daily, all S80 with a 757 thrown in there depending on the time of the year. Now it's down to 5x or 6x daily with smaller aircraft. Sad.

A decade ago, STL had roughly 40 daily S80 flights. Virtually all of its mainline except for MIA was S80s, so STL saw S80s to something like BOS, DCA, DFW, LAX, LGA, MCO, ORD, SEA and SFO.

DFW-OKC should be the shortest at 175 miles. Not DFW-AUS. Or should I say "mile's" - since no one knows proper punctuation anymore?

There are rumors that GSP, which is currently all RJ, will see the MD-80 on the GSP-DFW route this April! I'm hearing different reasons. One is to cover the high demand, and the other is due to mesa flying their planes on some other routes. Either way I would love to see the MD-80s here even for just a short time! They have not flown that route since the early 1990s. Can anyone confirm?

Good catch on RSW, and I think we both may have missed LAS. I remembered SNA but talked myself out of it because the S80 can't do SNA-STL. Was it westbound only?

My sources have been dead on with the MD80 draw down. ORD is where it should be as is DFW. The non ORD/DFW routes will disappear soon. RDU, MSP, TUS, and a few others will be in the long run.

Also, schedules past 4.1 are placeholders, so don't book a flight expecting a MadDog.

The ORD hub offers nothing that CLT, PHL, and DFW hubs can't offer for those markets, and they don't have the O&D to make a ORD nonstop worthwhile.

As a side note, AA is also going to be offering MD-80 service on the CHS-DFW route, which parallels the new GSP-DFW mainline service.
