2016 Airport PAX numbers thread

Fri Feb 03, 2017 1:21 am

Hey all, after seeing a few fragmented discussions of 2016 numbers as they trickle out from various airports, I figured it would make sense to make one unified thread where anyone can post/discuss numbers from airports world wide. Should be fun. Mods, I apologize if it has already been posted somewhere, I leave this thread's longevity in your more then capable hands.

Feel free to post everyone!

EDIT: What B752OS said, plus commentary...

BOS: http://www.massport.com/media/419503/12 ... ummary.pdf

2015: 33,449,580
2016: 36,288,042, up 8.5% on the year and by far a record since Massport show their numbers (1998)

Domestic: 29,591,053 up 6.4%
International: 6,587,473, up 19.0%

Surprise this year was Canada with passengers up 27%, some of this was WS's entry into the fray, but it appears significant connections from International flights going around the Canadian flight restrictions particularly for the ME2 (in this case, QR and EK) also are driving the numbers up.

Middle East is now running at 650K passengers for the year and will climb still higher in 2017 as QR is yet to be flying for a full year.
Asia up 31% as CX's numbers have an impact, and HU increased flights. 2017 will see daily CX starting in the middle of the year adding to the potential
Central America up 51% (AM and CM are now settling nicely and have figured out the right capacity levels for their routes, loads are looking better, add in CUN and that's why these numbers are up markedly on the year)
Europe - up 12%, but it's a bit of a basket case mentality here. LH and BA seem to be getting hit, while WW and FI post solid numbers month after month. DY is the clear winner right now with LGW knocking it out of the park in terms of butts on seats. DL - LHR primarily survives on the up front folks, but AMS and CDG are largely solid. of the new entrants in 16 (not called DY) - AB is doing ok (but the bigger story on them is elsewhere), SK is solid on it's Privatair 737. TP has started well too, so lots of optimism for 17, along with VS starting MAN to add to capacity on that route with MT. DL starts seasonal DUB, which will be great as that route has been crying out for additional capacity and EI just don't have it.
For the Caribbean the big story was breaching the 1m passenger mark for the year.

This implies more passengers per plane at ORD by 2%, and at MWD by 4%. Can anyone break down the increase from greater load factors and the increase from bigger airplanes?

ORD: (1 + 0.0131) /( 1 - 0.0086) = 1.02
MDW : (1+ 0.0378) /( 1 - 0.0019) = 1.04

More then double the rate of growth versus O'Hare -- it's only a matter of time before MKE outranks O'Hare in the Chicago-Milwaukee super-region. ;-)

Oh yes. :)

Although, in 2015 ORD grew 9.8%, or roughly the entirety of MKE.

Just think what LAX could do if they had DFWs runways and gates (same for NYC airports)!

A year at MKE is a slow month at ORD.

The LAX numbers are impressive, especially given how much of that is O&D.

So LAX bypassed both Heathrow and O'Hare, did it also surpass Haneda?

In absolute terms, the biggest traffic growth was experienced by DEL (+9.65 M), ICN (+8.35 M), LAX (+5.98 M), DOH (+5.8 M, first 11 months), DXB (+5.64 M), PVG (+5.4 M, first 11 months), and AMS (+5.33 M).

All previous years' figures are the Airports Council International (ACI) numbers sourced from Wikipedia. Numbers in blue (ie. PVG, DEN, CLT, YYZ, PHX) only have data for the first 11 months of 2016 and are thus extrapolated for the full year. I couldn't find data for HND, CAN, CGK, and CTU.

Sad to see how ORD stagnates vs other major airports. It's barely ahead of where it was 12 years ago.

I am surprised to see MIA that flat. I reckon the crisis in LATAM must be hitting the city.

According to Wiki, BOG was 35,768,992.

So I wouldn't be surprised in 2017 GRU is surpassed by BOG as well (like MEX did this year). Shocking for the "hub of Latin America".
