It's amazing how this airport continues to grow. Its a very nice separation between Beijing, which was right on the airport heel.

Did some double checking and those are MEM's numbers through November. They do not include December. They may actually sniff or go over 4,000,000 for the year.

From May, 2016.

Connecting passenger activity is on an 18 percent growth trend in 2016 with 92 percent of connecting passengers on Southwest.

I don't know what that 18 percent growth base numbers are though. So 18% could be small or large. No clue

Have e-mailed ROC's administration for figures. Will post when I hear. 2015 was 2,378,499. ROC is stagnant around 2.3-2.5 million. Sometime in the 00's the airport was approximately 2.9 million.

South Africa's main airports all recorded healthy growth and stabilisation. The top 3 have all crossed thresholds putting them into a next level...JNB passing 20million, CPT passing 10 million, DUR passing 5million:

JNB: 20 721 148 (+3.8%)
CPT: 10 090 418 (+7.3%)
DUR: 5 192 703 (+8.5%)

PLZ: 1 582 889 (-0.1%)
ELS: 806 437 (+18.8%)
GRJ: 738 472 (5.8%)

Sao Paulo has 2 airports, combined they are at 57 million (GRU and CGH), higher than any city in LATAM. Surprised to see Rio/GIG so low, considering there was Olympics last year.

Glad to see Flint's decline for the year was only 3.8%. I'm definitely still worried for them as their service pattern has changed a great deal. But at least traffic numbers didn't absolutely collapse last year.

I've heard of more than a few airports having Decembers which were softer than the full-year trend. The monthly year-over-year comparisons can be tough because of holidays which float. For example in a year when Thanksgiving is very late some of the holiday rush spills into December, then perhaps the next year Thanksgiving is early and the holiday rush is all contained in November. Then your November looks artificially good but December YOY takes an artificial hit.

I don't think 2016 versus 2015 was affected by Thanksgiving difference, but the placement of Christmas and New Years in the week may have made a difference. There was no "weekend between" Christmas and New Years this year and so that may have compacted the travel season and resulted in fewer people traveling. The placement of some holidays like Thanksgiving, Labor Day and Memorial Day doesn't encourage or dampen travel from year to year, just what month it gets recorded in. But the placement of other holidays like Easter, 4th of July and Christmas/New Years can significantly affect travel. When the days work out well or the season is long it encourages more travel, When it's not, the travel period is compressed and some people simply don't travel because demand pushes fares up or there isn't enough time.

PHL numbers were hit by the ongoing AA cuts, especially international
30,155,090 (4,191,631 international)
Total paxs were down just over 4% and international paxs were down just over 8% from 2015

In 2016, PHL had the lowest pax count in 10 years.

I see FRA also seems to have dropped in absolute numbers compared to 2015, whilst most of its direct competitors (especially AMS) grew. Any reason behind this? MUC is slowly catching up to FRA as well.

Could this be due to the fact that more long haul carriers are setting up non stop links to smaller hubs in Germany? Eg. SQ SIN - DUS

FAT!!!

Fresno Yosemite International Airport officials have announced another record year with more than 1.54 million departing and arriving passengers in 2016.

The milestone year represents a 10-percent increase in travelers served in 2016 compared to 2015 and outperforms the previous 2014 record by nearly 100,000 passengers.

Int'l passengers were up 21%.

FRA does not have many low cost carriers and LH is quite a conservative airline; they have even chopped some routes even in China. Somehow FRA seems stuck.

AMS on the other hand seems a way more "dynamic" environment (Transavia, Vueling, easyJet, Norwegian, Ryanair...) and KLM is in quite a big expansion mode in both short and long haul. Also Amsterdam is a major tourism destination, and with American or Chinese tourism in record numbers in Europe they probably benefit more directly than FRA from this influx.

Good thread.

BTV: +3.6% for the fiscal year to date.

From the minutes of the BTV airport commission:

Still the Baltimore/Washington Metro busiest airport in terms of passengers. NICE!

MCO/MIA dejavu from that post.

MCO was supposed to pass MIA as busiest airport in Florida over a decade ago. The rest is history.

When the economy tanks and things get bad in avaition, MIA has a world city at its doorstep. MCO has a theme park.

Does expose the problems at MIA with high costs and FLL poaching would be MIA customers (EK)

BOM
2016: 44,680,555 (+9.95%)
2015: 40,637,377

Despite probably being the most constrained major airport in the world, BOM is doing really well with a 10% growth rate and over 4 million passengers added in the last year. Also, I think it has entered the top 30 busiest airports club!

YUL
2016: 16,6 million (+1,1 million, +6,9%)
domestic: +9,7%
transborder (read: USA): +4,3%
international: +5,9%

Particular pride in the rise of the number of connecting pax: from 2,8 million (2015) to 3,1 million (2016)

CEO predicts around 20 million overall around 2020.

Total paxs were down just over 4% and international paxs were down just over 8% from 2015

In 2016, PHL had the lowest pax count in 10 years.

Shocking. So, if current trends hold then BWI will overtake PHL in passengers a couple of years time.

Agree on the nature of the decrease but I do not anticipate this is a true trend to be expected for multiple years. Rather I anticipate the decrease is the product of the year after the AA-US merger was completed (notice how CLT, for example, also saw a small passenger decrease in 2016).

On the other hand, the increases in service from non-hub carriers like F9 and to a lesser extent NK will be interesting to follow to see if they have an impact.

While this is the lowest passenger total in 10 years for PHL, the range over the last 10 years has been relatively flat, between 30.1 and 32.2 million passengers. So the 30.1 million number is not so much doom and gloom but rather another year in which PHL has not grown.

Now what will it take to get PHL to noticeably grow for the first time in 10 years already?

Just heard back from ROC today. From my post above, passengers enplaned / deplaned in 2015: 2,378,499. Aircraft operations: 83,820.

2016: Passengers enplaned / deplaned: 2,392,138. Virtually flat from 2015. 2016 aircraft operations were down slightly at 79,821.

Still looking for how to get back to 2.8--2.9 million range from the last decade, better yet finally break 3 million. My guess is it will have to come from growth by Allegiant, because Southwest seems to be acting like another legacy instead of leading on price, and JetBlue seems comfortable where they are at.

CLE: 8,422,676 (3.95% increase over 2015).
UA is still the top carrier with 29% market share, followed by AA (16%), DL (15%), WN (15%), and F9 (12%).

Are you looking for IAD-style Independence Air rapid growth? Or, NK-style gradual growth? They can both help PHL get there, but one's a bit more...cataclysmic than the other.

(In mostly unrelated news, although I usually would just hop on SEPTA to Center City, last month I had to be in Upper Darby. Luckily, there was a bus that went right to 69th Street. Though I'm still not too fond of the airport as a whole, credit goes to its public transit connections.)

YYZ numbers:

2016: 44,311,177

8.0% growth vs 2015. 6.6% growth domestically, 8.1% growth to the US, 9.6% growth internationally.

Very strong numbers, 2017 should be reflective of this and continue to surge towards 50 million.

CVG:

2016- 6,773,905, up 7.24%
2015- 6,316,332

With WN starting flights in June and between F9 and DL's capacity/route expansions, CVG should easily blow past 7 million pax in 2017 for the first time since 2011.
