MCO was supposed to pass MIA as busiest airport in Florida over a decade ago. The rest is history.
When the economy tanks and things get bad in avaition, MIA has a world city at its doorstep. MCO has a theme park.
Does expose the problems at MIA with high costs and FLL poaching would be MIA customers (EK)

2016: 155,003 + 19.8%
KRP has for fifty years served one route only, KRP-CPH. Cimber Air (later Cimber-Sterling) did a magnificent job on that route for decades.
Then it became a Norwegian Air Shuttle strategy to kill this much smaller competitor. Among other such things Norwegian put in a B738 on the route and lowered the fare to DKK 1.00 (US$ 0.15).
In May 2012 Cimber-Sterling folded, and Norwegian reduced to 2 x daily with an old B733 wreak which constantly broke down with delays and cancelations as a consequence.
The airport would have been closed if it hadn't had nine owners - nine surrounding municipalities - who incidentally were unable to make that decision at the same time. The taxpayers had to swallow the economic losses.
Norwegian got so much (well deserved!) bad-mouth from customers and press that they chose to quit a couple of years back in time. Since then Danish Air Transport (DAT) has re-developed the route, now up to 8 x daily with ATR.

11,139,421 total - a 4.4% increase over 2015 and new airport record.
2015 had 10,673,301 passengers, itself a record at the time.
I expect 2017's growth to match if not beat 2016 with several new services already announced:
BA to LHR next month
DE to FRA in May
NK to CLE, BWI, and MCO in April
WN 1w service to PIT, IND, CMH, and 2w to RDU in March/April along with a second daily AUS flight
G4 just started RDU and CLE as well

Not really. Only down about 3%.
Just that several similar gateways had growth that allowed them to surpass it, and not by much.
Looks bad on paper, but isn't nearly as bad IRL. Especially compared to previous years.
