787 2nd & 4th Longest Flights: AeroMexico PVG-MEX & ICN-MEX

Thu Feb 02, 2017 12:57 am

AM will be flying these Dreamliner routes in the coming months, nonstop to MEX.

  • PVG-MEX 5x 8025 mi / 12916 km
  • ICN- MEX 4x 7528 mi / 12115 km

I guess both of them will be the longest routes operated with the type after SFO-SIN and LAX-MEL, respectively.

Was PVG-MEX previously operated by a 762 Or did this flight stop at TIJ?

On ICN-MEX, the westbound route is actually MEX-MTY-ICN...MTY to ICN is 6200 nmi (11483 km). PVG-MEX operates via TIJ both ways (5740 nmi or 10631 km). Could a 787-9 do MEX-PVG (12911 kilometers, 6971 nautical miles) nonstop from a hot and high airport without penalty?

Heloo fyano773, so in other words the routes will be MEX-TIJ-PVG-MEX and MEX-MTY-ICN-MEX?

Is PVG going to be a 789 destination? ICN is 788.

blacksoviet, it used to be MEX-TIJ-PVG-TIJ-MEX with 777-200ERs. Then the 787-8 took over. I imagine this will be a 787-9 route.

Is there still a nonstop MEX-NRT? I think that was a stretch for the 788 and i doubt nonstop PVG would be even remotely possible.

Nope, actually all planes departing out of MEX are penalized; I mean they can't lift at MTOW due to the altitude.

I believe AM will route the flight to either TIJ or MTY if ever decided to fly the 787-9 to PVG.

Correct. About PVG, the airline has updated schedules:

AeroMexico enhances Shanghai service from March 2017

AeroMexico in summer 2017 season is enhancing Shanghai service, where the airline converts Eastbound service from one-stop to Nonstop, effective 26MAR17. With this service changes, the airline will operate Mexico City – Tijuana – Shanghai Pu Dong – Mexico City routing, on board Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Source: Routes Online.

The change shows up in the current 3 weekly frequencies, featuring the eastbound flight nonstop all the way down to MEX:

  • AM098 MEX0135 – 0300TIJ0449 – 0930+1PVG 788 136
  • AM099 PVG1335 – 1600MEX 788 247

Additional 2 weekly frequencies appear to be:

  • AM096 MEX1635 – 1825TIJ2005 – 0105+2PVG 788 34
  • AM097 PVG0530 – 0741MEX 788 56

Seems Asia will be operated only with 787-8. The 787-9 is mainly rotated among MAD, CDG and SCL, so far.

Thanks a lot fyano773. Interesting developments. I have several comments/questions.
1. I was unaware that AM had been able to secure two additional frequencies to PVG. That is very good news, even though their schedule is not very attractive (I suppose it is not so bad if you originate in Shanghai and need to be in Mexico City for meetings starting at 10 am or so). Is the new 5 weekly going to be year long or will it be only seasonal?
2. I find it strange that SCL is seeing -9s. I thought it was one of the weakest performers in the AM long-haul network. I was looking for flights to Europe in April and saw that AM was sending the -9 to MAD, which is not surprising, and also to AMS. Looks like AM is really benefiting from the connection opportunities that KL/AMS offer.
3. So all the -8s (nine altogether) have joined the fleet. How many -9s are operational right now?
4. Will AM sell MTY-ICN and TIJ-PVG tickets?

Hi Eddie

To answer question number 3 and 4:
3. AM currently have 5 787-9 operational (XA-ADL, ADC, ADD, N183AM and N483AM)
4. Looking at AM webpage you can buy tickets for both flights. The only thing is that for a roundtrip, the return to MTY or TIJ involves connecting through MEX.

Greetings

So are the ICN and PVG routes performing good for AM?

So Hainan's PVG-TIJ launching this Dec will compete with them on one of the leg?

No, PVG-TIJ by Hainan will indirectly compete with JL on SAN-NRT. Hainan would probably serve SAN from PEK but they can't due to frequencies from PEK to the US being maxed out (per what I saw in another thread). The Hainan flight will not continue to MEX from TIJ; the AM flight to PVG only uses TIJ as a fuel stop.

Thanks xaapb.

With respect to HU, I thought they would fly from PEK, not from PVG. Interesting. I suppose this gives AM room to launch PEK soon as Conesa has hinted and the media has speculated.

Not that I am doubting you, but can you expand on this point a bit further. From my perspective, both flights serve almost completely different markets. I would like to understand, a bit better - what the connection is between the two. You're completely right on, with the proximity and easy access of TIJ to SAN, that said - for some, avoiding the U.S. (and associated need for said Visa) might deter a few travelers from SAN.

ICN starts on May 27th with four weekly flights.

I heard that the inaugural was postponed until July 3rd due to traffic rights issues, but perhaps it's been resolved?

I don't remember hearing anything about that, here is AM press release regarding the flight to ICN: https://aeromexico.com/en-us/am-news/ae ... on-in-asia

Here's an updated press release, in Spanish: https://www.aeromexico.com/es-mx/notici ... ea-del-sur

So I guess it's July 1st, then. Also reflected in the GDS.
